“Good view, friendly staff (one), needs some update”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

As many reviewers said, this hotel is located on a hill, away from the downtown area. It has good view of Lake Argentina. One can walk on the beach all the way to Laguna Nimez Reserve. From the beach you have access to a gate which brings you to the trail circling the laguna. To walk to the downtown it is faster taking the paved road, about 30 min walk. When we were there, hotel shuttle would take you to downtown but not bring you back. Your have to either walk back or take a taxi.

When we checked in, a lady in the front desk (Fabriana) was very helpful, extremely friendly and enthusiastic. She served us tea and helped with luggage, really made us felt welcome. I was going to give this hotel a three-star, but bump it to 4-star just because of her.

Many of the rooms have nice lake view but needs update in many places. For example, the hardware of several windows were not operating properly. Once it was opened, it was difficult to close it. Some of the shelves were also loose, not properly attached to the wall.

We had dinner in the hotel twice. We felt the food was reasonable. They only had one waiter/waitress so sometimes it takes a while to find him/her.

Our room was nice, clean, comfortable and overlooking the lake however the hotel itself was nothing special. There were very few guests when we were there and also very few staff. We ate in one night but we were the only people there and we had to search for the waiter every time we wanted a drink!

The hotel was busy building a massive extension which made for a big blot on the otherwise lovel landscape.

The hotel is also a fair distance out of town. They do offer a minibus although the times are a little limited.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at Hosteria Las Dunas for 4 nights in Feb 2013 and had asked our tour operator, Imagine Latin America, to book us in there as we had read the Trip-advisor reviews about the fantastic location and good restaurant.
We were not disappointed in the location - right on the shore of Lake Argentina with wonderful views towards snow capped mountains - I could sit and gaze at that view all day! And the sunsets - wow! Just outside the window were a family of 4 fox cubs who regularly entertained guests with their play and a family of geese who also entertained, but not at the same time as the foxes! All their droppings perhaps needed cleaning from the deck a little more often.
The Hosteria is about 10 minutes by taxi from the centre of El Calafate at a cost of 35 pesos. There is a free, hourly hotel shuttle bus in the afternoon. As noted by other reviewers there is construction work around the hotel. The road is completed but the walkway around the lake us still being done and there is another hotel being built right next door to Las Dunas. We were a bit dismayed when we first drove up but in fact it is all below or to the side of Las Dunas and did not spoil our enjoyment of the wonderful view. We were not aware of much noise.

The sitting area of the hotel is lovely, with rustic comfortable furniture, stone tiled floors and those VIEWS from the windows. As is the restaurant.
Our room also had a good view over the lake, was quiet in that it was not over the kitchen, had good hanging and shelf space and a good bathroom with shower that worked well. However the room was small and hot at night. We could not open the windows - the first night it was too windy and when the wind dropped there were biting insects. The hotel had the hose on the surrounding grass going constantly and once the wind died down the dampness seemed to attract clouds of insects. There was no air con. The bed was ok for my husband but rather hard for me and the walls are thin - I could hear clearly things I would rather not hear in the rooms around.
A big disappointment was the restaurant. Breakfast was fine with a selection of cereals, fruit, croissants, cheeses, meats etc.
Dinner, in our view was poor. I note that this restaurant is rated no. 10 in El Calafate on Trip Advisor and I can only think they had staff problems when we were there. We ate there on 3 nights (mainly because we were too tired to go anywhere else after excursions) On the first night I found the food salty but edible. On the second, my pasta was so salty it was inedible and I had to return it and ask for something without salt. I know I'm someone who doesn't like too much salt but this was excessive for anyone. The third night I asked for food without salt and it was ok but not good. The selection was not good and there did not seem to be much in the meal.
On the 4th night we went to the Dom Pichon Restaurant for Patagonian lamb which was excellent.

In summary, I would recommend Las Dunas for having the best views of any hotel in El Calafate but suggest asking for one of the larger rooms, try the restaurant by all means but be prepared to eat elsewhere as well.

Many hotels in El Calafate are far from center.
Hotel Las Dunas is far from center (30 min walk).
All shuttle/transferts for the tours will arrange pick-up at the hotel Las Dunas.
Despite its location near lake, there are no nice walking possibilities by the lake.
Hotel Las Dunas has a free shuttle but very irregular..
Taxi from center is easy and cheap 5$ (25 Pesos).
All rooms are facing Lake Argentina, are spacious, but a little dated.
Nice rooms with comfortable beds.
Hotel is relatively quiet (construction noise on new road between hotel and lake).
Breakfast is ok but nothing special.
Restaurant ok but limited food menu.
Free wifi but very slow.
Spa treatments available at associate hotel: Alto Calafate hotel (free shuttle)
For next trip, I will stay at a hotel closer to center.
Center of El Calafate has nothing special to offer except, restaurants, travel agencies
and tourist shops.

Room Tip: Choose room on 1st floor better tan ground floor.

Gorgeous views, rooms are a little dated and it is very far from town. It's a cute town, too.We ate there once and it was OK. Breakfast is nothing special. Not as helpful as other places we stayed in Argentina.

I would recommend this hotel for couples or families, as it is quaint, quiet with beautiful lake views....not for a solo traveler, unless that's what you're looking for. Rooms were nice and clean for the value. The breakfast was great with a lot of variety. It is a bit far from town and other hotels if you need to meet up with other friends/travelers you meet during your stay. Hotel staff were professional but I would not say they were "warm", in fact the whole town of calafate just seemed interested in tourist money. For a solo traveler, I would recommend America del Sur Hostel. Great lively staff , comfortable common areas and asado everynight!
