“Favorite meal of the trip...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

Seafood specials that were out of this week. Attentive and generous service. Romantic setting. It was by far our favorite meal of the 10-day trip.

“One of Ushuaia's Best Restaurants”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

I think Ushuaia is a pretty touristy place and with that usually comes lackluster food but this place does a great job of rounding out the Ushuaia experience. We sought it out because of other TripAdvisor reviews. We walked in after getting back from our penguin tour with PiraTour. It was a little funny that as soon as we walked in they asked us if we had a reservation in a way that made us unsure if we were going to be accepted (this was on a Monday night, around 8:30pm, and there were plenty of tables open) but it all worked out just fine and they gave us our choice of tables.

We sat down, they took our jackets, and we dove into the menu. It's a pretty easy menu - probably 80% of it was their wine list. We started off with the King Crab & Spinach soup (it was great) and a ceviche special made of a local deep water fish that came with a spanish, tabasco sauce and had the perfect amount of kick (we could've each eaten a giant bowl of it). To drink we got a bottle of the Rutini 2009 Malbec which almost surprised me it was so good. For the main we got the Lomo de George and the Merluza Negra with a cream sauce and julienned carrots. It was all great. Their bread was also served with this great spinach butter that we couldn't get enough of. To finish everything off, we enjoyed a couple of the Illy Hyper Double Coffees with the 2 crepes that they offered and it was great (the crepe w/ dulce de leche was my favorite).

Overall the food was pretty darn great!

Even with a slightly weird feeling when we first walked in everything warmed up quite quickly - from the chef explaining the menu to the other waiters being very appropriately attentive and a final visit from the chef to ask how everything worked out (he likes it when you go for the sea food), the whole experience finished off quite nicely. It was a really enjoyable meal.

“Very nice restaurant, sea bass is amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

This is arguably one of the best restaurants, if not the best, in Ushuaia. Located on a hill with great view of the twon and harbor.

My wife and I had their natural king crab and king crab in saffron sauce as appetizers, both were good. Personally, I like king crab in its natural, unaltered taste. So as long as it is fresh, you can have good natural kingcrab in other restaurants in Ushuaia also. A friend tried ceviche scallop which was outstanding, and it is a special dish not found in other restaurants.

For entry, we had sea bass in sage and lemon and in papillote. What they called sea bass here is basically Chilean sea bass (or patagonia toothfish, or black hake). Both were outstanding, the fillet was thick and juicy, cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend these two dishes.

For desert we had lemon ice cream in champagne sauce and expresso to finish it off. A great evening.

“More than diner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013

Recommended by a local, we dined at Kaupe. The food as well as the service was of excellent quality. The waiter was very helpful by choosing the right wine (what was delicious). Although it isn’t cheap, the great view on de Beagle canal, the ambiance en the many details (like the name in the napkin rings, napkins, table clothing, dishes, glasses etc.) makes it more than just diner! Highly recommended!

“Tasting menu well-worthwhile”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

Eleven of ate here on the recommendation of a local businesswomen and the recommendation was fulfilled. The restaurant is fairly intimate and we sat as a seven and a four, which worked out as the seven wanted the taster menu at 400 pesos (including wines) whilst the other four went a la carte. The food was very good. The owner and staff were friendly and attentive all evening. The taster menu is well worth trying if the whole table wants it.
