4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

We discovered this jewel of a hidaway 12 years ago and can not find a more relaxing place to unwind. The contemporary interiors of the rooms are comfortable. The Mountain Vista suites offer the best views to the west for beautiful sunsets on your private terrace. The reception is always friendly and never a hassel. We were really impressed the first time we arrived. The staff at valet parking greeted us by name and knew which room we would be staying in before we had even checked in at the front desk.
Hotel restaurants are notoriously expensive and The Sanctuary is no exception... breakfast can be a real eye opener here. Dinner is great, but also over priced. Our suggestion...Eat Out...there are so many great restaurants in Phoenix and Scottsdale.
What is important to us ? The facilities are beautiful. The rooms are always clean. The views are hard to beat. The beds are amazingly comfortable. The service is helpful and friendly. The staff makes the place humm and are always smiling. A friendly smile is always a warm greeting. We will continue to return again and again.

Room Tip: It is hard to select, but the Mountain Vista Suites are the best.

Sanctuary Camelback is in a gorgeous setting, and our room had a lovely view. The spa services are extremely good, although also at higher than usual prices. There are relatively few gratis services such as yoga or short hikes (for example, as compared to Miraval in Tucson or Enchantment in Sedona). However, we wondered about whether the hotel was sufficiently staffed when we returned at 4:00 pm after being away for 5 hours and our room had not yet been cleaned - when we called and inquired, we were asked if we wanted to just wait until that evening's turn-down service - we did not and requested immediate maid service so that we could enjoy the room and its balcony before dinner - maid service did not arrive for about 90 more minutes, and then was cursory. And this was for a more expensive suite room. Lack of service level commitment also shown by very slow service at restaurant for dinner, and by being seated at breakfast at a table covered with crumbs (not just a few), and then when we commented on the dirty table, being shown to another un-clean table (third table was fine). The service level at a hotel of this caliber and price should be much, much higher and more consistent.

My husband and I were on vacation in Arizona. We thought we were saving the best for last, but were wrong. The grounds were beautiful and the service was great. The room was not at all what we had hoped for. The interior was made of white concrete walls...not very warm and inviting. There was one kitchen chair to sit on and an uncomfortable lounger with only a partial back rest. We wanted exercise, so we didn't mind the fact that walking around the grounds was at a steep angle. The food was fine, but very high priced for what you received. We would not recommend this place, nor would we ever return.

Room Tip: I wish I could!

Sheila,

Thank you for your review and I am sorry that your stay with us was not perfect. We do have a number of different room options available for our guests and perhaps one of our other options would be more to your liking. I would welcome the opportunity to speak to you about your stay and you can contact me at 480-948-2100.

I spent this past weekend at the Sanctuary Camelback Resort for a relaxing bachelorette party. Unfortunately a lot of different things went wrong during our quick trip to the resort which makes it very unlikely for me to return to the resort.

1. We reserved three rooms with two double beds each since we were going to have three to four ladies in each room. Upon arrival we were told we were "upgraded" to suites with 1 king bed. But that meant that there wasn't enough beds for everyone. So we asked to be "downgraded" to our original reservation but those rooms were not available. So basically, they gave our rooms away and pretended we were upgraded. So we had guests sleeping on the pull out couches, which were not comfortable at all.
2. We got to the pool on the first day and wanted to sit on some lounge chairs. However, half of the tiny pool was reserved for a company retreat. There were empty chairs in the "reserved" area but no lounge chairs available in the non reserved area. We basically had to wait in the pool for chairs to open up. How does a hotel as expensive as this was not have enough lounge chairs?
3. We all did spa services at the hotel on Saturday at 10:45 am as part of the bachelorette party. The great thing was they were able to get 8 spa appointments all at the same time. However, the groom called the spa ahead of time and arranged a surprise champagne toast that was supposed to be waiting for us when we arrived at the spa (he wanted to be a surprise for everyone but had told me about it). When we got to the spa there was no champagne, and when I talked to someone about it they said it was the groom's fault that he had scheduled it to arrive at 10:45 and not prior to that. Really? He was told it would be there beforehand -- and come on, such an insult to blame the groom for this when he called the spa coordinator and asked her to coordinate it. So we rescheduled the champagne to arrive at 12:15 because the brides treatment was ending at 12:30. 12:40 rolled around and there was still no champagne. I have no idea what took them two hours to get champagne? So we just left and asked Eli, the pool manager, to get the champagne delivered to the pool. So the element of surprise was completely ruined. And come on, this cannot be the first time you've had champagne delivered to a spa.

Overall, the resort has a lot of things to work on. I'm not sure how they have been running for this long and not have these flaws worked out. We ended up getting a lot of compensation for all the inconvenience, such as free drinks at the pool, extra bottles of champagne, extra pool credit, etc. However, to be honest, I would have rather it been a flaw free weekend instead of having to work so hard for normal amenities and getting some compensation.

The resort does have a lot of fabulous workers, including Alex in the front desk and Eli at the pool. Both of these gentlemen tried really hard to make us as happy as possible and we really appreciated that. The food at the pool and restaurant is also phenomenal.

In the end we all had a great time, but it was more because of the company (our friends) rather than the actual resort.

Oh, and I almost forgot about our lovely cockroach friend that greeted us in our suite the first night we were there. Definitely the biggest cockroach I have ever seen.

My wife and I spent our 20th anniversary at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain. Our 5 day stay began with the Sunday brunch - very nicely done. Once our casita was available, we were surprised by a bottle of champaign and chocolate covered strawberries - I wish I had thought of that, but it was from the hotel manager. The accommodations were very clean and private. The bell staff were very quick to pick us up in the golf carts and take us to the hotel entrance for dinner as we were at the top of the hill at the base of camelback mountain. Room service for breakfast was always very quick. The Elements restaurant was excellent - food met or exceeded our expectations. The main pool's staff was very attentive, providing food and drinks promptly. We appreciated the fact that not many children were at the resort. We would highly recommend Sanctuary to all of our friends and plan to return there on our next trip to Scottsdale.

Pure paradise. The staff, rooms, property are fabulous. The food is amazing. It doesn't matter if you eat breakfast, lunch, snacks by the pool or dine in the bar or restaurant. Everything on the menu is 5 star. They provide lists of activities and restaurants in the area if you want to venture off the property. They also will arrange car services as needed, to from airport, or just about anywhere.

My weekend at the Sanctuary Resort/Spa in Phoenix with my all adult family was a perfect getaway. Hot and sunny, delicious food, great pool, relaxing spa, beautiful grounds -- I couldn't have asked for a better retreat. Dinner at Elements restaurant with a visit from Chef Beau MacMillian topped off a perfect weekend. I didn't see any young children at the pool -- which added to the tranquil nature of the resort -- but there were some smaller pools which would have been great for families traveling with little ones.

Room Tip: We had 6 in our group. The two casitas were similar, but decorated a little bit different. They wer...
