My family and I enjoyed the vacation of a liftetime when we visited Samoa and stayed at Coconuts in Maninoa for nearly three weeks. We booked Fale B, a delightful bungalow right on the beach with a bedroom for our two children and one for us, adjoined by a comfortable living room with a stocked fridge and cane furniture. The Samoa style architecture is charming and blends in beautifully with the natural surroundings, and the walls were covered with colorful murals that depicted Samoan history. We swam in the refreshing gecko style pool, where our children made friends with kids from New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina, and snorkeled in the ocean right outside our door. We purchased the meal plan and indulged ourselves in Mika's first rate cuisine. Friday night was movie night and Saturday we all enjoyed and even participated in the local fire dance. It was fantastic. Coconuts is a unique, one of a kind establishment where one can relax and indulge in the authentic serenity of Samoa. The staff was kind and accomodating, and Ned, the manager, helped us arrange day adventures, including a car rental for a trip to neighboring Savaii, which we also enjoyed, though truth be told, after staying at Coconuts, we couldn't wait to get back for a few more days of comfort and luxury, and one last sunset while sipping one of Mika's special concoctions served in a coconut shell at the polished wood bar. It was far and away the best vacation we've ever had, and we're already planning a return trip to Samoa next year. One other thing, regardless of your spiritual persuasion, don't miss Sunday morning services at the local church - the warm atmosphere and lovely singing are an inspiring way to start the day and provide an "insider's glimpse" into the local way of life.

My husband and I have enjoyed two seperate vacations to Coconuts and look forward to more. The hospitality, graciousness of the staff and accomodations were wonderful. The food was the best---wait until you order a picnic for your day's excursion and find your lobster salad nestled in a lobster tail shell and accompanied with all the goodies imaginable...what a feast for a picnic. The Saturday evening entertainment was superb, the surroundings absolutely beautiful and our stay was perfect. We highly recommend a week of relacation or activities that were arranged when we asked for things to do. It was truly a wonderful time in paradise!!

My wife & I together with our 3 young adult children have just returned from 10 day trip to Samoa, stayed 1 night Apia, 2 at Litia Sini, see separate review, and 6 at Coconuts. Staying first at Litia's probably coloured our view on Coconuts a bit, we all enjoyed our couple of days there and no one was ready to leave.
For those interested in Coconuts I have summarised our impressions.
1. Stayed in two treehouse rooms, one up one down, the rooms were very nice, upstairs best, a good size with nice bathroom and large verandah, the rooms had a nice feel, not your typical sterile hotel room. The Treehouses are set back a bit from water but nave good views of the lagoon, only draw back was some messy construction work going on directly in front which you had to look over.
2. The lagoon in front of Coconuts all though nice to look at is no where near as good as other spots on the island for swimming and snorkeling, we were glad we had hired a car in Apia, most days we toured the island, and found better beaches nearby.
3. We found the restaurant a bit disappointing, after reading that it was the best in Samoa, we were a bit over the food after the first couple of days, we were glad we didn't opt for the meal deal, this allowed to eat elsewhere some days, including a couple of meals at Sinalei Resort next door.
4. Coconuts promotes itself as a laid back resort, I don't know what laid back is supposed to mean but we found most of the staff and service so laid back that I would describe it as disinterested. We certainly found the staff at other places we visted in Samoa more interested and friendly.

I know there have been mixed reviews on Coconuts, our overall impression is, nice rooms, a good central location on the south coast for touring, reasonable swimming, ok but not great restaurant, staff attitude and service need some work.

  • Liked — nice large rooms and bathrooms, good verandah and views
  • Disliked — service quality fairly patchy

My husband and I honeymooned here in August 2001 we wanted to go somewhere that nobody else we knew had been. We were not dissapointed. Samoa is a wonderful place to relax and the people are really friendly. We spent 2 weeks at Coconuts and broke this up with a 3 night stay at Aggie Grey's in the middle (wish we hadn't bothered with Aggie Grey's as we didn't want to leave Coconuts). There is not much to do at the hotel which suited us fine as we are not exactly energetic on holiday, however the hotel arranged various trips to where ever you wanted to go with their drivers. You can also hire your own car. We stayed in both a tree house and a beach fale and would recommend the beach fale for the entire stay as they are wonderful. I would also recommend the meal deal as this was by far the best restaurant on the island. We will definately be back again when our daughter is old enough to make the 22 hour trip!

  • Liked — The Polynesian Experience
  • Disliked — Nothing
  • Tips/Secrets — This is not a beach paradise, more of a tropical garden paradise

I have just returned from a 10 day stay in a Treehouse room at Coconuts.Generally the resort was not a bad place to stay, but I believe there could be small improvements made that would certainly make it a more pleasant place to stay.
I was not expecting the marble floors and piped music of the Hilton, for from it, but what I do expect is a clean, functional room.
Unfortunately, this was not what we encountered. The covers over both beds had clearly not been washed in many months, there were blood stains all over the cover on the double bed.The cushions on the loungers on the balcony were also filthy so I could not lie on them.
The shower had only 2 temperatures, cold or hot and nowhere inbetween, and when I grew tired of the shower performance and decided to have a bath, I had to clean the bath before I could use it.
We also paid for the meal deal, and found the food average. Generally on the greasy side.Priority in the dining room is given to people who are not on meal deal. One evening we sat down at the same time as a family of 5, had not recieved a drink, ,let alone a menu, and the family were on their starter! They had left the restaurant having had a full 3 course meal before we got our starter!
The service from the staff is generally good, but the service in the restaurant can be very hit and miss and many people we met had this complaint.
There is also building work going on at the resort which we were not aware of until we arrived.
This is not a budget holiday and you certainly do not pay budget prices to stay here, and I cannot help feeling a little ripped off by Coconuts.
I would reccommend stay at Sinalei Resort next door, it has far superior accomodation and it cost less. You can always eat at Coconuts if you choose.

We spent our honeymoon (10 days) at coconuts and cannot properly describe the fabulous time we had there.

The weather was rainy, the sea quite rough most days and the humidity quite high, but who cares. We discovered the best diving shop at the neighbouring Sinalei resort and quickly made friends with the instructors and guides.

We strongly urge you to take advantage of Mikas 'meal deal'. For around US$60 per day you get all of your meals including packed picnic lunches that we actually looked forward to.

The rental jeeps are great value and allow you to venture further afield. If you are a snorkeller, drive over to Apia and visit Malolo deep - gotta be the best spot in the world for being amongst the fishtank varieties of tropical fish. Take your own fins, snorkel and mask and go at high tide. At low tide you have to walk a long way over shallow coral fighting a very strong tidal flow.

As mentioned, eat at coconuts. The food in Apia is very average and no cheaper.

Do the tourist things - village church on sunday, the fiafia night with fire dancing and some serious cocktails served in real coconuts.

This resort is what you thought the south pacific should be. It won't appeal to japanese and russian tourists, but to us down-to-earth folks looking for somewhere to relax and chill in exotic surroundings, this is THE place.

Having just returned from Coconuts I am missing the food already. A different and enjoyable place to stay, unfortunately we arrived in Samoa after they had had a week of tropical rain so the place looked a bit tired. After a few days of sun and having time to clean up the resort once again looked at its best. The food was beautiful and lazing in the pool drinking cocktails was just what we needed to relax. We were lucky that we have great weather but watch the sunburn as it sneaks up on you. Be careful as everything closes at night, from about 10.00pm to 8.00am there is no service at all, this was a bit strange when you arrive back late and find everything closed. Apart from this Coconuts is a truly lovely place to stay.
