What makes Phoenix unique is the Sonoran desert. And South Mountain is among the best places in town to see it. Surprisingly, bikers, hikers, runners and dog walkers share the paths without much conflict. Myself, I'm a fan of Hidden Valley. But I've been all over the park and love it all. Beause of its South Phoenix location, it is something of a melting pot for Phoenecians, who have not always distinguished themselves as the most tolerant folks in the world. The place is an expansive reminder of what Phoenix looked like hundreds of years ago, and should help remind us how amazing it is that millions of folks now live on land that once llooked like the paths of South Mountain.
