“The Sonoran Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2014

Jim from Green Zebra picked my daughter and me up from the Royal Palms and the adventure began. He was a wellspring of knowledge; there is something singular about a guide who loves where he is and what he is doing. ; ) He let us in on facts and lore, trivia and more re. Arizona, Phoenix, the Sonoran Desert, the canal system, theYavapai tribe and every kind of cacti from the noble saguaro to the threatening teddybear. I left driving the tomcar to my daughter and enjoyed the spectacular views. I loved the tomcar as did she--trekking through the potholes and around the vegetation at a clip gets the adrenaline going. We stopped along the Verde River and received a close-up view of three mustang who decided to stop for a drink of water as well. I guess I really appreciated Jim's take on everything--he framed the tour as though we were conquistadores looking at the desert for the first time--gave a fresh perspective of survival and how amazing the desert habitat is! I would go again as would my daughter Claire. P.S. At one point, Jim asked us to break off a clump of greasewood and rub it between our fingers--said "that is the smell of the desert." That scent . . . well, it should be in a soy candle! A great tour!

Dear Susan J,

Hahaha, we love your review! We will pass along your feedback to Jim so he knows what a wonderful job he did / does! I cannot believe that Jim had you and your daughter break off a clump of greasewood. Hilarious!

Sincerely,

“Fun trip but the cars kept breaking down”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2014

Holy dust! Seriously, at times you can only see the cars brake lights in front of you. Guides were awesome and very knowledgeable about the desert. Gave a first hand painful demostration of what happens when a cactus barb gets on your skin. The trip would have been great but we several of the groups cars kept breaking down. The guides would have to stop and work on them through the trip.

Dear Blankenboat,

Thank you for your helpful comments that explained what you liked and what you did not. Our guides are awesome and I will pass along your praise of their professionalism.

To address the dust levels as well as vehicle breakdowns, unfortunately those are aspects out of our control. In the desert, dust is always a factor; even more so this spring because we have not had any rain. Additionally, when dust levels are as high as you describe, vehicles have an increased chance of breaking down. That is the reason our head mechanic specially trains all tour guides on how to fix vehicles during the tour. Our guides try to keep the tour moving as much as possible, but if a vehicle breakdown occurs, they cannot leave guests behind. I truly believe that it is a testament to our awesome guides being so well-rounded.

Sincerely,
Michelle Spokojny

Dear Ariel M,

Families are a tremendous joy to have on the tour! Our guides love taking families out to see parts of the Indian reservation that can only be seen by driving further out into the desert, such as the wildlife. Thank you for joining us and for your nice comment!

Sincerely,

Great adventure. Easy to drive and not that bumpy as u would think. The vehicles have an independent suspension and make the ride enjoyable.

“A pleasure, a treat and a privilege”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2014 via mobile

Our concierge was adamant that this was the tour to do. My wife and I were picked up at our resort by John, our guide, and driven to a pristine desert reserve, not open to the public. Our Tomcar was waiting for us when we got there and after a brief but thorough instruction on how the car is controlled we set off. There had been heavy rains two days before so we had no dust at all and the mud and puddles were great fun. We had sections of flat sandy terrain where we could speed along and some rocky ascents and descents where it made sense to drive more carefully. The pace was determined by us. Both my wife and I had a chance to drive which was both fun and special but our main aim was to immerse ourselves in the desert landscape. We had 2 stops which were beautiful and informative about the area, fauna and flora and all questions were answered expertly. It was a real privilege to be so close to this rich desert, the flowing Verde river and to see wild horses and cattle. Every step was a pleasure, exciting and a treat to our senses. I would recommend this trip to anyone who has a morning or afternoon to spare, it is definitely worth every cent of the money and a whole lot more - everlasting memories from an adventure like this are priceless.
