“FireSky has a great location but is just an OK hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2007

Overall, it was an OK place. I wouldn't tell somone not to stay there, but it is hard to get too excited about it either. It depends on your tastes and budget.

The hotel is a pretty old property which is reflected in the 1960's motel style guest room buildings, but it has been renovated and brought reasonably up-to-date for the most part. The lobby is beautiful, the lobby bar subpar, the grounds and pool areas beautiful and probably the best part of the property, but it was totally understaffed and the service substandard. The location is right in downtown Scottsdale and the hotel staff will shuttle you to local shopping and dining if they aren't too busy. All it takes is a couple of people checking in at the same time and the bell staff is overwhelmed hauling luggage around the property and can't shuttle you during those times.

The hotel food is, well, "organic" which isn't something that is a big selling point to our family. We prefer good tasting over organic and much of the food was not all that great. No worries, there's TONS of eating withing 1/2 mile of the resort.

There is a pretty neat kids pools with sandy beach entrance and small slide that is appropriate for probably 3 year olds and up. Our kids loved it. Not much in the way of pool food/beverage service so you have to walk up to the lobby bar most of the time.

The rooms where a bit small, clearly remodeled to be updated but still had a musty old smell to them. You know you're staying in a 40 year old hotel that's been ridden pretty hard over the years.

  • Liked — the kids pool and the convenient location to shopping and dining
  • Disliked — understaffed during our stay

I booked a room at FireSky Resort and Spa after researching the available candidates. I chose Firesky as it was a newly renovated property located in the heart of Scottsdale's Old Town, within a few blocks of museums and shopping, and was close to the Phoenix International Airport (about 10 miles)
The resort amenities include landscaped gardens, tropical courtyard, sand-beach pool (incredible), lagoon and the full-service Jurlique Spa. After arriving I found that there were additional features such as a evening wine reception. Other guests who were staying there were friendly and the employees were both professional and extremely nice.
The restaurant, Taggia has some of the best Italian cuisine I have ever experienced .The chef even stopped by our table to check on our meal.
It is so hard to find resorts these days with any free features but was pleased to find that complimentary wireless high-speed internet access, complimentary valet parking, and 24-hour fitness center was included in the base room price.
My wife always travels with her dog and was happy to find that not only is the resort pet friendly but also that they welcomed her dog with a treat and his own water bowl
Additionally our room featured plush robes, L'Occitane bath products, complimentary coffee and tea, morning papers, and views of the gardens.

I recommend this resort and spa unconditionally and will definitely stay there upon my next visit.

  • Liked — the landscaping and integration of pools, the restaurant, the tastefully designed internal areas

We booked via Arizona Hotels .com, and also checked UK 2007 brochures, on all these the hotel is still named Caleo Resort and Spa. We travelled up and down Scottsdale road looking for the place, after stopping to ask where it was only then were we told of its name change. We booked a patio/garden room and expected a patio or balcony overlooking a garden, what we had was a tiny strip of land with a few plants and a wall ,behind which was the car park. There was also a footpath going right past the patio doors, you would need the lights on during the day. I went back to reception and asked for another room, we were offered one for an extra$25 per day. When we went to see this room it backed on to the pool maintenance building, with all the noise, and still facing a wall. I went back to reception and spoke to a more pleasant person, and we were given a nicer room. We decided to have a lazy day after travelling, the breakfasts were expensive, $6 for half a bowl of cornflakes, and everything was extra, we stayed at the Doubletree further up the road previously which was exceptional value for money the breakfast buffet was wonderful, and much more friendly.
The lunch menu at the pool took 30 minutes to arrive, and there was no excuse as the place seemed to have very low occupancy, there were a few of us at the bar in the early evening but no barman, the dinner menu was not extensive enough so we ate out. The hotel makes a big fuss of being dog friendly, but you know designer dogs are yappy so be warned! The hotel is fairly impressive inside and the room we eventually got was nice, but if you want value for money go up the road to the Doubletree. We didn't realise that the Doubletree was going to be as good as it was and I am sorry that we did not go back there at the end of our travels, but really we thought we would treat ourselves to a better hotel before flying home and we were wrong.

Stunning hotel and food is excellent. We stayed in the motel type side which probably is cheaper (booked by our travel agency). Although it overlooked a road and carpark, as we are staying on the second floor and if you sit on the balcony, you can´t see the carpark. Very near downtown. Very romantic especially in the evening when the fire is lit on the pillars near the swimming pool. Definitely will go back again and will book a better room.

Loved it. Spent the weekend taking advantage of the spa, the pool, the location, the food. The staff was great and the rooms were comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.

I think I can give some historical perspective on this property. My wife and I stayed a number of times at this property when it was called the Sunburst. We thought it was a very special place and still do. What made it so appealing to us is that it was smaller than so many of the mega-resorts in Scottsdale and possessed the best location of any resort in Scottsdale. Furthermore, as the previous reviewer noted, the lobby is stunning, not in a glitzy way, but in its tastefulness. I think the material is sandstone. Whatever it is, it is beautiful. The property layout is basically a square with the front side on N. Scottsdale Road. The layout provides an inner courtyard that contains two pools, one with a small beach area. We think the courtyard is lovely. The hotel offers a shuttle service to the restaurants, malls, etc. in the surrounding area and we have always enjoyed this since we can just park our car and never have to use it unless we go outside the shuttle van's perimeter.
We never stayed at the hotel after it was changed to the Caleo resort, but I noticed that the reviews of the hotel took a huge nosedive. Kimpton has now taken over. We didn't know what to expect. I'm happy to report that the renovations done have made the hotel even nicer. When the property was the Sunburst, the one area that needed improvement was the bathroom. That has now been changed. Instead of a tub, there is now a walk-in shower. The vanity is now in the form of a bowl type sink. Nicely done. The rooms have also been upgraded. There are now flat screen t.v.'s. The hallway, which used to seem somewhat dark, has new carpeting and is bright and cheery. Thankfully, they did not make major changes to the lobby.
In choosing a room here, the one recommendation I would make is that you spend the extra money to get an inside (courtyard) room. While the first floor rooms have a patio and the second floor rooms have a balcony, the view and ambience from an inside room would be far nicer than an outside room.

I recommended FireSky to a friend who later said she wasn't staying there because of numerous negative reviews on tripadvisor.com. I read
some of the reviews and decided to write my own in an effort to give a fair and balanced assessment.

Firesky is very eclectic, artful, and almost eccentricly decorated. IT IS NOT, your typical, conservative, neutrally decorated, mundane hotel that most people are used to. It's so unique that I felt as if I had a room at someone's house for a few nights.

Pros:
1. Breathtaking lobby.
2. Unbeatable location in Scottsdale.
3. Tastefully decorated room and bathroom.
4. Luxurious bedding.
5. Friendly staff.
6. Georgeous pool area and courtyard.
7. Several outdoor fireplaces with comfortable seating.
8. Trusted Kimpton name.
9. Had 2 celebrity sightings.

Cons:
1. Rooms are nice but small with low ceilings.
2. Motel layout.
3. Maybe slightly overpriced but the location arguably justifies it.
4. No views.
5. Noisy at times.

Note:
1. I did not use the spa service and cannot comment on it.
2. Pet friendly. Pro or con depending on the person.

Overall, I think it has several unusual highs but also some unusual lows, which is why you see so many mixed reviews. I think it's an excellent place, but not for the nit-picky.

I would definitely stay here again.
