“A couple days of peace and quiet for our anniversary.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013 via mobile

First I would start by saying we will definately be back this summer! That being said, we picked a bad time to come. We thought we were picking a great spring week to visit but it was cold and snowy for most of it! We couldn't drive any of the forest roads because they were still closed for the winter and hiking didn't seem like a good idea in the snow!

We spent quite a bit of time at the hotel trying to keep ourselves entertained. We had a studio in the main lodge (next time a private cabin for sure!) which was pretty clean, had a faux fireplace (didn't even provide any heat-only complaint) and a completely furnished kitchenette. We were able to utilize their grills one afternoon and they were spotless! One night we ate dinner at the bar because the main restaurant wasn't open for the season yet. Highly recommend trying the pizza! Very yummy! Durring the day we used some of the ammenities-ping pong table and bocce ball. Surprisingly, we had a really good time!

Bottom line, we both work in the hospitality industry in Sedona and feel that sometimes we have unfair expectations of customer service and hotels in general, but the staff (Jan at the front desk specifically) are fantastic and the resort provides some great ammenities that we will be able to use when in season!

A couple tips: If worried about privacy, get a cabin. Inside the studio was fine and quiet but outside on the patio you were almost forced to join the conversation of your neighbor because they are so close. Also, if you enjoy a drink (or two or three) know that in the off season, the bar has very limited hours.. 4-9! Finally, ask Jan for any recommendations you might need! She is very knowledgable and just a sweet lady!

Thank you for providing your thoughts about your most recent stay here at Kohl’s Ranch Lodge. Our fireplaces are propane based, but yes, they are faux. We feel the benefits and costs of maintaining a fireplace of this nature outweighs the benefits and costs of having a real fireplace. Unfortunately the weather had a somewhat negative effect on your overall experience here. Nonetheless, we were glad to see you had a great time in spending your anniversary here. We were delighted to see that our staff (Jan, especially) provided excellent Customer Service, and we truly feel her level of service is typical of all of our staff. Your tips and recommendation of our resort are truly appreciated, and we look forward to seeing you again this summer!

We stayed 7 nights in a what they called a "rustic" 2 bedroom/1 bath cabin. (there are deluxe and there are rustic cabins) We were fortunate to obtain one of the few pet friendly rooms. We hear that they are hard to come by and that you may not be able to get one walking in off the street. You will have to check, if this interests you. For us, it made all of the difference in the world to have our 9 year old family dog with us. That is why we came to this place to begin with. There is an onsite kennel if you need it, however.
We did not know that there was a heater until the third night. A window type air conditioner also has heat! (glad I brought my really thick robe for the cold mornings and evenings) We brought most of our food in our ice chest and the small kitchen was more than adequate. A great BBQ was located outside in the little front yard. The stove is small but had 4 burners and good oven. The microwave was the small timer type. The coffee pot was a Cuisanart but slow. The refrigerator was a normal size. We didn't use the small dishwasher at all.
There were a total of 3 flat screen TVs. There was a nice fireplace with a bit of heat. The bedrooms are small. The second one barely has room to walk around. The wonderful deck had plenty of room and had a great hot tub on it. The hot tube was monitored by maintenance staff every day. We had a lovely view of the creek and pines all around. There were 2 nice rocking chairs and a table and chairs, too.
I will list a few things that were "rustic" but they were not critical or bothersome for us. When you hear the word "rustic" you never really know what it means. The paint was chipped on the front door and kitchen window sill. There was no washer and dryer in the unit (but there was an onsite laundry). No garbage disposal. The lighting was a bit poor for reading. The only mirror was small and in the bathroom. Not good cell phone connections. Even the one computer in the lodge was very slow and unusable at times. Because of this, they allowed you to call anywhere in the US for free from your room. It was 17 miles to the town of Payson. No place to ride bikes very well. We took our bikes but there were no riding trails, just hills. Wouldn't take them if we get to return. If room allowed, we wish we knew to take fishing gear. We don't know anything about the laws there but the water was inviting. Could ask them if it interests you before going.
We went to the onsite Zane Gray Restaurant the first night.. It had a nice atmosphere. I had the coconut crusted salmon and it was really good. It was under $20 for the meal, so you can judge whether that is a lot or not.
The staff could not have been nicer. The cabin is a quiet get away. We sat and read for hours on end. I went to the pool to read but there was noisy music from the bar. There may have been partying in the bar in the evenings, but I don't know. It was a wonderful memory and we would love to return. Since the trip put 2002 miles on our truck, it won't be any time soon, however. We would certainly recommend this place even though it is not a 4 or 5 star place. The pines, the dog, the hot tub, the peace--- No complaints from us...We were happy campers!

Room Tip: If you need a pet friendly room, call the resort staff to clarify before you book.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

My husband and I purchased a living social deal to this lodge. When we pulled up, it wasn't what I expected, but I was pleasantly suprised. In the pictures and online, it looks much grander and larger, but when we arrived, it seemed small. However, when we walked into the lobby to check in, it was nice and clean and very inviting.

We ended up getting a studio room and it was a good size. It included a king bed, a small dining table, a fireplace, which is artificial, you can't actually light a fire... a full kitchen including pots, pans, utensils, small fridge, oven, stove and microwave. The nearest grocery store is about 10-15 minutes away in town. So you could purchase food there and take advantage of the small kitchen in the room. The bathroom area was small, but still served it's purpose. Our studio had small patio which was open to the parking lot. I though we would get a lot of noise since our patio backed up to the front lobby entrance, but it wasn't too bad.

The website claims that they have close hiking and biking trails, but they don't start from the hotel. You either have to go across the highway to FR 289 or another near by fire road to get to them. They do offer horseback riding and their stables are right behind the lodge. The cost is $30/hr per person. They also have a heated pool, spa, and onsite restaurant, Zane Grey.

All in all, it was a nice relaxing weekend. I would stay here again.

but if you want to leave those pesky critters at home, I bet you would be happy too.Just a few miles away from Payson.the best thing you can do for yourself is to to "unplug" and relax...if you get one of those cabins over looking the creek.. most of them have their own private jacuzzi on the t=ck!!(told ya to leave the kids home...)
Front desk is very helpful and friendly tons of outdoor activities included!!!

First I will provide our evaluation of the lodge then I will provide info on the restaurant. On a scale of 1 to 10, The Staff all earned a 10. Every contact was excellent. They could not have been more friendly and helpful, this includes the Desk Clerks, the maintenance persons and the Housecleaning.
We would give the Room would receive an 8. Nice king bed with a large flat screen TV, micro, freezer, and a refrig, stove top with appliances/dishes etc. We were unaware that our room would not receive daily service. We only needed towels and were quickly provided them when requested. However, we would recommend that Kohls place a note in the room or a small tag at some location in the room that servicing is only on the third day.
Location would also get an 8, as kohls is located aprox 13 miles from Payson and you are limited for food as the restaurant was not open and dinner was only available after 5:00 pm. Nice views and great hiking.
Grounds and activities would receive a 7. Not bad, but not perfect. Actually we enjoyed walking around and relaxing.
The Restaurant would receive a 5. Actually the restaurant is closed at this time of the year due to limited guests. The saloon was where the dinners were served. Prime Rib was their special so we each ordered an open prime rib sandwich med. rare. They were well done and we figured that they were left over from the week end as Prime Rib is on the week end menu and it would be difficult to uncook them. I ordered onion rings as a side, yuk - frozen and not good ones. One person did the waiting, the bussing and the serving. The second night Prime Rib is still on their special, I ordered a Kobe burger with bacon and cheese - $15. I took it to go and found that the bacon was not included.
We really enjoyed our stay but will stay away from the restaurant next time. Next time we will plan on fixing our food or drivie into Payson.
Overall, I really believe kohls wants to make their guests happy and we were.

My daughter and I spent our Spring Break vacation in Payson from Wed 3/13-Sat 3/16. We stayed in a studio and the room was great! It had a small kitchen area that had everything you need to cook but the food! The bathroom was very clean (including the shower curtain). I am usually someone that puts a few layers of my own blankets on the bed before I will even sit on it but this bed seemed so clean. The sheets were so white, everything felt new. The nice size tv was mounted to the wall and there was a DVD Player. We had our own little semi private balcony with some comfortable chairs to sit on and enjoy the night air. Karen and Jacqueline at the front desk were very friendly and helpful. We just loved Mark who kept the fires going inside and out, he was such a nice guy. The lobby area was so pretty with a huge fireplace and there is plenty of seating to relax and enjoy the fire or play a game (the desk has a ton of games that you can borrow). We only ate in the restaurant one time and only got fries and onion rings because we were not that hungry. They were very good and the service was great! We had never been to Payson before so we spent alot of time in town. Next time we visit we are going to plan on spending more time at the lodge so we can enjoy everything they have to offer (like the sparkling clean heated pool / spa). I would highly recommend Kohl’s Ranch to everybody, I can't wait to go back!

My husband & I spent the weekend here & really enjoyed the lodge & surrounding area.
The Lodge is rustic yet modern. Front desk personnel were friendly & helpful. The lobby is attractive & there were always people sitting around the fire.
The rooms are not fancy but clean & comfortable. I liked the gas fireplace & the rocking chairs out on the little patio. Didn't love the pillows (too mushy?) but not really a big deal.
There's so much to do in this area, it would be surprising if anyone was ever bored. There's a heated pool, which we didn't try out.
The Zane Grey restaurant is right on the property & very convenient.

Room Tip: Not sure there is a bad room but noticed the little cabins right off the creek, those would be reall...

We are happy to read that you had a relaxing and enjoyable stay here with us, thank you for your words of appreciation. We are slightly surprised to read that you have not been fully satisfied with the quality of pillows as most of our guest comment they would not mind taking them home, however we are glad this has not marred your stay and we hope to see you again in the future!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
When you first arrive at Kohl's Ranch Lodge in Payson, Arizona you will be sure you have truly cornered a little piece of paradise. The location is what creates this setting, which borders on perfection. Kohl's Ranch Lodge is at the base of the Mogollon Rim and on the banks of Tonto Creek. All of this comes together in the largest Ponderosa Pine Forest in the world. This stunning, off the beaten path section of Arizona's back country was made most famous by author Zane Grey, who stirred up vivid imagery of a striking land throughout his tales of the Old West. Not to mention, the people here are known for their historically famous, western hospitality. You will revel in the casual and friendly atmosphere that makes each stay here an inviting experience that leaves visitors wanting to come back for more. Enjoying Payson, Arizona: This area has been dubbed the "heart of Arizona" because of its history and scenery. It is truly a stunning and unpredictable back country area of Arizona. Here, you may even experience snowfall in winter months. While you are staying in your subtly elegant surroundings, you can enjoy a multitude of activities. This is an area that was practically made for experiencing horseback riding along the dusty trails. Of course, this also means the country is ideal for similar activities such as hiking. Most of the area surrounding Payson is the Tonto National Forest, part of the United States Forest Service, so you will find a well-maintained park service to enjoy for many of your outdoor adventures. Other areas are under the jurisdiction of tribal governments, which means they are also kept up. In some areas, fishing is another very popular outdoor event to enjoy. From the Tonto Natural Bridge to the Tonto Natural Bridge State Park to the Tonto Apache Indian Reservation, you will find scenery and activities in or around Payson, Arizona to fill your days. Kohl's Ranch Lodge Accommodations: After a long day of hiking, biking or fishing, you may want to simply relax and unwind in your private room, maybe even bask in the air conditioning and watch a movie on the DVD player provided in each room. You can also enjoy the outdoors without ever leaving the grounds. Serve up some BBQ from the cookout area and soak or swim in either the outdoor hot tub or heated outdoor pool. You will love your time at Kohl's Ranch Lodge. ... more   less
