“Good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2010

The location is a 15 minute walk into town. Our (double with shower) was simple, clean and comfortable. The staff are very helpful and pleasant and they do speak decent English . The WiFi worked very well in the lobby and dining room and sporadically in the bedroom with a weak signal. The breakfasts were basic so could be missed especially as there is a very good coffee shop just a block away. The machines in the laundry were not working when we were there but they were able to arrange excellent laundry service. Although we did not do a tour with the hostel, they arrange what seems to be well priced tours to the local attractions. This hostel is comfortable and welcoming.

I stayed for a total of two nights in the Hostel Del Glacier, one night before and one night after a trek in the Patagonian Andes. I really liked staying there. The reception staff were really helpful and responsive to my needs, and the reception are was well laid out, with lots of information about tours and trips in the area. The rooms were a good size, and comfortable (although we did not have hot water on the first morning). There is a small cafe on site that serves breakfast, as well as food and drink after about 5pm (it appeared to be closed for most of the day). The main town of El Calafate is about ten minutes walk. I would definitely recommend this hostel, or its sister hostel down the road, if you are backpacking or touring in the area, especially as they are so well set up to provide information and assistance for tour groups and individual travelers.

At $68 USD for a double Superior room, this hostel was a great value. It's a bit of a walk into town (10-15 minutes), but the room was clean and comfortable and the staff was very helpful.
Unless you're really pressed for time, you might take a miss on the rather basic breakfast that is not included in the price of the room.

This hostel was clean and comfortable. The room was more than you might expect for the term "hostel". I think nice hotel room would be a better desciption. Breakfast included. We stayed in hostels throughout our trip and this was one of the pricier ones - but well worth the money.
We booked our trip to the Glaciar through the hostel and were not disappointed - it's amazing!

Hostel Del Glaciar Los Pineros did not honor our reservation. They had no record of it and shurgged their shoulders when we showed them the confirmation email.
1. Staff is the rudest, most unhelpful staff I have ever encountered at a hostel. They did nothing to try to rectify the reservation problem and acted as if we were nuisance because they did not have the room we reserved months in advance.
2. You must leave your key when going out. Upon returning to the hostel we usually had to wait 15-20min to get our key back. It was infuriating.
3. Location is terrible!! The hostel is a 15min walk outside of town, completely isolated. No shops, no restuarants. Only a rather unsafe appearing neighborhood.
4. They do offer excursions through the hostel. We ended up making all of our excursion reservations at local tourist companies because the hostel does not accept credit card. The price is the same regardless of what company you choose.
5. Overall no atmosphere. A lot of the fun of staying hostels is meeting other travelers. Hanging out. There is no comfortable place to do that here. In the 4 days we stayed here the only interaction we had with other people was in passing in the lobby area.

We liked the hostal. Friendly staff, good excursions, OK double rooms with bathroom, their own little restaurant to have meals (didn't try) or to be used as a bar at night. Nice surroundings, just a bit outside of the town. You had to walk about 10,15 minutes to town / busstation, and there were no shops around. But that's no problem if you know...

It was not that far (5 min.) from the best restaurant in town, La Tablita. That really was the best (and most!!) meat we ate in the whole of Argentina!! Especially try the Patagonian Lamb.
