pluses 1st:
we had cabin 4--the only 2 storeyed secluded cabin---kitchen, dining, bath downstairs and spacious bedroom with balcony overlooking the lago upstairs... loads of space

gas stove

they held our bags when we went to chalten taking the 8am bus and returned the next day by the 6 pm, arriving at the hotel after 9.30pm. we had of course informed them of our timings and they settled the bill at one go when we left after our 2nd stay

we get picked up around 7.40 as the last stop for all tours and get dropped off 1st--- guys in centro hotels have to sit around in the bus from 7am

minuses

floor was cold downstairs-- no small rugs/footmats

breakfast was bad---juice from concentrate, 4 small slices of bread, our cheese was forgotten on 2 days--milk was forgotten on one day and left out with the radiator blasting on another...
we told them we are vegetarians and asked for fresh fruit instead of ham... it was forgotten one day and on 2 days there was rotten fruit

they quoted awful exchange for USD in their emails when they offered to book tours--so on the day we arrived, we took care of our airport transfer and walked to the centro and booked tours on our own... proved great as we got 8USD exchange for our todo glaciares tour and chalten bus trip

we wanted to confirm there were buses from centro to go to perito moreno glacier and do the 1 hour boating and the board walk at our pace... they said buses from centro are not reliable and suggested for 290pesos, they will arrange a tour that included a ranch trip and the glacier. the return trip for the bus would cost 200pesos in comparison but of course the ranch tour included pickup from hotel. the ranch trip took us to the glacier only by 11.45 and asked us to be at the pickup point by 2 for the boating or 3 if we wanted to just go back... we could hardly see even half the yellow trail by 2, so we decided to just go on the board walk... by 3, we only completed the yellow and a little bit of the red and managed to wangle a return ticket on the caltur bus back at 7pm for 100peso pp... so we stayed back without hurrying back at 3 per the tour plan... we had a glorious day with great weather and the tour would have dumped us back in hotel before 4... wasting the better part of the evening... we missed the 1 hr boat trip also bec the last ride was at 2... felt the hotel guy had purposely misled us though we had clearly told him our priority was to spend as much time as possible at our own pace on the glacier park... we did manage to do the forest trail and the whole coastal trail when we got the ride back with caltur---

they refused exchange when we did not buy any tour with them but money appeared when we booked---it was at 7.50 in Dec 1st week--other places gave us 8, our bariloche hotel gave 81/2 right after our calafate stay

we spent 40/45 pesos for cab to centro as the walk back throws dust in the face as we come nearer the hotel... the stray dogs are not a welcome feature on the dusty roads

My family and in-laws stayed at Solares Del Sur for a week and had a great experience. Highly recommended for families with kids. They are a bit out of town, not really walkable if the weather is poor. The staff was great and very accommodating. They helped set up several tours, taxis, dinners and transport to the airport. Breakfast is decent and good views of the lake. The restaurant that is part of the hotel was a little disappointing since the night we tried it they seemed to be out of a lot of stuff.

Room Tip: All the rooms are the same size, just different arrangements

We had a very nice time and the staff is very welcoming, helpful and cheerful. The cabañas are very cozy and nice.
They can book all kind of trips for you (even in advance, prio to your stay, which we recommend for some as we could not do the mini-ice-trekking of Perito Moreno because we left it too late), and they do go out of their way to help you out with different bookings.
They provide packed lunch for your day-trips too.
It's a little out from El Calafate "downtown" and if you intend taking advance of the on-site restaurant after a day-trip, I recommend you book in advance because it's really small. The view from the restaurant is amazing, but we could not try it because it was full when we wanted to. It's very quite.

Solares de Sur is beatiful place in a amazing country.
Argentine lake view and the tours (which can be booked in the same hotel) are imcomparables.
The attention of all the staff are very friendly, from the girls cleaning to the receptionists. Freddy, the maintenance man is a cool guy!
I have no words to describe QUIDU restaurant, located inside the hotel. Fernanda is wonderful, the food is very tasty and delicious wines.
Abrazo grande for Marcos, Sergio and Nacho

Room Tip: The aparts 5 is the best! when i came back again to Solares de sur i´ll choose de the same room.

We had a great experience at Solares del Sur in El Calafate! We stayed in Cabin #2 with an amazing view of Lago Argentino right from our front window. The cabin was very spacious with a large main area with dining table and double beds, and a separate bedroom with a double bed. The bathroom was luxurious and large enough. The highlight was the breakfast, which they thoughtfully deliver the night before. They keep all the refrigerated ingredients in the fridge (milk, juice, jam, dulce de leche, meat/cheese if provided that day) and everything else (bread, pastries, cornflakes) outside. We made coffee fresh in the morning using the coffee press, which was perfect for us coffee lovers. The hotel offers great service, including pre-booking our glacier minitrekking excursion and airport transfer. It was nice not to worry about booking the excursions, and I definitely recommend pre-booking if you are going during high season. We talked to some travelers who tried booking one day before in late December and it was sold out. Ignacio at the front desk was very helpful with advice on activities around El Calafate. We walked to town several times, once with our packs, and it took about 20-30 minutes depending on how many stops we made to take pictures of the beautiful lake! We made lunch with supplies from the grocery store, and took that with us for the glacier excursion. It was nice to come back and eat a great meal at the Quidu resturant after a long day. Overall I highly recommend Solares del Sur, it was one of our most pleasurable experiences in Patagonia!

I loved this little hotel. It is a fair distance outside of town- we walked and it took 30-45 minutes. It's up on a hill a bit with a nice view out over the lake. But there are only about 8 cabins and they feel very well attended to and are very comfortable. It had the feel of a summer cabin or a ski lodge. Our cabin was two floors with a kitchen area and dining room table and bathroom downstairs, and two bedrooms upstairs. We only stayed for one night, but the two people at the front desk that we met were very friendly and helpful. We did not eat in the restaurant but it looked very nice.

I loved the breakfast, which was a variety of items on a day all given to you the night before so you can plan your own morning. Our coffee maker did not work, which would a major complaint of my friend. I would certainly stay here again.

Pluses-
The staff's recommendations: The staff will set up any excursions you want to do. We did both minitrekking and trail riding, both set up by the staff at Solares Del Sur, and it went smoothly. It was nice to have someone to get everything lined up for us. The trail ride we were set up on, via recommendation, was one of the highlights of the trip.
A good value: For the price, we had a two-bedroom apartment with a dining area, kitchen, and bathroom on first floor and two bedrooms on the second floor.
The view: Beautiful view of Lago Argentino. The grounds are also beautifully landscaped with roses everywhere. Solares del Sur is outside of town but that worked fine for us as we had all day excursions planned. There isn't much to do in town--mostly a tourist trap.

Minuses-
The breakfast/lunch box: The breakfast is very average, with breads and cereals and some ham and cheese. The first night we got in, the ham and cheese and milk had been sitting out for an unknown amount of time. We put the perishable items in the fridge but the milk was spoiled in the morning. The lunch box is expensive and average-- if you have time go into town and make your own.
Noise: The back bedroom was right on the parking lot and was very noisy the first night, but better the second night. The walls are thin.
A couple other issues: When we arrived late at night, we were exhausted and ready to go to bed. The beds in one of the bedrooms had no sheets. We called and a bit later the sheets were delivered, and we made the bed ourselves and went to sleep. The pillowcase did not fit the pillow and was never replaced. Small issue, but takes away from the overall experience.
The hotel also tried to convert our rate from dollars to pesos using their own exchange rate, not the official exchange rate. This is not cool. Once we pointed that out, we paid using the official exchange rate. So travelers beware-- hotels should not be converting rates from dollars to pesos at an exchange rate of their choosing.
