“Nice but more corporate than resort”

We stayed at this resort from 12/26 through 1/1/05. I know from our travels that these type of resorts often cater to corporate groups, but booked it anyway because I thought maybe there wouldn't be as many corporate functions/meetings during the holiday week from Christmas to New Years. For the majority of our stay, a large (600 person) conference was at the hotel, taking over the hotel and all of the amentities. The people were all very nice attending the conference, but if you were not part of the group, you were definitely an outsider. I felt very uncomfortable while walking through the lobby areas and in the pool area. In some ways the hotel can't be blamed for my feeling of being an outsider, but then again they can only because they are trying to please everyone by "catering" to corporations and families simultaneously. The hotel was very nice in appearance and amentities. I am a Westin member and booked this trip in July. I sent them an email about a week before check-in to inquire about an upgrade. I did receive a response that I should ask when checking in. The best they could do for me was a better view, not a bigger unit. That was OK with me too, until this huge group checked in and I found out that the hotel was holding the upgrades to larger units for the corporate group. That's just not fair. I would recommend this hotel if you are attending a conference. If you are family, especially with small children, I would look elsewhere. You will feel lost in the corporate structure of this hotel while trying to vacation from your own profession.

“Truly Pampered”

Westin Kierland Resort and Spa

Spent 4 nights in a very calm, luxurious environment. Very friendly staff who always acknowledged me with "Sir" in the lobby or hallways. Great comfortable convention areas and spacious grounds to walk around with lots of local historic memorabilia and art adorning the walls and halls. Terrific group meals in Ballroom and outdoors - breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Very comfortable room with Heavenly Bed and Heavenly Bath - although shower wastes a lot of water! I had a chance to dine in the hotel restaurant "deseo". Wow! Would highly recommend it. A Latin flair with beautiful atmosphere, great service and superb food - I could smell my steak coming from across the room! Would love to go back.

“Very nice vacation resort”

Our family of four, including two children 2 and 5 year old, spent eight nights in September in the Westin Kierland. We found it an excellent place to have a relaxing family vacation. We had a one-bedroom suite overlooking the golf course. The suite consists of a room with a kingsoze bed and a room with a pullout sofa. So that our children won't have to share the sofa, we asked for a rollaway, which was brought to our room in no time and was free of charge. The rooms are in very good shape and as the rest of the hotel very clean. The suite has two bathrooms, one with bathtub and separate shower, the other one with only a shower, but both are adequate in size. The pool area is also clean and very well maintained, with plenty of loungers. Even during labour day weekend, when the place seemed packed, there was no shortage of loungers, even though more umbrellas would have been nice. Pool service was friendly and efficient. The lazy river was the hit with our children, the slide is too fast for little children and I absolutely can't understand why the little ones are not allowed to ride in their parents lap. We had lots of crying due to this. We regularly had breakfast at Nelly's. The buffet is very good, they even have breakfast items such as cured ham, salami and various cheeses (not just cheddar and mozzarella), which please the continental European taste. The waiters where very kind and didn't mind to fulfill special requests, such as dry toast and warm milk for the children's cereals, which was a big problem in various other hotels. The buffet is 17$ plus tax, children eat free. Parking is no problem. There is either valet parking at 18$ (overnight) and 3$ during the day or a huge free parking lot at about 150 yards from the lobby. Upon arrival, we were allowed to park the car at the main entrance, to unload the the luggage. Also, walking distances within the building are by far not as bad as mentioned by other reviewers. Some rooms are just by pool, some are further away, maybe a maximum of 250 yards, but if someone wants parking and pool right infront of the door, people should book Motel 6. Overall, the staff was extremely friendly, always smiling, always asking whether everything is all right. We checked in on labour day weekend, there was no queue at checking-in.
We were never bothered by time-sharing people, though there were leaflets about time-sharing sessions all over the place, they paid 100$ to attend a session. We also took a look at the Kids club, which is well equipped, but got a feeling that they don't do that much with the children and that our children would eventually end up infront of the TV set. At about 5 minutes walking distance (the hotel also provides a free shuttle service) are the Kierland Commons, an upmarket shopping area. They have some nice restaurant (P.F. Chang was our favourite) and a variety of nice shops, among them a Borders bookstore. Unfortunately shops close early at night (8.00 p.m). To cut a long way short, we had a very relaxing vacation in a nice hotel and we hope that we can go there again.

“Great pool, need to quit pushing Kierland timeshare”

Westin Kierland Resort and Spa

Oct 19, 2004

We loved the pool and the grounds at the Kierland. Great for parents and children, with shallow areas for young kids and an incredible "flowing river" for the whole family. We were fortunate that our rate included free breakfast, and the breakfast buffet was excellent although service was poor (had to keep looking for waiter who was busy talking, dirty plates left on table for long periods). The room was OK, somewhat obstructed view, smallish room, tiny bathroom, no double sinks or a sink outside of bathroom. Beds were comfortable. Carpet was badly stained, a surprise since the hotel is rather new.
My problem with the hotel is the way they try to waste your time on getting you to purchase a timeshare. We were paying for our hotel and weren't given any kind of discount. I was called in advance and told there was a "welcome gift" at the concierge desk. Upon check-in the concierge kept trying to talk us into listening to a 90 minute discussion on the timeshare. She kept wasting our time, while we were tired and still had luggage in hand. For all of this, we were given nothing. Finally, I inquired about our "gift." The "gift" was a voucher for discounted future stay which was a joke since it's for rates based on the rack rate - no one pays rack rates and usually the internet price is less than 50% the rack rate. Also, this "gift" is a standard reward under the Starwood Preferred Guest program for a mere 1000 points. Big deal! They wasted so much time of our time, for which we were not compensated, and we were pressured again and again, and even bumped into some more agressive Kierland timeshare sales locations elsewhere that were trying to hawk the timeshare. The concierge desk at the Kierland is a joke since it's staffed only with salespeople. Once it became clear that I wouldn't attend the 90 minute sales pitch for the timeshare, I was refused any concierge assistance. Guess it was OK to waste my time, but I was not provided any assistance.

This 2002 opened property caters to corporate groups with large meeting facilities. Check in was efficient and service throughout my stay was very good to excellent (the hotel was full). Rooms are in excellent condition, well lighted and beds extremely comfortable. Baths are large, well lighted and nicely appointed with separate bath/shower with tile floors and walls. Spa and pool are good (but not as over the top as you might expect). Food was generally above average though price. 27-hole of golf are on property. There is a new top-shelf shopping mall across the street with a number of restaurants. Caution: Some rooms are located along busy corridors or excits. Otherwise, property was remarkably quiet considering the crowd.
