We stayed at the Biltmore August 1-6th. Even though we live in Arizona, this was our first time to the Biltmore. It is a beautiful, historic hotel and resort that is tucked away quietly in the middle of a busy city.
We were there for a conference and were lucky to be able to secure a very good rate for the room. I was very excited to be staying there for the first time! The grounds are beautiful and it was amazing to see the photos on the wall of the resort in its prime! There were so many very cool people who have stayed there and this resort is certainly part of our heritage in our beautiful state.
The staff was very friendly upon check-in. When I went to my room, I was under-whelmed to say the least. It did have a very nice view of the golf course, but was extremely dated and very worn. I checked out a friends room, only three doors down and was interested to learn that he had a nicely renovated room. Since I was planning on having a young visitor I asked the front desk if I could have a new room. They were very helpful and showed me a few rooms until I found one that was more suitable for my needs.
I got help from a nice bellman and got all my stuff to a new room. I thought I was in heaven until I saw that there was no soap in my room and there were used towels in the bathroom. I tried to find a member of the cleaning staff who could understand my desire to have the room cleaned and finally found someone who understood what I was trying to say. I then left for awhile to go to class. When I returned to the room I thought it was hot, so turned down the A/C. Nothing, still very, very hot in the room. I then went rinse something out in the sink and the plunger broke, not allowing the water to drain. I called the front desk and the sent someone immediately to fix the stuff. He quickly fixed the sink and said he thought it may take awhile for the room to cool down. A short while later I got a call from the front desk to ensure that everything had been fixed. I told them that the sink got fixed, but the room was still very hot! The immediately offered to give me another room. So, once again, I packed back up and moved to a very close room. This one had working A/C and was heaven!
That night I went to bed and hear the toilet running constantly. I was embarrassed to call the front desk and complain again, so I left a note for the maid. When I came back to my room the toilet was fixed. However, one flush and it broke again. Again, I was tired of complaining, so I took the lid off the tank to see what the problem was. The toilet needed a new flushing mechanism. I ended up leaving the lid off the tank the entire time and literally lifting the chain to manually flush the toilet.
We ate several times at the Frank and Albert's restaurant. The food was fantastic each time, but holy cow the prices! $4 for a soda.....really? If you go to this restaurant, please ask for VICTORIA! She was one of the best servers we have had anywhere. Very helpful and friendly. She helped us entertain our young daughter and went out of her way to ensure we were happy. I guess that people who are fortunate enough to stay there and pay the normal rate don't blink an eye at a $50 breakfast, but for us it was a bit steep. The food, like I said was great, but a bit much for our budget. I will come back for special occasions for sure though!
All in all it was a really fun stay. It was great to stay in a hotel with so much history and the architecture was beautiful. I am a huge Frank Lloyd Wright fan, so big thrill to stay here. There are some really great restaurants nearby, check out DELUX and REVOburrito for sure!!!!!
Ask for a newly renovated room and one close to the lobby. Rooms far away are quite a hike!
