As noted in my other reviews I've stayed in a variety of hotels in the Phoenix area for business and personal trips. I chose the Doubletree Resort Paradise Valley for a recent trip because it suited my needs for location and cost. I read the TripAdvisor reviews before going and saw complaints in some reviews so I wasn't sure what I would get. I found this to be a good hotel choice overall although I did have some issues that I think management can address (and according to some of their comments they are doing so).
The hotel has an older appearance - some updates here and there would help. I noted concerns in other reviews about the lighting of the exterior walkways and they did seem a little darker than most. Overall the appearance of my room was excellent; it looked freshly painted. The furnishings were basic but clean and new.
My only complaint about the room would be the bathroom, which is pretty small. The toilet also took forever to refill after flushing.
I understand that the hotel is upgrading its internet service to the rooms but at present there isn't any in-room wi-fi. I can't stress enough to management how important this is to business travelers. I work exclusively from my iPad so ethernet doesn't help. This is something they are working on so I'll drop it, but not before reiterating the obvious: wireless internet isn't a luxury in a hotel any more- it is an absolute necessity.
I made sure to request a courtyard facing room and was given exactly that. I never had any noise issues. The pool area was clean and very pleasant. There was a kiosk set up in the pool area which I assume is used to serve drinks and food, but it wasn't open; I understand it is Winter so no huge surprise there. They won't sell many margaritas by the pool when it's 45 degrees out. There was a nearby stand which sells sodas, coffee, pastries and the like.
Service was excellent from start to finish. The valet guys were great, the waitstaff efficient, the shuttle van driver responsive... so all good there, which is very important to my enjoyment of a hotel stay.
This location was central for my needs. Old town Scottsdale is close and the hotel offers a free shuttle - I think it runs until 10 pm but a cab ride wouldn't set you back much. Other food options abound on Scottsdale Road. You're centrally located in the Valley and the freeway isn't far. There are several golf courses very close by.
For the price I thought this hotel was solid. The level of value kept this a four star for me rather than a three. Getting the in-room wi-fi situation resolved will help considerably, and they will definitely want to keep tabs on maintenance and facilities issues as this property does appear to be a little older. I would definitely stay here again though based on my positive experience with the room, service, and overall value.
