On a recent weekend, we stayed overnight in the Phoenix area. Our schedule in the area required us to be in Northeast Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, and Central Phoenix over two days. We needed a hotel that would give us fairly easy access to the places we needed to go, as well as a quiet, relaxing haven overnight, away from the hustle and bustle of the busier parts of the Valley.
The location of the Courtyard Scottsdale Salt River appeared to fit the bill, being located right off the 101 freeway, east of downtown Scottsdale. The name of the hotel is a bit misleading, since the Salt River is actually about four miles south of the hotel, but this location is far enough away from Tempe that it is not overrun by the ASU event traffic. Being located adjacent to the 101 made the hotel easy to find, and we were able to reach all of our Valley destinations within about half an hour on the freeways.
Parking is convenient and free. Oddly, most of the spaces near the front of the building were devoted to carpool and "alternate energy" vehicles, which meant during my visit that they were empty. Not being sure what "carpool" means in the context of a hotel, we were forced to park around the side of the building and leave all of the empty spaces open. They were still empty the next morning.
The hotel itself is new, modern, and outfitted in the standard Courtyard decor. We were given a room on the fourth floor, with a view to the north, overlooking the pool and toward the McDowell mountains. The bed was comfortable, and the room was clean. Free WiFi worked in the room and in the lobby, accommodating all of my devices. The Internet speed was a bit slow, but usable. Our room was quiet overnight, and the air conditioner worked well, if a bit noisy.
What really shined at this hotel was the service we received from the staff. The front desk greeter was friendly on arrival and offered me a choice of floors. When we were departing the following morning, we arrived at the "Bistro" at 10:05 on Sunday morning, looking to have breakfast. The chef indicated that breakfast ended at 10:00am (on a SUNDAY? Really?) but indicated that he had not yet shut everything down and he was still willing to cook us breakfast. In short, he went out of his way to accommodate us, in spite of the odd closing time for breakfast on a Sunday, which was not his fault. The food was hot and good, and had ample portions.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay at this hotel, and would return on a future visit.
