“excellent stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

We were so happy to end up here after many hours on planes/airports. Taxis from the airport cost about 50 pesos. Upon arrival the receptionist was super nice and helpful, and check-in was a breeze. She knew we must be tired from a long flight and showed us to our room immediately. She also informed me that our tour for tomorrow called to say that they're closed for the day and to pay for the tour tomorrow morning at the pier, nice! Later on I asked for some hot water for a cup of tea and she was very willing to boil some for me. This hotel is just 1 street up from the main street and there you can find everything you need. We arrived on Christmas day and had no problems finding a place to eat dinner :) the hotel has heated floors in the main lobby/dining area (so nice) and their front door is locked at all times, which made it extra secure. Someone is at the front desk and you just look in and they'll unlock the front door for you. Breakfast includes cereal, yogurt, bread, pastries, milk/coffee/tea. We stayed 3 nights and happy with everything. It is really clean and comfortable, thank you so much! We will be back in a few years for the Antarctica cruise :D

Things we did while in Ushuaia:

Penguin tour with Pira Tours - excellent
Short hike up to Martial Glacier just above town - great views of Ushuaia and Beagle Channel

Hiking in Tierra del Fuego - Coastal Trail and Lago Roca to Chile and back. We walked from Argentina to Chile :)

Very well located, friendly and helpful staff for a very resoanable price for Ushuaia standarts.

The wifi and tv works perfectly. The only downside would be the breafeast... I believe you could have more options ( like eggs or something like this..) since they have a kitchen and a limited number of guests ( I guess they have like 4-5 rooms)...

Would stay there again.

The hotel was definitely our best in our Argentinian trip (stayed in Trelew, Iguazu, and Buenos Aires, El Calafate). First, great service - the hotel's wife was exceptionally helpful, going out of her way to figure out which tour company we had booked our Beagle cruise with, and then helping us figure out our dinner plans. The room itself was very clean and comfortable (nice fluffy pillows!) and warm (actually, very warm if you're worried about that and it was quite cold during our stay here). Stayed in a triple (room 5) - the twin was a little small (although i think that's typical of South America), but the queen size bed was comfortably sized. Previous reviewers complained about noise, but there's a corridor you have to enter to get to the rooms and there's a sign that says to be quiet in this section and we didn't have any noise problems.

Our room had a safe, small TV, and enough space for our luggage. The corridor previously mentioned has a very nice view of the Beagle canal as well (also there's a sitting area there).

One computer with internet in the main area of the lobby/breakfast. Good free wifi in the rooms.

Breakfast was simple - cereal, fruit, croissants, coffee, tea, toast, yogurt. Converts into a bar later, but didn't see anyone using it.

Location: about 5 blocks from the port and a couple from San Martin, the main strip that is parallel to Maipu (street overlooking the water). It is uphill, but nothing too painful at all.

Very good value - paid $118/night or 650 pesos (very good exchange rate of 5.5 for USD)

(rest of this review is about our time in Ushuaia - stop reading here if you're only interested in the hotel)
Restaurants: about a block and a half away from Maria Lola (good but fancy seafood restaurant) and a block away from an Irish pub (try the local beer)

Tours: the owners have a full list of tours available, but if you're going during a popular time it might be smart to book some stuff early (ie we wanted to do the Penguin walking tour with Pira tours, but it was full since they can only take about 20 people each trip - the cruise though that went to the Penguin island was almost just as good though - saw the 1 king penguin on the island!). Lots of sort of last minute cruises to Antartica (10 and 20 days for 4k and 8k USD), as Antartica is about 1000 km away. Also heard there are some helicopter tours as well. We did the Beagle cruise (short and long one since we couldn't do the penguin walking tour - the difference is that during the short one, which is 2.5 hours you walk on Bridges island, which was quite nice, and the long one goes to the penguin island - literally, it goes right on shore). Then did a tour of Tierra del Fuego, which was nice - half day tour (gets back around 1:30 PM). Our last day we did a tour of the Esondido and Fagano lakes.... would not recommend. Views were ok, but our guide only spoke Spanish (booked through Travel Lab) and the crowd leaned towards the older. Best part of it was the restaurant they took us too which had an unlimited salad buffet and lamb.

Beautiful town - be prepared for varied weather and stay at Hotel Austral!

The location was perfect, close enough to the bus station, easy walking to everything in town. Friendly and knowledgeable receptionists. The room was spacious with a comfortable bed, cozy comforter, plenty of places to put things and good wifi. The dining area was pleasant and the breakfast plentiful. They even had some breakfast items available a little earlier than scheduled which was very helpful as we left on excursions rather early. We were very glad were persisted on getting a room here when one was not available when we first tried to book.

Ushuaia is not really famous for the quality of their hotels. Nevertheless the quality of this stay was really good. I had a big, clean room with all necessary stuff that is needed. Breakfast and Services (Wireless etc.) were quite good.

Pluspoint for the helpful staff - they really tried to make me feel home.

We were very happy with our choice of the Hotel Austral. Its a very friendly, family-run hotel. The room was large and clean with a good, comfortable bed. The daily breakfast was great and the owners were very helpful in providing advice as well as making reservations at restaurants in the city. I'd definitely recommend it.

A simple, no-frills place. It may seem overpriced, but so are all hotels in Ushuaia. The weak points are the breakfast and the wall’s poor acoustic insulation – which was not a big problem, since the place is not particularly noisy. Provided the minimum comforts I need in a ski trip: a good shower, decent heating and a comfortable bed. The room I stayed in was quite spacious, equipped with a safe and a flat-screen TV. A family-run business, with a very solicitous staff. If you are not looking for a fancy hotel, Austral is for sure a good choice.
