Jim from Green Zebra picked my daughter and me up from the Royal Palms and the adventure began. He was a wellspring of knowledge; there is something singular about a guide who loves where he is and what he is doing. ; ) He let us in on facts and lore, trivia and more re. Arizona, Phoenix, the Sonoran Desert, the canal system, theYavapai tribe and every kind of cacti from the noble saguaro to the threatening teddybear. I left driving the tomcar to my daughter and enjoyed the spectacular views. I loved the tomcar as did she--trekking through the potholes and around the vegetation at a clip gets the adrenaline going. We stopped along the Verde River and received a close-up view of three mustang who decided to stop for a drink of water as well. I guess I really appreciated Jim's take on everything--he framed the tour as though we were conquistadores looking at the desert for the first time--gave a fresh perspective of survival and how amazing the desert habitat is! I would go again as would my daughter Claire. P.S. At one point, Jim asked us to break off a clump of greasewood and rub it between our fingers--said "that is the smell of the desert." That scent . . . well, it should be in a soy candle! A great tour!
