“Never Again!!”

Hotel Highland at Biltmore

Oct 28, 2008

I was here on business, definitely not a hotel I would have booked on my own. When I first checked in there was a problem with my corporate credit card. After calling the card company, they offered a manual authorization. Of course, no one at the hotel could figure out how to process a manual authorization, so I ended up paying for it with my personal funds.
The clincher for me happened this morning. I went to the complimentary breakfast and toasted an english muffin. There was an attendant who greeted me while she moved a fruit basket. Another employee (presumably the on duty manager) walked up to her and whispered something. She then approached me and asked me to see my room key. I asked her why I had not been asked for the key the day before and also why another couple who entered the room shortly before me were not being asked. Her reply was simply "we ask everyone". I witnessed a man from a seminar in the hotel come into the same room and get a cup of coffee without being questioned. I told the manager that I hope it was worth angering a customer over an english muffin. Even if I hadn't been a guest of the hotel, was it really worth pissing of a guest? He had nothing to say. I've already informed my company so that they would be sure not to send any other staff members here. Anyone thinking of staying here should heed this and the other reviews. Keep looking!

“In need of its renovations but good location”

The furnishings are looking very tired, and the advertised renovations are definitely needed. The furniture is a bit worn, but useable, although a few things in my room eg desk lamp, microwave, didn't work.

Having said that, I got a fantastic deal - I guess they are selling off rooms cheap whilst they wait for the refit. I stayed here for under $40 a night!

The hotel is excellently located in a very safe area, within walking distance to the Biltmore Fashion Park, many good restaurants, and department stores. If and when the refit comes off, this would be a great place to stay, although worryingly I saw no sign of construction actually taking place.

The outdoor swimming pool was also nice in the evenings after a long, hot day. The hotel operates a free shuttle service from the airport too, which isn't advertised on the website.

“Doesn't honor low rate guarantee”

This hotel was recommended to me when I was in Phoenix on business due to it's location. I would not have selected it on my own. It is in need of renovation, although I believe this is planned for this summer. I booked it through the hotel website, even though I could have booked it cheaper on hotels.com and another online booking site because the hotel website has a "low price guarantee". According to that, I would actually come out ahead booking through them. I followed the guidelines exactly. I contacted them twice within 24 hours of booking but received no reply. I mentioned it on check-in but was told that the clerk didn't know about it and I would have to take care of it when I checked out. I asked about it again on check-out (a Sunday) and the clerk said she didn't know about it but would talk to the manager the following day and would fax me. I brought email copies of my previous attempts to contact them but she didn't want those. I told her I was concerned because of the lack of response from them previously, but she assured me that I would be hearing from them the next day. Needless to say, I didn't. I don't understand why this guarantee is such a surprise to everyone when it is clearly advertised (still is) on their website.
