“Eolo - Fabulous Experience in Patagonia”

Eolo - Patagonia"s Spirit

My husband and I had the good fortune to stay at Eolo for three nights as part of our March 2007 honeymoon to Argentina and it was by far the best experience of our trip. The staff are wonderful - extremely friendly, informative, and very helpful. They took care of anything from suggesting a tea choice to checking us in to our next flight. The rooms are beautifully appointed and quite large with picture windows boasting incredible views of the gorgeous Patagonian landscape.

Eolo provides your transportation to and from the airport and any activities you chose to do, as long as you don't mind a larger tour bus (if not they do offer private van services). We had been concerned about the quality of the dining based on previous reviews, but we found the food to be very good.

Three nights was the right amount of time for us to stay - 2 days of excursions and one day at the lodge. It is expensive, but was worth every penny in our opinion.

The Eolo is a gorgeous lodge isolated from anything other than the plains of Patagonia. Though isolated, it is 20 minutes from Calafate and 35 minutes from the Perito Moreno Glacier. The accomodations are spectacular and the meals excellent. The young staff who attend to you are remarkable for having perfected the art of unintrusive but attentive service at such a young age. They are happy to arrange for you anything your heart might desire while at the lodge. Our three weeks in Argentina were spent in top-end accomodations. The Eolo was easily the highlight.

We have just returned from a fabulous 4 night break at Eolo. Other reviewers have described the amazing hotel and its location. We loved the warm hospitality from all the staff. We felt like privileged house guests.
We would recommend 4 nights to really appreciate the hotel and the surroundings. The main sights are the nearby glaciers. We booked the Big Ice day trip and the Estancia Christina day trip. Both were quite pricy but good value. Big Ice is a strenuous 6 hour hike onto the Perito Mereno glacier (4 hours on the glacier itself) and gives a great sense of achievement. The Estancia Christina trip includes a lake trip, a trip to the Uppsala glacier, then the choice of a walk through rock landscapes or a Patagonian barbeque. (Both excellent choices.)
After 2 full days we spent one day walking to the summit of a small mountain behind the hotel. A delicious packed lunch and a friendly dog "guide" made a great day out.
Although Eolo is remote, we did not need our own transport. The hotel van met the day trip buses and the transfers to the airport were included in our package.

I had a very nice 4 night stay at Eolo in January, 2007. I recommend the hotel.

Eolo is situated on a rise at the foot of Cerro Frias, about 12 miles from El Calafate and on the road to the Perito Moreno Glacier. It has terrific views to the south, west and east – one can see Estancias Anita and Alta Vista about 12 to 15 miles away across the valley to the south, the Brazo Rico of Lago Argentino to the west and the main body of Lago Argentino to the east. On a clear day, the Cordillera del Paine in Chile is visible. The website does a good job of giving a sense of the vistas and isolation of the property.

I found the service to be very good. The reception desk staff were all solicitous and gracious – and went out of their way to offer refreshments, answers to questions and assistance. Housekeeping – which came for turn down each night while we were at dinner – surprised me by effectively re-cleaning our bathroom each evening (we took showers before dinner). The service at dinner was prompt and pleasant.

The food was also very good (although my traveling companion thought that the “large pieces of meat” he ordered were not as good as he expected, I ordered more international dishes – a stuffed chicken leg one night, a hare confit another, a roulade of lamb on a third and ravioli stuffed with black hake with prawns and a citrus butter sauce on the fourth – and was very pleased with the results). Although wine is not included in the price, I found that Eolo had selected a very fine collection of what I believe to be boutique Argentine wineries to stock their wine cellar, and so we got to try some of the most interesting wines of my 45 day trip while in residence (and, anyway, wine in Argentina is cheap enough that the added cost was not significant).

Our room was a very large corner room – the largest room I had during my trip. The views to the southwest and southeast were transfixing. The facility is brand new, and everything is in good repair.

The only caution I have is that if one does not have a car, the only way to go to many outside activities such as visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier, exploring the Upsala Glacier and Estancia Cristina and the like is through the hotel’s van service (they use contractors from El Calafate). These are not cheap (although they were far better than the van service used by Helsingfors, where I stayed immediately before Eolo). They are likely also more convenient than the bus trips from El Calafate itself – the van takes you, waits for you, and will stop wherever you would like for pictures, etc.). From Eolo itself one can do mountain biking, hiking (including a climb of Cerro Frias – very nice views on top) and horseback riding. All of the “off property” excursions are extra – so that the total cost of Eolo ended up being, in our case, about 25% more than the room/board rate. That said, I was glad we did the off property excursions, and I’m willing to bet that the cost of a rental vehicle would have been more than the cost of using Eolo’s van services.

I found Eolo to be a very nice stay. I was glad I selected it, and would recommend it to discerning travelers.

Three friends had a most marvellous pampered 4 days at this lodge set in magnificent Patagonia. The views were wonderful and ever changing esp over the mountains. The staff were relaxed yet attentive, always friendly and helpful, even the dogs were friendly and well behaved and accompanied us on our walks. The cuisine using local flavours was excellent and all meals and snacks were tasty , well presented and enjoyed. Highly recommended and well worth the cost.
