“Penguins, dolphins, seabirds and awesome scenery!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

Penguins, dolphins, seabirds and awesome scenery. All on a sunny day in February. We took the catamaran from Ushuaia to the penguin rookery - a 6 hour boat ride and it was a terrific experience. The blue sky, glacier ridged mountains, and ever changing scenery made for a great day. The high light was the boat beaching itself among thousands of penguins.

“A nice sail if weather permits”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

It was something to do by a nice afternoon. The sail is pleasant and you get to see sealions and cormorant birds and the lighthouse.

“Looking at history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

The straight, wide Beagle Channel is spectacular from any angle, whether you are sailing toward Ushuaia from east or west, or sitting in a water-front restaurant enjoying the view east. Tours to islands in the channel that are home to thousands of birds and sea lions are one of the attractions.

“Penguins and sea lions!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013 via mobile

Absolutely fantastic, the highlight of my trip. I took a catamaran with El Rumbo Sur which was an all day trip to include the Hamberton ranch. The return was by bus and took an hour.

Make sure you choose a trip which includes the penguin colony.

So what happens:

You usually get picked up from your hotel, else the boat leaves from the tourist pier. In addition to your excursion cost, you will have to pay ten peso to the port so worth having this handy as you pass through.

The boat is spacious and comfortable, on my trip it was not crowded, plenty of space to stretch out.

The boat has a small bar and gift shop. They serve hot drinks, alcohol, sandwiches and cake.

You must stay inside during cast off/docking, but other than that you can be outside. There are two options, the edge of the catamaran or the upper deck.

First stop is the cormarants, from a distance they look like penguins but they are birds!

Then the sea lions, oh my goodness you just cannot comprehend the noise they make and the size of the males compared to the females! Watch out for the males "fighting" each other. You get really close so some great photo opps.

Then it is another 80 minutes to reach the penguins. This was the highlight for me. There were two types that I saw, Magellanic and gentoo. You get plenty of time to watch them and take photos.

Then it was off to the ranch, the first part focuses on the sheep business and Thomas Bridges, the man that built it and the first European to settle in Tierra del Fuego. Then lunch, very tasty, I had soup, there was a meat stew option too. The wine was good.

Then the museum tour. Actually more of a scientific research centre, you can watch them scraping the flesh from putrified animals to obtain the bones for scientific research, yum!

Then the bus back. Thoroughly enjoyable day.
