“Great food in a relaxing cafe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

We stepped in for coffee and reading, but found ourselves staying for lunch and conversation with the owners and other guests. This is a small place with limited staff, but they care about the product of good food and great coffee. The day we stopped in only one person was working so it may take a little longer than other restaurants, but we found it was worth it. Enjoy!

“Excellent food but expect some time for the service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013 via mobile

We went to this restaurant a few times during our stay in banos, we tried the breakfast, the sandwiches, the smoothies and the coffee! The food is excellent and so is the coffee. The sandwiches and bread at breakfast is especially exceptional because it is homemade and warm when served... Have not seen better bread in ecuador!!! However don't expect to go there and have a quick lunch because it is only the two owners working there so it takes a good 45 minutes before getting the food... But so what, we are in vacation! Also the lady can be interesting but I sometimes felt like she was eavesdropping on our conversations as she would come and comment on what we had said... And she has a lot to say if you show interest in her stories!

“Hit the spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

After months of eating the same Ecuadorean food, it was nice to find something different. I was so torn between the Lamb Kebab and the Ham and Cheese sandwich (Cheddar cheese? In Ecuador? Say it ain't so!). I ended up choosing the Ham and Cheese which was lovely with the guacamole-like mix on the top, and the bread was fresh and delicious. I got a mochachino while my friend got a berry smoothie. She was crazy about the smoothie which was thick and made of real fruit (something hard to find in Ecuador).

The prices were a bit inflated for Ecuador but normal for the United States. It just depends on how desperate you might be to get away from potatoes and more potatoes. Definitely worth a visit.

“Best Coffee in Ecuador!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013 via mobile

Please disregard all reviews that give this cafe less than 5 stars... These people obviously don't know good coffee/service.

The coffee is ground to order...it takes a few minutes because the ingredients are fresh. In the meantime, enjoy the warm ambiance or talk to the owner (she has an incredible story).

Friendly service, fresh clean ingredients, lovely atmosphere. I have about 4 cups of coffee a day, you will not find a better cup in Ecuador.

If I could give this cafe 6 stars, I would.

“Fresh ground coffee and high quality natural foods.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

Cafe Ali Cumba is located just off the main square in Banos ( Luis Martinez y November 12 ) in a lovely old mansion. Hardwood floors and free WiFi. The owner is from Denmark and takes pride in her food quality and so it's not dirt cheap, you get what you are paying for. A dollar or so more delivers natural food quality similar to what you might get in the States or Europe. Each cup of coffee is freshly ground and her smoothies are 100% pure fruit except for the ones with yoghurt or milk. It is a great menu alternative to the local food offerings. She makes her own wheat bread to compliment the breakfast offerings. Great luncheon sandwiches with fresh meats and veggies. There is a Tapas menu featuring the likes of hummus, chicken, lamb skewers, fried prawns and Swedish meatballs served with a baguette. Oh yeah if you are truly homesick you can get Nachos as well. I just really liked hanging in an old estate house drinking fresh brewed coffee, good coffee on my trip was difficult to come by, I would start there.
