“Absolutely superb!!”

Coup des Tartes

Jul 23, 2008

If you are in Phoenix, don't miss the opportunity to enjoy this superb restaurant!
This is a quaint restaurant with only about 9 tables in the main dining area. Many promise and few restaurants deliver a great meal. This restaurant delivers with a style and grace missing from far too many restaurants nowadays.
Food is simply spectacular. I had the Roquefort Salad, listed as "Our divine combination of organic greens, roasted apples, warm toasted hazelnuts, dried figs and Premier Cru Roquefort." A great combination of temperature, texture and flavor. I can easily see why this is their signature salad.
For entree I had the Lamb Shank, listed as "100% natural grass fed Australian lamb coated in warm spices and served Moroccan style atop couscous with a harissa spiced vegetable ragout studded with dried fruits." Good portion size and a scintillating combination of flavors. I can see again why this is their house specialty!
Dessert was a delicate shortbread base, topped with a raspberry and chocolate layer. Simple, fresh and very flavorful.

Service is prompt and attentive, without being overly anxious.
I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at this delightful restaurant, where dining and relaxing is a welcome focus for the service team there.
Car pool if you are going there with a group of people, as parking is limited.
Due to the limited number of tables, I would suggest that you call ahead for seating, to make sure you will get a table.
This restaurant is also a BYOB restaurant. Current prices are $9 per 750ml bottle.

“Romantic with good food”

Coup des Tartes

This little restaurant is a gem within Phoenix. The food is good, not the best you have ever had, but definitely worth the price. You can't leave without trying the Brie with carmalized apples! Very yummy. I didn't care for the brulee which was served cold and had very little crust on top, but the chocolate cheese cake was superb.
We liked the BYOB aspect since we collect wines at home.
We were seated in the back room which was perfect until the table of 4 was seated next to us. They should take out the table for four and just make it all tables for two because it gets too noisy, especially in a little room and after the party has a glass of wine or two. Next time I will just eat in the main dining room.
I also think they should dim the lights at night to give it more ambience. Again there was more ambience in the main dining room. It was just too bright in the back room.
I had the lobster which was pretty good, a little overcooked in my opinion.
My husband had the filet mignon which he says was excellent.
The service was superb and our waitstaff attentive.
I would go back again for a romantic dinner, but will request the main dining room next time.

Great restaurant, but the noise level can get a bit out of hand.

I visited Coup des Tartes back in February and wish I had left the review then, when I could remember each and everything we ate. Four of us enjoyed this restaurant together while on a business trip.

Our table of 4 shared 2 appetizers and 2 salads. We each ordered a different entree and dessert and all tasted all of them. Each bite of each dish at our table was absolutely amazing. We were quite surprised that each plate of food that came to our table was as well-prepared, delicious and interesting!

Additionally, each server who attended our table was friendly and attentive.

I would highly recommend this restaurant! It's a small seating area, so be sure to make reservations.

After seeing such good reviews, I decided to try this place for an anniversary dinner, given my wife's penchant for French food. After we entered, we weren't addressed by the hostess for five minutes (not a good start). The crowd was a bit older, well dressed and seemingly happy to pay the high prices and corkage fee. (I'm glad my wife made me change my attire -- otherwise I would've felt under-dressed). The brie appetizer was delicious, as was the chocolate mocha tarte. The entrees we had were good, but not off the charts (imho). My wife's chicken was undercooked, and the server (who was very good) was quick to remove it from the bill. While my lamb & cous cous was flavorful, I wouldn't get it again (although my wife really liked it), despite it being the "signature" dish (perhaps, I just have bad memories of my mom's orange crockpot).
All in all, the clear flaws were outweighed by the (mostly) delicious food, quaint atmosphere, and good service, just pushing it over the line into "above average."
