It was interesting reading the review of this hotel below. I was coming to this site to write my own review and had a completely different experience. So for a completely different review read ahead. Was there the exact same weekend April 29 - May 1. Was able to get the hotel through Priceline for $100/night.
Upon arriving on Friday April 29 we pulled up to the front of the hotel and the valet staff told us to just leave our car there in the front until we found out where our room was going to be located. The front desk staff was helpful in checking us in and providing us with information about the surrounding area of Scottsdale. We were informed about the pool closures mentioned below. I would of been upset as well if we were going to be there all weekend to lounge by the pool. However we were out most of Saturday, the day the pools were closed. There is also a $12/night resort fee which includes a few items, such as parking, local calls, newspaper, etc. I did not mind the fee because I have been to plenty of other hotels in cities that charge double this price to park your own car. Here you could get it valet and just tip the staff. We checked out the bar area (Sangreia's) which we decided to eat lunch and enjoy those complementry drinks because the pool being closed. Staff was a little more quiet and did mention the 18% gratuity being added on, and that is on everything. Even when you order a drink at the bar, gratuity was added on. Decent lunch sitting outside looking out to one of the golf holes.
Our room was located in the Main Building on the 3rd floor. Have read reviews on remodled rooms, and perhaps this was one of them because we were impressed with them. There were two beds in a good size room. A seperate sink on the outside of the bathroom and another sink in the toilet room and shower. Always nice to have that second sink. Our room looked into the courtyard area right before the main pool. There is moss growing right outside the windows, which allows birds to live right outside your windows. Once again, it did not bother us because it only reminded us of Hawaii.
Saturday we were gone most of the day seeing Sedona (don't miss it). We did start off with the coffee bar, which was a simple coffee danish options, but I was not expecting much. We came back to the hotel around 5pm to rest before heading out again and it was a busy place with many groups gathering. I know there was a wedding reception, and a wildlife shin-dig going on, and probably other stuff. Never felt overwhelmed however by it. That evening after arriving back from dinner around 11pm, most of the activities must of been done with because it was obviously less crowded. From our room we never heard one other hotel guest around. Which is rare for us staying in hotels.
Sunday morning before heading out we decided to hang out at the pool and it was empty. We did go to the pool Friday as well. On Friday at around 3pm the pool area looked like a Las Vegas pool, which was crowded. But when we went to the pool around 6pm on Friday, we were wondering if it was still open because we were the only ones out there. There is a bar located next to the pool which is a nice addition as well. Never did make it down to the Casita Pool area.
Overall our experience was great. It was a nice restful trip. I know you never know what you are going to get, but we did come home rested.
Our king room in the main hotel that I booked was switched without our knowledge to a smaller room in one of the Casita buildings on the back side of the hotel. I had asked in advance if either of the pools would be closed during our stay (April 29 thru May 2) and was advised that neither pool was scheduled for maint. However, when we checked in we received a letter from the General Manager advising us that both pools would be closed for periods of time over the course of our stay due to 'prior contractual agreements', meaning that the hotel had booked private parties into both pool areas. Two free drink vouchers were given to us to accomodate for our inconvenience. Friday night we listened to 5 hours of loud and obnoxious partiers right outside our room due to one of the private parties the hotel booked. Saturday we were crowded out of the small 4 foot deep Casita pool area due to the influx of over 100 other guests pouring in from the main pool area which was closed all day for another private party the hotel had booked in. Saturday afternoon the small pool also closed for over three hours for yet a third private party the hotel had booked in. This group of people were allowed to park in our parking area in front of the Casita buildings housing ours and other hotel guest's rooms. We were forced to park out at the main hotel's parking lot and ramp and carry luggage and bags quite some distance just to get to our buildings. In addition to that the young adults associated with this particular private party stayed overnight in one of the rooms below us. We called the front desk at 3:30 a.m and again at 4:30 a.m. asking to have the noise level contained. They were drunk, using foul language and extremely loud sitting aroung the pool the whole night. My husband confirmed with the front desk on Sunday morning that we were not the only room that called to complain about the noise from this particular room.
In addition to the pool issues:
Bathroom ridiculously small with only two inches clearance between the door and the toilet. The ceiling light in the bathroom had a burned out bulb and it took two calls on two consecutive days to get it replaced. The water in the room took 10 minutes to heat up enough to shower in, despite the fact that the water heater was located behind a door on our balconly. Housekeeping barely spoke enough English to understand what we were asking for. I finally had to show an emply shampoo bottle in order for our assigned housekeeper to understand what we were asking for. The phone in our room was not programmed correctly so we were always bounced around the switchboard to get to room service or the front desk. Our room number was one digit off from the room service number so our phone rang all weekend with other guests asking if we were room service. At one point we came back from a sightseeing trip to find 6 voicemail messages-all from guests in other rooms asking for room service. The front desk people thought it was funny, we didn't. The coffee bar included in our package consisted of travel sized granola bars, bite-sized store bought pastries with coffee & juice from dispensers. The front desk people were not interested in hearing our issues when we checked out, but kept insisting that if we filled out a comment card a manager would read it. They never once offered to get the manager, even after we stated we would never book there again. Not even an apology was offered by the front desk crew. They simply printed our receipt and wouldn't make eye contact.
The bright spot in all of this:
The Spa employees-our massages were the best thing out of the whole stay. The staff at the Spa made us feel like we were in a four star hotel. Sadly, that feeling only lasted for the hour we were there getting our massages.
Overall review:
Terrible and we will never return to this hotel. This was our anniversary trip and it was not worth what we spent on this hotel. We were extremely disappointed.
This was the second time we have stayed here. The bell and valet staff were friendly. However, the front desk person was rude and condescending. I did not have a previous room assignment and requested a king room. It was our anniversary. He stated that it was a business hotel if I hadn't noticed so the majority of their rooms had 2 beds so companies could double up. I asked if I could pay more to upgrade to a suite or different room. He gave me an annoyed look and said no.
The room was nicely furnished but had no patio or balcony. Unusual for Scottsdale. The bar staff was also not very friendly. We ordered drinks and the server came first with the check for us to sign with our room number and abrubtly informed us they will automatically be including 18% gratuity. We didn't mind the inclusion of the gratuity but did not feel they should lecture customers on this prior to serving them. Overall it is a pretty resort with friendly room service and bell/valet staff. Front desk and bar staff could treat customers with a little more respect!!
We had a wonderful time at the Scottsdale Resort and Conference Center. We stayed six nights during peak spring break and spring training season. Booked through Hotwire for $113 a night. We were two families traveling together and needed three rooms. The only availability I found was the Hyatt for $499 a night per room. That was not going to happen. The reviewer who said the resort had "Old World charm" and an "old Hollywood" feel hit the nail on the head. Rooms were large and immaculate.
Large armoire (I mean HUGE) and four phones (including one in the bathroom). Loved the colors and decor. Very high end. Granite in the bathroom sink areas (there are two). Great closet that opens from both sides. Bathrobes were supplied. Lovely bath products (wish I had more of that oatmeal soap). Nightly turndown service and twice-a-day housekeeping. We received USA Today during the week; the local paper on Saturday. Sunday you can purchase one at the gift shop by the lobby but I was able to find several outside by the firepit. Continental breakfast was available daily but we usually went out for something a bit more substantial.
Made use of the tennis courts several times a day. You get one free hour a day with your resort fee. Bike rental is $10 an hour. One time my kids didn't get charged, another time they did. There are billiard tables where the kids were welcome to use if parents are with them. Most of the time the kids went by themselves and they were never asked to leave. We would go back in a second and stay here again. The location was perfect for everything we wanted to do. I looked at some other properties while we were there (the Phoenician, JW Marriott, Westin) and I think we made the right choice with our hotel plus we saved so much money by doing so.
Negatives: Kind of confusing layout but once we figured it out we were fine.
No ice machines or vending machines. You have to call room service to bring you ice. We did this a lot. Asked for four wine glasses daily and everything was always brought within five minutes.
Basketball/sport court is being revamped right now so it wasn't available for anything other than just shooting.
Bring your own racquets and balls (we did). They charge $6 for a bag of three balls and I think racquet rental was $10 an hour (may have been less but I cannot remember since we didn't rent).
Heated pool was fine and nice to get in but there are no fountains or "thrills" for those who want more than a basic pool. Always clean towels and plenty of chaises and chairs. Really liked the "beds" on the upper terrace of the pool.
