“Nice Desert get away - came with a high price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012 via mobile

The Montelucia is a very nice property at the base of the Camelback Mountain. It has two pools (one family and one adult only), nice rooms and delicious food on a sprawling piece of property. I had a wonderful time but was left wondering if the price justified the amenities.

If you want to get away from it all, this is a great location. Just know it is a small drive to any shipping or restaurants off property.

My family and I travelled to Paradise Valley on April 14, 2012 from the Boston, MA area. This was our first stay at the Montelucia Resort and Spa and have to say hands down from arrival to departure this was one top resort. Being a Platinum Ambassador with the Intercontinental group we've stayed at many IC hotels around the world, but the Montelucia ranks at the top for grounds and most importantly the staff just ahead of the Intercontinental Hyde Park London.

We arrived just after dark which was a bummer, but the Montelucia reception/courtyard was lit up with the fire pits which is near the patio of MBar. Check in smooth and quick by Nicole then off to our room in the golf cart with Tom. Tom did a great job stopping along the way to our room to point out all the facilities (didn't ask him to, he just did and was appreciated by me and my wife), and hours of operation. Our room was in the Oasis building room #509, which again Tom pointed everything out. The Oasis buildings are a little further away from the main pool Kasbah and restaurants/bar area and has it's own pool, but adult only. We were there with our 11 year old but no matter. The Kasbah pool is larger with a huge hot tub. Our view of Camelback from our ground floor room was spectacular. The room was very spacious, huge bathroom with a very large tub, glass shower and separate toilet area. Nice 42" flat screen television and oval table for working/eating. The patio had a nice lounge and two side chairs and tables.

Sunday morning was our first full day and took my daughter around to scout everything out. Stopped by Crave (every morning) which is a coffee/pastry/sandwich/drink/gift shop. Very friendly staff and great coffee and pastry's. Here's a kicker about Crave, free refills on coffee all day until 6PM if you bring your cup back. Are you kidding me? A 5 start resort giving free refills? Unheard of. May seem silly but I can go through several cups of coffee first thing in the morning. Everything we ate there was very fresh and at a reasonable price too. After this went to Sunday Brunch at Prado. Great choices of eggs, meats, cheese, fruit and freshly made omelets and waffles. Restaurant very open, with French doors that opened up onto the Prado patio (we ate breakfast out there one morning as well which was great and nice to listen to the water fountains). The staff at the Prado were top notch. Arne and Alex our waiters on several occasions were the best. Always had time for answering questions and very attentive. Arne especially was good with puzzles he gave my daughter to solve and all the staff continually greeted and addressed us by name. Dinner at Prado was also delicious. Get the Fritto Misto appetizer which is a combination of calamari, sole, shrimp and zucchini. I had the Filet of Beef which was like cutting into butter and cooked perfectly. My wife has the salmon and was also delicious. They have a kids menu with a great selection all around $10. Again, the staff at Prado were the best I've had in quite some time.

Sunday nights at 7:30pm or so there is a free outdoor movie in the courtyard by reception Mbar (through May I think). We saw Moneyball which was nice as I hadn't seen it yet. Sat at a Mbar table and our waitress Allison great. Had the antipasti, bread and crackers just to nibble on. Very tasty.

Spent most of our time at Kasbah pool. John our pool attendant made sure our pitchers of ice water were always filled (free), and took care of us when we were in need of food from the ROQ Poolside Bistro.

I could go on and on, but all in all it was a great time, albeit too short. The grounds are immaculate, room was spacious, huge bathroom and a very nice patio to just sit out and view the Camelback mountain. It's very quiet too. No traffic can be heard. Just birds chirping and little bunny rabbits hopping around the grounds. The food and prices at Prado, ROQ, Mbar and Crave were great. All of that is nice, but what made the trip for me and my family was the staff. If I could give a rating higher than 5 it would be a 10. I told the manager at Montelucia this already and commented that all other hotel/resort staff should come to them for training in customer service.

Thank you Montelucia staff. Job well done. We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Rooms further away from the Kasbah pool area will be quieter. Remember that Oasis is a "adult...

I was there for a business meeting, and the facilities were excellent. The hotel is spread out over a large area, but the walk from the rooms to the ballroom/meeting areas were not too bad. Meeting facilities were excellent, as were the meals both in the meetings and after.

They have 2 beautiful pool areas - one adult only, the other for families, and they looked great (the weather was a bit too cool and breezy when we were there.) The hotel is relatively close to the airport, which makes it a good location for a business meeting to which you can bring your family.

BTW - LOTS of machines in the workout room!

Stayed here and was going to eat at Crave, until we saw dogs everywhere ! So, we drove
over to Royal Palms Resort and had a wonderful dinner for six....it was such a lovely environment,
we checked out the rooms, and decided to stay THERE on our next trip !!!

So, I guess all the dog madness worked out for us in the long run.

OH NO...you were walking in to our "Yappy Hour" at Crave, our coffee shop! We have this once a month and it is benefitting local pet charities. You should come back and experience PRADO Restaurant with our new Chef, Michael Cairns!

We went here for our anniversary weekend and loved it! The room was very spacious and the decor was beautiful. The blinds on the windows worked so well you could sleep all day if you wanted! The walk in shower was fabulous and so was the separate tub. The bathroom had plenty of room in it so you did not feel crowded if more than one person was getting ready. The patio with the ceiling fan, lounger and chairs was also a nice touch. We stayed by the main pool and it wasn't noisey at all. It was a great location as it was kind of in the middle of the resort. The grounds were beautiful and we loved sitting by the fire pits at night. The food at ROQ was great. I wasn't impressed with the selection at Prado. If there was more of a selection we may have eaten there more than once. Other than that everything was exceptional and we are looking forward to a return trip - maybe this time with the kids.

We came to Arizona for a few days of much needed rest and relaxation and the Montelucia proved to be an excellent choice to accomplish our goal. The atmosphere was wonderful and (as advertised) the color scheme, appointments, and architecture are all Mediterranean themed, which we found to be a pleasant departure from the typical desert (beige, beige, and more beige) motifs so common in this area.

We booked an Oasis Pool King room with a package that provided for a complimentary upgrade and we were initially given a room (in which we spent our first night), that while clean, nicely appointed, and large, was very dark and afforded minimal privacy, as it was on the first floor with a patio that was open to the pool area. After asking to be moved, we were much, much happier in the second floor Camelback view room (also overlooking the Oasis Pool) where we spent the remainder of our stay, which was light and bright and much more private.

The Prado Restaurant was excellent! The food and service for both breakfast and dinner were wonderful. Sitting on the terrace for breakfast is highly recommended. In the evening, cocktails were wonderful as well.

One night of the stay we were somewhat inconvenienced by a large private event that took over much of the public area, making it challenging to navigate in an out of the property and back and forth to our room. In addition, we did note that there were quite a large number of business functions/meetings taking place at the property throughout our stay, so while it did not particularly bother us, if that is something that might detract from your vacation experience this might not be the property for you.

The Spa is another highlight of the Montelucia. It is not to be missed. It is an emense Moroccan themed complex with all imaginable spa services. The Spa even has it's own small rooftop pool overlooking the Camelback mountains. We couldn't imagine a better place to relax after a wonderful couples massage.

We will definitely return to the Montelucia the next time we take another desert holiday!

Room Tip: Avoid first floor rooms facing the Oasis pool (Building #7), as they are dark and lack privacy. W...

We stayed at the IC Montelucia during September 2010 but I somehow forgot to make a review when back at home. We slept two nights in this hotel during a three week US trip including New York (Renaissance Times Square), Las Vegas (Palazzo), San Diego (Grand del Mar) and Santa Monica (Fairmont). We really liked the hotel and the service and I could not find anything that we did not like. The breakfast was good and we had dinner once at Prado and once at the BBQ. However, the Prado was better. The valet parking, check-in and check-out were smooth and without any issues. We had booked two oasis poolside rooms and all of us agreed that the rooms, the view and also the bathrooms, in particular the huge shower, were excellent. Although not so good as the rooms at the Grand del Mar in San Diego but still great.

All in all we enjoyed our stay at the IC Montelucia and I would not hesitate to go back when in the area next time.
