“Gorgeous and Friendly, left too soon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2012

This is one spectacular JW location unlike any other we have visited with a friendly international staff; Jamaica, Germany, Bulgaria, to name a few. The acres and acres of grounds are overwhelmingly lush with spectacular desert trees, plants, shrubs, flowers and cacti, a world class botanical garden, with quail and rabbits darting about. The Spa ranks with the most beautiful we have ever visited in the world, with restaurant/bar, huge outdoor pool and amazingly attentive staff, quiet and away from the equally beautiful main swimming pool. We had plans to go out to dinner, but the appetizers and the $5 Margaitas at Happy Hour(3-6PM) around the fire pits was too much fun to leave, met great people, excellent live band outdoors on Friday night. Wish the house music system wasn't Rock & Roll: Average White Band playing Cut the Cake at 7:00 AM breakfast(really) or even Michael Jackson Thriller around the fire pit at 5:00 PM seemed out of place with the mature, adult, international guests, who all laughed in agreement that it didn't seem to fit the serene beauty of the setting. Maybe Smooth Jazz would be better. But everything else, our room, etc. were terrific and we plan to make a yearly pilgrimage there.

Room Tip: The rooms are all in clusters of 3 or 4 to a building, some one story some two story, spead out over...

JW Marriott was truly gorgeous. The grounds were incredible with plenty of expansive space and a lovely pool with separate 2-lane lap pool. Restaurant choices were varied and one would never need to leave the resort (no need to rent a car). The standard rooms are villa-like and have quite a bit of character. In fact, the rooms straddle the line of being dated (i.e., bathrooms seem old with shower/tub combo) which is why my review is a 4 of 5 stars. See below for pros and cons and make the decision yourself:

Pros:
1. R Bar for happy hour and Rita's Kitchen
2. Lobby - historic touches and great environment
3. Room does not feel like your typical Marriott or Westin
4. Patio with chairs and tables for each unit
5. Pool with comfortable lounge chairs and servers
6. Outside restaurant (at pool) with outdoor fireplaces
7. Staff were friendly
8. Laid back and comfortable atmosphere
9. No charge for parking
10. Robes and slippers
11. Safe surrounding neighborhood
12. Hiking trails behind resort (near spa)

Cons:
1. Regular room regularly runs $300/night
2. Separate charge to enter spa/fitness center (despite charging a resort fee)
3. Resort fee nightly
4. Dish/cable was sketchy (I wanted to watch ball drop for New Year's)
5. Dated bathrooms

Overall check-in and check-out were a good experience. The JW Marriott chain does it right when it comes to providing a unique hotel and restaurant experience. It feels like a destination location rather than a business hotel.

If the price tag does not scare you away, you will not be disappointed.

We have stayed here at least a dozen + times. From over night on the way to the airport, to a quick night after a rock and roll show, swim meet weekend, anniversary celebration…50th birthday week.
We live in the area, and when we think of 5 star Marriott best of the bunch hotels, or AAA 5 diamond hotels the Camel Back Inn is one of the few hotel/resort is one that comes to mind. Truly, if more hotel and resorts followed this Marriott approach there would be a better success rate among the travel industry.
We started staying here back in the late 80's when separate pools/restaurant that were just for the "spa" use was a new idea/concept. It was awesome then and it is awesome now. It is nice to be able to go to a pool and not hear kids playing “Marco Polo.”
Over the past few years the hotel has gone thru renovations, which is a good thing. This resort been around for quite a long time, and it had begun to get dated.
We have a couple favorite rooms. One is an over size guest room called a casita with a sun deck. This one let’s you park right out in front of the door, which is a nice feature. especially when you don’t travel light, like we do. The sun deck is massive, and incredible. The blazing AZ sun is on the deck all day, and into the evening, and during the early summer, it is fantastic to sit outside with snacks, a drinky and hubby all day.
The next room we absolutely love is a two room suite with pool. This is an unbelievable room. Unfortunately we have tried to book it repeatedly and it is never available. It is two bedrooms, two bathroom, living room, dining room, full kitchen and a FULL size heated pool and patio. We had an hard to believe week when we stayed in this room. Everything was perfect! Upon arrival we were treated to a massive fruit and goodie basket which included enough snacks to hold us over until we decided to go to the market two days later.
We always use room service rather than going to the restaurants and the JW Marriott Camelback Inn is always cooperative and accommodating in regards to making appetizers for us, even late at night when we get back from shows or concerts.
Thanks JW!

Room Tip: The sun deck room is great during the early summer months if you plan to hang out in the room with a...

We loved it here. Spent a glorious week in one the casitas. Pulling up to the resort is lovely & made us feel special. Front desk staff was professional and HAPPY. Where do you see that anymore?

Fabulous private room(casita) which is free-standing and not connected to any other "room" or people :) Adobe walls, super high, vaulted ceilings, HUGE bathroom, private sunning terrace, charming linens, etc. We were in heaven.

Pool complex is fab...we were there EVERY day, soaking up that glorious desert sun. Tasty cocktails too :) Lunch was very good...they knew us by weeks' end.

Breakfast was good, though not great. Dining room was nice...service was just ok.

Lobby bar was TERRIFIC...we could have parked ourselves there for the entire time :) It had such a nice cozy, inviting feeling to it. Bartender was cordial and the drinks were very good. A++. We did not take any tours from the concierge, as we had a car. It's in a very nice location of Scottsdale...alone, but yet very close. We would gladly return.

The property of hotel is stunning...one of the finest I have ever seen. The area outside the main bar makes this hotel worth visiting. The staff is perfect in every way. The rooms are great but still have the old TVs in typical motel cabinets.

For the last 10 years we have stayed at the "Camelback Inn" through out the year. This year we stayed just before Christmas. The grounds outside, and leading up the the reception area were just beautifully decorated. We had a nice Casita on the ground level near the Main building. We overlooked the lawn and pool area. Parking was just outside our room. Everything was perfect!! The Kids love the pool area and i Loved just sitting and watching the beautiful Arizona Sunset's! What I love the most about this Hotel ... is that you feel like your in the middle of nowhere! You are looking out at "Camelback Mountain and at the base of "Mummy Mountain". At night after dinner we would go to the Main lobby and sit by the tree and listen to the live music in the bar area and then go out front and walk around and look at the Christmas lights and sit by the outdoor fire. a Perfect way to get into the Holiday's.

Room Tip: Choose a room across the Main Lobby & Restaurant area. You have the large lawn in front of you...

Stayed here a few times in 2011. Consistent good service. Rooms clean. Starbucks on location is great. Staff was very welcoming... Front desk, rita's, concierge. Helpful with suggesting activities and restaurants. Recommend to new visitors to Scottsdale, solo or couples. Beautiful views of camelback mountain and small putting golf area onsite. Great experiences!
