Owner description: The Upsala Glacier is one of the largest in Los Glaciares National Park. To sail through the Argentino Lake among icebergs and mountains and then visit Estancia Cristina is an interesting combination of nature, adventure, history, and pleasure. This full day program offers alternatives such as those who prefer a quite day of touring and history as well as those who look forward to activities with adventure like trekking and riding a four wheel drive. The excursions that are surrounded by the Andes mountains, glaciers and Argentino Lake leads us to get in touch with a natural, unique, remote environment, with culture and lifestyle of the pioneers and the interesting relationship of them with famous explorers of past century.

“Day trip to Uppsala Glacier and Estancia Cristina”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2013

A long day but well organised with transfers from hotel to the boat, good guides describing the glacier and then at the Estancia an interesting visit to the museum, old farm buildings and then a 4 x 4 tour to the top of the glacier. We couldnt believe how cold the wind was blowing off the glacier and we had been warned and the sun was shining, remember how far south you are! Having driven ourselves to the Perito Merino glacier the day before - this was a much better day out! We took a picnic but bought hot soup at the Estancia and i think i would recommend having lunch there rather than picnics....

“A perfect well balanced day”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2013

But we were very lucky.. they say that there are only 20 perfect days in the year for blue skies and no wind.... and we hit one of these days!

The boat journey was instructive and lots to see, complimentary coffee and croissants as much as you can take, a great bumpy ride on a 4 x 4 to the top of the world to see a magnificent view.. lakes, mountains, snow and ice. Very helpful and informative guides. As someone else mentioned, the museum trip was a bit long-winded but interesting history. A great day out.

“Maravilloso Cañadón de los Fósiles”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

We chose the excursion Cañadón de los Fósiles ("Glaciar Upsala + Ea. Cristina + 4X4 Mirador Upsala + Trekking Cañadón de los Fósiles) because I like geology and I wanted to see the rocks and the fossils (Belemnites and Ammonites) of this area. It was really wonderful : a lot of Belemnites (part of it names rostrum), a rocky outcrop with huge Ammonites ; the trekking in the colored (yellow, grey, red, orange) rocks was amazing ; we also saw pyrite or chalcopyrite on the way! The wind was very strong at the beginning of the trek just after 4X4 when we went to the Glaciar Upsala viewpoint, so it is really necessary to have good clothes and to be careful with our equipment (you could lose your sunglasses or your hat because of the wind!).

“The sight of glaciers is proof of the true hand of God”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2013

The boat ride coming up close to the glaciers, icebergs was wonderful. When you got off the boat we took a 4x4 tour to visit the other side of the glacier - fantastic.
Moreover, after lunch visit local museum. It was interesting, but too long for the content.
Despite being an ecological reserve, could have chemical toilets near the glaciers.

“Patagonia in a nutshell, and a day full of firsts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2013

If you had time to do just one thing in El Calafate (and there´s a lot to choose from) I might say choose this.

The tours pick you up early morning and you´re driven to the lake from where the boat takes you north. The boat ride is pretty awesome in and of itself. On the day we went it was very windy and during some parts of the ride, too choppy to be outside. However once we were closer to the Upsala glacier channel, the wind is much milder and we had the most amazing close encounters with icebergs. Some enormous, larger than the boat, others chiselled into bizarre and sensuous shapes, all glowing an unnatural blue. Truly special. We went almost to the edge of the Upsala glacier itself before turning round and making for the Estancia Cristina.

On the way they offer hot coffee and sugary croissants, perfect to brace the winds. The boat wasn´t too crowded either.

The Estancia itself is interesting, if a bit pallid in comparison to its spectacular natural surroundings. The story of the family that found the Estancia is interesting though. There is a cafeteria where food is provided, but it has to be pre ordered. A lot of people simply ordered a drink and ate packed lunches.

After lunch we set out on a 4x4 toward Upsala. On the way the mountain views are picture postcard perfect. Our tour guide was super knowledgeable and friendly, very keen to answer questions, which we fired a lot of. There is a pit stop to take photos at an achingly beautiful viewpoint. The last strecth brings you to some unnaturally polished valleys (we later found out they were under 100 ft of ice less than 150 years ago). Here we disembarked and walk towards the cliff edge where our jaws dropped.

The view suddenly openned out in a 270 degree pamorama stretched out as far as the horizon with sweeping views of Upsala and two tributary glaciers. The cloud shrouded mountains in the background, the brilliant sunshine, the unearthly beauty of the white glaciers, the brilliant blue glacial waterways and most of all the howling, unstopping wind all gave it a surreal, end of the earth quality that I´ll find impossible to forget. Really, if I didn´t know what I wanted to find in Patagonia before I arrived, I certainly did then.

Soon it was time to go but not before a very interesting talk on the rapidly retreating Upsala glacier and it´s geological reaons.

If it´s a windy day, make sure you pack a tough wind stopper, and if it´s sunny, lots of sunscreen and a sturdy pair of sunglasses. Good boots will help too.

We then made our way back to the boat for a shorter ride straight to where the buses originally dropped us off.

All in all, a day very well spent. Highly recommended.
