“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2012

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Savaii Lagoon Resort and enjoyed every minute of our stay there! Tony and Melissa are wonderful hosts and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. Everybody smiles at you and remembers your name, making you really feel at home there. Our bungalow was clean, bright and large, with a lovely view over the lagoon. The beach was very quiet and we enjoyed snorkeling and swimming, especially at high tide. We liked the tropical breakfast with plenty of different fruits and we had two delicious dinners at the resort's restaurant.
Three days were too short and we didn't want to leave! We hope we'll be able to spend a longer time there in the near future!

Room Tip: We stayed in bungalow number one, on the seafront. It had a separate bedroom, kitchen facilities and...

Savai'i Lagoon Resort was the perfect holiday for us. We stayed for four nights before departing to Upolu and it wasn't enough to enjoy the atmosphere that has been created here by Tony and Melissa and their staff. I have never meet hosts with such warmth and friendliness as Tony and Melissa. I was very impressed that they always used guests names when talking to them ( a small thing but such a personal touch) and how nothing was too much bother. The staff were friendly and enjoyed engaging in laughter and conversation with us. Their smiles were permanent while they worked in a friendly and efficient manner.
Dinner is an optional extra and other options include the resort next door or pizza across the road. The food at Savai'i Lagoon Resort was delicious, healthy and our personal preference. Breakfast was included and consisted on cereal, toast and a huge platter of tropical fruits. The fruit smoothies were also lovely. It was really nice not having to buy bottled water as the resort has filtered water coming out of the taps.
We had a garden bungalow which was only a 20 second walk to the beach. Our bungalow was spacious and clean. We had our own private bathroom which was unique in the fact it was half outside in a private courtyard. Our bungalow also contained a small but functional kitchen. There is no air conditioning but with mosquito nets on all the windows, a ceiling fan and the provided pedestal fan we found that we were perfectly comfortable to sleep. The bed was really comfortable too.
The beach at Savai'i Lagoon Resort is calm and beautiful. There are no waves as they break in the distance on the reef. The water is crystal clear and if you swim beyond the buoys the snorkelling is great with a wide variety of different corals and small fish. The beach is too shallow to swim in at low tide, however, many people happily lay in the shallows or used the large swimming hole that has been dug out for people to enjoy during low tide at the right hand end of the beach. Sun loungers, shade umbrellas and kayaks are available for guests to use. This is a very special place and I feel lucky to have experienced it. Thank you to all the staff, I will be recommending this amazing place to all of our friends.

We stayed in the resort for four nights, and quite simply it wasnt enough!. We enjoyed every minute of our time there.
Tony and Melissa (NZ managers) and their staff (samoan) look after you so well you fell as if you have stayed in your friends home.
Our room was comfortable, beautifully strewn with flowers when we arrived and overlooked the lagoon.
The restaurant/bar is great,it’s on the beach, just a few metres from the waters edge and WOW absolutely amazing sunsets - unforgettable!
The fruits and vegies are bought from locals only to help keep everyone going. This is the only place in Samoa with FILTERED WATER.the resort provides filtered water to the local village which is a wonderful way to help and sustain the local community.

The lagoon was so warm and crystal clear. There were kayaks, dingies to use for free and we spent hours in the water relaxing, sunbathing and snorkelling the reef.
The reef is amazing. As you swim slighlty further out to the coral gardens there is huge brain coral, plates of coral, many different types and many different fish to see.
You must do the plantation tour that June runs as its very informative and you’ll learn a lot about the different foods they eat, plants they use for medicinal purposes.
Every staff member had a permanent smile and a willingness to ensure that our stay was made as pleasurable as possible.

Room Tip: You get what you pay for, and every room is within 10 meters of the beach.

We had a fantastic stay at Savaii Lagoon Resort.
The accommodation looks very basic from the outside –bungalows that resemble concrete bunkers actually – however they were designed to be cyclone resistant, so there is a reason for them to look so ugly. The beach is beautiful, one of the best that we saw on Savaii.

We stayed in the waters edge bungalow (bungalow 8) which is definitely the pick of the bunch – it is set slightly apart and has a lovely outlook. It is more a studio as opposed to the other beachfront fales which have a separate bedroom.

Inside, the bungalows were basic but light, roomy and really comfortable. The bathroom as well was huge. There is no airconditioning however we were very comfortable simply using the fans provided and didn’t miss it.

The food was fantastic – breakfast was a fresh fruit smoothy, cereal and toast, dinner was a basic menu – one entrée and two mains to choose from. Most of the food was locally sourced and therefore in season, fresh and lovely. By contrast, the menu at Le Lagoto next door was disappointing – much larger but not nearly as fresh. While we were staying they were trialing a new lunch menu which should be fantastic.

The beach is gorgeous. At high tide there is good snorkeling strainght out from the resort. At low tide the water is so low you can’t swim, however 50m down the beach in front of Le Lagoto is a deep water hole that we used frequently.

The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Tony and Melissa were fantastic and really made our stay. The morning breakfast staff always made an effort to introduce themselves and have a chat which we appreciated too.

Getting to the resort was really easy – we took a taxi from the airport to the ferry terminal and caught the small ferry over. Although it was fairly packed it was easy to find a seat (we took both the small and large ferry’s) and everyone was polite and friendly. Once off the ferry we took a taxi for 70tala to the resort.

We hired a car from Le Lagoto for a day while we were there and drove around the island. The car was more expensive from there than from the main town, but much more convenient for us. The blowholes were definitely worth a visit and the north western side of the island was also beautiful. It was great to see the villages along the way as well. It’s a big island though and we got a bit tired of the driving. If you arrived on a morning ferry or were leaving on a late afternoon ferry, you may want to see the blowholes etc before heading up to the resort.

We also looked around Le-legoto which has air conditioned rooms, however they are quite dark and we felt given the price differential between the 2 places we would far rather stay here.

All in all, we would love to return here.

Room Tip: Water's Edge bungalow (no. 8)

Just back from a wonderful stay at the Savaii Lagoon Resort. Tony and Melissa are excellent hosts going far beyond to make your stay enjoyable. I celebrated my birthday and they made it so very special, with bouquets in the room, a birthday greeting written in the sand outside my room, and a special dinner of lobster and prawns. Nothing was too small for them to attend to.
It was also very lovely for Tony and Melissa to share their Sunday lunch with us guests so we could taste the home cooked local fare. I would heartily recommend visitors to come to this resort to experience first hand the hospitality and friendliness of the staff, Janice, Malu, Toto, June, Tui, Mossa, and others too numerous to mention.
Sam of Island Wheels is a great guide to see the island, as is June of JK Tours who does a plantation tour for guests and can be an island guide if you hire your own car.
A thoroughly enjoyable holiday made all the more special due to the managers, staff and beautiful locale.
Thanks Tony and Melissa for making my stay an experience to treasure!

Room Tip: No 8 fale is excellently positioned to take advantage of the beach and cool breezes

The Savaii Lagoon Resort is an excellent place to stay. Really nice units by a lovely beach, warm and generous hosts, friendly staff and a restaurant in a lovely beachside setting. Melissa and Tony looked after us so well - I can see why the other reviews rave about them - it is well deserved praise, The beach is very well cleaned and maintained by the Resort's team - and the waters are pristine. We stayed for 3 nights and would have loved to stay longer! We enjoyed our breakfasts and dinners in the restaurant - the standard of the food is very good indeed. We didn't need airconditioning - we slept very well (rooster from next door notwithstanding - it's what you expect to hear in Samoa!) From the Resort it's a nice walk down the road to other nearby villages (we went to a Sunday service at the Methodist church in Avao - the singing was literally heavenly), The locals made us feel most welcome and we enjoyed being part of the local scene. I would love to go back! Samoa is a great holiday destination.

Our experience at the Resort was very enjoyable. Tony and Melissa are the key to its success, and deserved No1 ranking.
A word of caution which does not detract from the excellent ranking we have given them. When booking through the NZ based website. Even though they take your credit card details and send you a confirmed booking reference number, you are still required to email back and confirm your confirmed booking!!. That process needs 'tweeking'. We arrived to find NZ Owners had not emailed the Resort with our booking. Fortunately they were not full and Tony and Melissa's damage control efforts were appreciated.

The studios are spacious, and tidy. They are not luxury 5 star, but are clean, and tidy. Hot water showers are available in the open air but private bathroom, but the pressure is not strong. There is no Air Con and we found the need to have the fans on to get air movement. Most studios are on the beach or within a few feet. The studios are close to each other so hopefully your neighbours are quiet.

The Resort purifies its own drinking water through an Ultra-Violet system and offers local villagers free water. WIFI is available but the signal is not strong so you will need to take your laptop down to the cafe to get on the Net.

The breakfast in the open air cafe is simple but adequate. We recommend the fruit ‘smoothie’. One of the best we have experienced

The cafe is right on the lovely beach. It makes a great picture at high tide. There are 3 well priced options for evening mains, without desserts. We dropped a hint in that direction for the future.

Being next door to Le Legota Resort gives other meal options. Note, one evening a week the Cafe is closed for evening meals.

Local staff members are friendly and helpful. Try and talk to them in their language and treat them as equals. A Store and Bakery lie across the road with the small Pizza place just out the gate.
Tony and Melissa are hands on Managers whose efforts cannot be faulted. They interact but don't smother guests. They are helpful if needed.

One final word of advice, if you decide to stay longer, pay for the extra nights through the NZ office, as the local $Tala rates charged when you calculate the exchange are higher than the NZ $ equivalent shown on their website. The tariffs must have been set when the NZ $ was much higher against the Tala.

Even though they are kiwis Tony is part Samoan and is now a Matai or Chief so is quite up on local culture and customs. We would love to stay again as long as Tony and Melissa are the Managers. Well done.

Thank you for an excellent review and for taking to time to write a lengthy one. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Savaii Lagoon resort. In order to clear up a misunderstanding regarding our booking system, hopefully this reply will explain.
Our “on line” booking system takes credit card details in a secure form to ensure that the booking is a legitimate one. It also gives the prospective guest a quote for the total cost of the accommodation and asks the prospective guest to confirm that they accept the quote so that the booking can be confirmed. A time space of four days is given to accept or not. Once the quote is accepted by clicking on the link provided, it is only then that the booking is confirmed, and only then is any payment taken.
We find that this is a “user friendly” and extremely fair system as it gives the prospective guest the opportunity of being able to arrange air fares and other accommodations to coincide with Savaii Lagoon accommodation before confirming acceptance, as well as the choice of not continuing with the booking if circumstances do not permit. We do not believe in a “no turning back” booking system.
As you did not confirm that you accepted the quote, your booking was held in abeyance with a courtesy reminder email being sent out to you by our reservations manager to ask if you wished to continue with your booking. Your booking request was a last minute request and by this time you had arrived at the resort. We appreciate that this misunderstanding obviously caused you some stress.
Thank you for choosing Savaii Lagoon resort.
