My family and I have just returned from 8 fantastic nights in Savaii Lagoon Resort. We have two kids aged 9 and almost 7 who absolutely loved every day there. We also took my father-in-law who stayed at the cabin next to ours. Once you are in Savaii it is lovely, but can be a drama getting here but don't let that put you off.
We arrived in Apia about 1am, and our hired car met us at the airport (Getz-a-rental) for about A$80 a day (pretty pricey). We then drove to the Airport Lodge which is Ok for a quick overnight stay - the website makes it look much nicer than it is - and got into our room by 2am, then we were booked on an 8am ferry to Savaii so not much sleep that night.
The car ferry over takes one and half hours and take travel sickness medication if you get the slightest bit queasy. The people are friendly and sharing. The drive to Savaii Lagoon resort takes about an hour from the port and then you are in paradise!
The room is spacious and well represented by the website so go and do the virtual tour online remembering it is a fisheye view so if you're not used to seeing this, things can appear further away than they actually are but we as a family of 4 had ample room.
We brought our own snorkelling equipment and flippers and reef shoes which I recommend you do too. The beach is lovely and peaceful and the water is warm and inviting. In low tide, head down in front of Le Lagoto next door as there is a big deep hole (about 2m deep) with lots of fish and coral to look at. We estimate there are at least 70 different species of fish and my husband and daughter swam with a turtle there.
The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms do get made up every day with clean towels and a sweep out but not always at the same time so it can sometimes happen late in the afternoon. The maintenance outside your rooms can happen quite early some days so bring earplugs if you want a sleep in.
You get a whole loaf of bread every day and butter and jam and which can become a little boring after a while so I would bring something else to put on toast like peanut butter or vegemite. The shop across the road is very basic so it is best to stop on your way to Savaii Lagoon at one of the bigger shops to stock up if you plan on doing any of your own cooking.
Be careful not to break anything in your room as you are required to pay for it (we broke a glass and had to pay about A$2.20 for it) as they bring everything from New Zealand.
We only drove the car every second day and spent every morning and afternoon snorkelling and spent a lot of time reading and snoozing. If you have kids and don't want them out in the sun all day, bring something for them to do - our kids have Nintendo DS's and they kept them busy. Our day trips included swimming with the turtles, the lava fields, the far west of the island and Mt Matuvanu (check out Dacraterman!).
The people in all of Samoa are very friendly and wave to you when you go past and there are pigs, dogs and cats everywhere.
We were sad to leave Savaii Lagoon as we then had to drive the one hour back to the port, then the car ferry, then overnight at the Airport Lodge again.
We would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to get away from it all and see how the Samoans live as you are really immersed in their culture.
