“Best place I stayed in Samoa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2010

We stayed at the Savaiian Hotel as part of our Holiday in Samoa, the service was genuine and sincere and the staff went out of their way for us by giving directions to all the local attractions, and when we went shopping at the local village one of the staff made sure we were able to get transport back to the hotel.

When it came time for us to make our way back to Upolo on the ferry, management from the Savaiian hotel had contacted a friend who was able to give us a lift to the beach fales where we were next staying, these were half way across the Island of Upolo and they had definitely gone well out of their way for us.

Poi who is the manager of the hotel also works in the kitchen, he has a talent for food and this is reflected in the dishes he serves, the food is sourced locally and is fresh. I saw first hand his preparation of a large fresh mahi mahi fish and was impressed with his culinary skills. The Oka salad is highly recommended and the flavors and textures of fish coconut and citrus are well balanced by the fresh cucumber and tomato also used in this salad.

The rooms were well constructed and cleaned daily, these rooms offered ample outside seating a great place to be in the evening to admire the tropical vistas.

There has been some government related work on constructing a seawall which to me did not detract in any way from my enjoyment of the hotel or its grounds.

The Saviian hotel is a welcoming and friendly place to stay with good food and secure facilities.
If I were to be staying in Samoa again I would not hesitate to stay at this location and would recommend anyone to stay there.

We spent 6 nights at the Saviian and were sad to leave. This hotel is in a nice setting in a convenient location as you can easily catch the local buses to the market and close local beaches. If you wish to travel further the tours offered by the hotel or a hire car from the neighbouring property is recommended as the buses to more distant parts of the island are not as frequent and you can be left stranded. The local people are very polite and will move as soon as you enter to allow you to sit as a couple. It is an experience in itself traveling on the colourful buses. The 'fale' was clean and maintained every day. It is basic accommodation but is lockable, has walls and windows with insect mesh with a good shower (cold only in the fale's but you could hardly describe the water as cold in this climate) and flush toilet. We had no trouble with insects at any time during our stay. While there we looked at other resorts which were much dearer and felt the Savaiian offered the best value. The staff are friendly and attentive and always willing to help. The meals were nice and there is a reasonable variety and are good value compared to other resorts and restaurants. The waterfront along the bay has suffered from erosion and a sea wall is now almost complete. The works will benefit the resort when complete and I was advised a jetty is planned to improve access to the lagoon for kayaking and snorkelling. Thank you to Poi and the team, we were sad to leave.

Perhaps we were spoiled by the resort we stayed at immediately before checking in to the Savaiian, but we found the whole experience fell a little short of expectations. Staff were very friendly and helpful, but the room left a lot to be desired (jamming doors, no cutlery at all, no hot water) and I was surprised to be told by a staff member that snorkelling in front of the hotel was 'no good' - what happened to the 'waterfront coral reefs' described on their website? We really wanted to like the place a lot more, but left feeling very underwhelmed by the experience.

Apologies if you found your stay with us not as you expected, Unfortunately as you probably noticed our waterfront has a government project going on at the moment putting seawalls in places where erosion is occuring around the island. This is a public project to which we did not have much choicein and it is unfortunate that the works coincided with your stay. This is probably the reason one of our staff advised against going into the water as there are machines going back and forth working on the waterfront. If you stayed in an aircon room there should well have been hotwater and it a very rare instance to be without, occassionally our gas powered heaters run out and need replacing, our staff try to ensure these are checked on a regular basis.Had we known you had been without this would have been remedied quickly. our sincerest apologies for this.Cutlery apart from teacups/saucers and teaspoon which are in all the aircon rooms is supplied on demand as stated in the notices in the room cutlery cupboards. Kind regards

Our family of 5 stayed at the Saviian Hotel for 7 nights in early July. The hotel is situated about 15 minutes drive from the main wharf which we found handy as we caught the early ferry back to Upolu.

We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. We ate at the hotel most nights as there really isn't any restaurant on Savaii except for at the resorts. The food was good and prices very reasonable but there limited choice, no samoan cuisine and if you're not seated first at dinner or breakfast time, you could be in for a bit of a wait for your meal. Breakfast which is included with the stay was tropical fruit, toast and jam and hot drinks. The recently built resort restaurant is an open building on the waterfront looking out to the main island and is a great setting to enjoy a meal.

Our rooms were serviced daily. We stayed in the more expensive duplex rooms with air conditioning. The room was fairly basic with TV, but comfortable enough. The sliding door entry to the room gave us a similar view to the restaurant except about 30m from the water. There is a pool which was fairly basic again but the children used it each day and had great fun.

I definately recommend swimming with the turtles and the blowholes. Both were highlights on Savaii. The lava fields were also interesting. We tried driving to the Pulamei Mound but found that it was poorly maintained and poorly signed. You need a 4wd to get to the mound due to long grass and mud and once we arrived at the end of the trail, there's a 10 minute walk to the top of the mound which is completely covered with weeds and vines.

Overall we had a great stay on Savaii and at the Savaiian Hotel and it was a very relaxing 7 days. One final tip. Book your return ferry trip a couple of days before your return flight out of Samoa. The ferry service I have been told is not that reliable and services can be cancelled due to bad weather or there may not be enough bookings for a service.

Best value in the Salelologa area, 65 talas for a ‘fala’ ($26 US) which includes breakfast. The 'fala' rooms are large, clean and have private shower/toilet (though the bathrooms need a serious upgrade). Lonely Planet calls these rooms falas, but, not really. They are much more like a motel room. Ceiling fan and a wall plug (not found in falas) which was great for getting my electronic collection recharged. The property is very quiet, with well kept, large green lawns. There is a wonderful bay view from the restaurant and a pool (murky - it could use a new filter). The dining area is large and the food at dinner was good. The downside is that it is out of town, but it is worth the short trip if you want quiet, clean and value. Recommended

After searching and searching for a hotel in Savaii - when we came to Savaii Hotel - we were absolutely impressed with the spaciousness and privacy of its location. We were even more impressed with the Manager and staff. This hotel had a pool and it had such a relaxing atmosphere that it really felt like you were there on your own. It was the best time for us in Savaii and a highlight of our trip. The service was always professional and also laid back. We were looked after every day with smiles and the Manager, Poi, asking us how our day was which was part of the openness of the Samoan culture and genuine concern for us. We will definitely go back to Savaii Hotel. It is absolutely the best.

Highly recommended place to stay! So peaceful and Quiet, relaxing great view of the water outside the restaurant/bar area. Affordable fales to stay, great price for families. Great pool most enjoyable! was out of action for a day needed a clean but with Poi being so busy could have easily been missed. Poi is a terrific trusting guy!!! Excellent owner thank you for your great friendly hospitality!
He does take you on a tour which we were unfortunate not to have him take us but he did arrange for someone known to himself, to take us to the market, blowholes and waterfall. Would have been nice to go right around the island though.
Yes! 6am jazz classes do wake you up in the mornings which Poi is in negiotation to lower the volume or change the time, so good luck with that Poi. Maybe a few board games maybe be recommended.
Staff are wonderful and friendly and the bar staff makes the BEST cocktails!!! highly recommended!! calada is the best! food and drinks are reasonably priced. Even though orders are pre-ordered there is quite a long wait for your meals but once meals arrive, food is fantastic!
Overhead projector was out of action though, would have been great to watch the football worldcup final on big screen but least we got to watch on the smaller tv anyway :)
Stayed at Savaiian for 5 nights and was most enjoyable! Would highly recommend and let family and friends know about this place - Go stay there, you will love it!
