Finding Gallo Blanco attached to the lobby of a hotel one would never guess this place serves the best traditional Mexican food we have ever had and at great prices too. At happy hour selected offerings are $1 off. That makes the Cochinita Taco and the Carne Asada Taco cost $1.75!!! We started out with one of each of the top four tacos on the menu, the two above, a Fish Taco (rock fish), and Verduras de Temporada (vegetables). The later is spectacular and one had a good cut of pumpkin that was unbelievably sweet. They come standing up in a taco holder. Each of us took a taste and we immediately ordered four more of the same.
There is so much to enjoy and marvel at, a reasonable length review is difficult. Try the Elote Callejero (ear of corn on the cob with cotija cheese and smoked paprika), we ordered two after seeing it go by to another table. The guacamole is relatively expensive ($5.50 during happy hour) but contains just right spicing and chunks of avocado. Kids under 10 eat free from the kids menu and I found the "plain" guacamole as good as the adult guac. And do not miss the Pork Quesadilla ($3 at happy hour) with braised pork, Oaxaca cheese and jalapeno relish. Our 6 year old grandson demanded another and ate the whole thing himself.
Finally, DO NOT SKIP DESSERT! Above all order the orange cake which is surprisingly tasty without being either too cake-like blank or acidic. We also had the Crepas con Cajeta which was three large, thick crepes drizzled in cajeta (like caramel sauce) and topped with platano (cooked banana variety).
We live some 100 miles away in Tucson, but will surely drive the 200 mile round trip occasionally just to visit Gallo Blanco. I only hope reviews like this don't overwhelm such a gem of a café.
