“Good value for family”

Hyatt Summerfield Suites Scottsdale/Old Town

May 26, 2008

The hotel upgraded us to a 2-bedroom unit which was suitable for our family with 2 young children. It helped that there was a DVD player in the unit to keep our children entertained at times. We requested a crib for our baby and it was waiting in the unit when we arrived, along with crib linen and baby blanket. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a ground floor and it was a challenge to take luggage up and down the stairs, as well as carry the baby up and down when we went out.

There's laundry machines for $2.00 per wash and another $2.00 per dryer. The pool/jacuzzi area looked okay but it was too cold to go in. (We expected blazing heat during our stay but the weather changed by 40 degrees and it was cold and drizzly instead!).

The breakfast was okay. The coffee was sometimes lukewarm or burnt. The dining staff doesn't seem to keep up with the coffee which ran out and the trash basket for the coffee creamer was left overflowing during breakfast peak time.

The location was convenient and Old Town was within walking distance.

Overall, it was an okay stay.

Stayed here for just one night in April 08. Typically nice rooms for Hyatt. I went into the breakfast area for a cup of coffee but couldn't find any real cream, or half and half for the coffee - just unhealthy plastic fake creamers were available. No help from the cereal area as they only had skim milk or 2%. Why a hotel of this caliber would lack such a little necessity is beyond me. For people staying longer than a few days, this would not be an issue as there are kitchenettes in the rooms and one could stock their own cream. But, for someone who only needs a good cup of java in the morning after a one night stay, this becomes a problem - at least it did for me.

Next time, somewhere else.

Stayed at the Hyatt Summerfield Suites Scottsdale for a work trip. I found the room to be spacious and pleasantly appointed, though nothing lavish. The front desk staff was understaffed at times, but very helpful. There were some confusions with the reservation (one member of my group couldn't make it due to flight cancellations and, with the rooms in his name, we had to sort a few things; in addition he had booked me into a smoking room), but the hotel staff was friendly and we fixed things without any hiccups. I only had one complaint: some of the rooms facing the main street are directly across from a bar that features loud music (I think it was from speakers on the patio). The music seemed to start at 9pm, which was bad because I had to sleep early to wake up for a 6:30am flight. The hotel couldn't do anything to stop it, but I was able to make do. So, if you can, avoid the side of the hotel that faces the main street (Drinkwater).

I would recommend this hotel for a reasonable rate, relative to the expenses of Scottsdale.

“6 wk business stay”

I stayed at Summerfield Suites for 6 weeks during August and September. The room was very clean and spacious, very comfortable for such an extended stay. The hotel is fairly quiet and felt safe. The property does have a very strict rule that the pool closes at 10 pm, including the attached gazebo area. It would have been nice to sit out a bit longer especially after working all day. The b-fast is typical free hotel food. However, the evening receptions were nice, free beer, wine and snacks. Great way to unwind. Hotel is close to restaurants and shopping. Scottsdale is exspenive is be prepared, LA prices. The gym is a joke. It is very SMALL, more like a mirrored closted with a couple machines-both of which were broken while I was there. The hotel does have an arrangment with a nearby gym-for $2 a workout bt you will need a car to get there. Overall, a nice stay.

I spent 2 nights at this hotel Jan 25-27, 2008, in a 1-br room.

As a quick aside, they charge a $150 NON-refundable pet deposit, but are certainly pet friendly. They (rightfully so) insist that your pet is caged/crated if you want maid service, and that room service is mandatory at least 3 times a week.

The complex appears to be quite similar to a 1980s apt complex. It is clean and tidy, but the actual building structures are obviously dated. Not a big issue, but if you're looking for a new retro-modern, stylish place to stay, this is not the one for you!

The room was quite dark and had a cave-like feel to it, even with blinds open and lights on. This was largely due to dark carpeting, dark cabinets, and dark furniture. The room comes with a standard small kitchenette, and to their credit, they do offer a free grocery pick up service (have your order to the front desk by 9am).

The bed was a bit firm but certainly acceptable, and all the furniture was newer and in good shape. The bathroom was clean but clearly dated, and there were 2 areas of black mildew (behind toilet and in crack between 2 adjoining sections of molded plastic shower/tub combo. Water pressure was fine. I was a bit off-put by the obviously re-used shampoo and conditioner bottles, though! There was dried, crusted shampoo and conditioner on them, plus some hair, and the tubes were obviously not clean/new.

There is free wireless internet in the room as well, which seemed fairly speedy.

I didn't check out the breakfast but it seemed fine - the dining area had a strange fluorescent glow to it but was spacious enough.

The staff are friendly and down-to-earth, and the location is very handy to Old Town Scottsdale, with even a free shuttle bus during several hours through the day and night.

Overall, a good value for the price, but I would recommend the new W Hotel or the Valley Ho if you're looking for the young and hip crowd (which I've aged gracefully out of, whether I like to admit it or not!).
