We've had two glorious date nites at The Breadfruit. Just this month, we took my best buddy from high school down for the evening. We started at the bar, a must! The rum cocktails are fantastic. My favorite from the nite was the rum punch that had some fantastic basil and ginger notes. My husband raves about the Dark & Stormy.
The food second time around was better than our first visit. We enjoyed the scallops and shrimp starters. The scallops are to die for. Don't miss them! Spicy jerk shrimp were perfectly done on the starter, but the shrimp entree and our shrimp on our previous visit were slightly overdone.
I had the mussels this time and I'm so glad I did. They were tender and accompanied by a nice crusty baguette. I only needed more of that sauce! It occurred to me also that there is no bread service, and I regretted not ordering a plate of plaintains with our meal. There was a starch that was lacking in my particular selections. Note: the dining room is small and the menu is limited.
Next time, I will pass the sweet potato dessert. I adore sweet potatoes, and without thinking, I re-ordered this dessert on our second visit. Dissappointed again. The creme brulee was a far better choice.
Both trips culimated in a cigar in the back garden and well, more rum....
Word to the wise. Get a taxi and enjoy as much as you can! You'd take a plane to/from Jamaica itself, so a taxi is a bargain really...
We will be back. The whole experience is charming and romantic. Be transported to the caribbean islands in the heart of the desert.
We ran into issues with our bill this trip that was annoying. We had a bar tab, then a table tab, then a second bar tab. Because the bill was paid on the same credit card 3 times, there were problems with their system. Also, the waitress, (maybe she was new?), didn't get the right copy of the receipt and my friend's credit card had to be run twice for the dinner bill. I'm guessig this has all turned out ok on his credit card statement, but this is a small well run place, and given the $$$ we were talking about, these nagging payment issues put a damper on our general good mood. Besides, I'm not sure why we couldn't just keep our tab open from bar, to table, to post dinner drinks. But, it might have been just us. If it is their system, I hope they figure out a way to make this easier for future diners!
