We booked my sister here while my wife and I stayed with family in Scottsdale. Researching on-line, it looked like the Artisan would be in an area (midtown Phoenix) with close access to restaurants, shopping, etc, but the only thing within close walking distance was an adult book store! As reviewer ktgrrrl commented, on-site restaurant was undergoing renovation as were other parts of the hotel. There are indeed artworks all over the walls and ceilings- be aware that many of them feature (artistic) nudity, so this may turn off some. My sister mentioned to the desk staff that the hotel was very dark. They told her several guests had similar comments. It seems to be an attempt at atmosphere that hasn't quite succeeded. We could not access wireless internet from my sister's 7th floor room. Didn't try lobby. Also, at least in January, 2007, there was a LOT of street work being done in the area, so access was not the easiest. All things considered, this is a hotel with the possibility of being at least a little special, but it's not quite there yet.

Got a good deal at the Artisan Hotel in Phoenix via Hotwire, but had no idea what to expect. The room itself was fine: clean, large, everything worked. Aside from that, there are zero extras: there's a pool outside and a computer in the lobby, but otherwise, nothing. The website I had visited claimed there was a restaurant (in construction), a workout facility (none), etc etc. I couldn't even find a vending machine. The overall concept of the boutique hotel is that of some sort of art history class. There's great works of art all over the walls, ceiling, etc. Unfortunately, everything else is black and dark dark dark. The lobby is not exactly inviting, in fact, it's darn-well creep-crawly. Not what an exhausted traveler wants to see upon first inspection. Would I stay there again? Not really.
