“skiers, climbers and delicious asado”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2012

i spent about 10 days at the Alaska this year on my first ski trip to argentina. it couldnt have been more perfect. the culture of the hostel was awesome- in early september its a combination of skiers, climbers and the occasional wanderer. somewhat younger crowd that was always very social, but never too loud too late. the owners live across the street and are always around to help out... and i mean with anything... we had a skier tear his binding out of the ski at cerro catedral and Javi produced and endless supply of power tools and hardware, not to mention personal expertise, to get us back in the game. he also offers to throw large cookouts pretty regularly... for us this featured the best churipan ive ever had and a mountain of local trout. amazing. i cant say enough good about this place

Room Tip: rooms downstairs are quieter, but a rowdy group should stay in the large suite on the main floor or...

Harvey and Nati bring you in like one of the family, everything you need for a cheep ski holiday is close by. Not in the middle of Bariloche downtown but close enough for a quick bus ride to get anything you need. Ski rental is easier up the mountain so no need to carry it on the bus. Showers were hot and the dormitory beds were comfortable. Large enough kitchen with two stoves, ovens, sinks and fridges. Ask Harvey about playing indoor football with his friends, Great fun after a few beers!!

I've stayed here twice and the next time I go to Bariloche I'll stay again!! If you travel to the area for skiing, hiking, or chilling in general, it's the perfect place to stay. For these reasons the location is great, and the location is not great only if you are looking for a "city" experience in Bariloche. The staff is incredible, the kitchen is fully equipped and spacious, and the common room is very cozy. Not much of a party place, but definitely a friendly atmosphere and it's very common to drink a few beers or some wine before going to bed. Also, if you want nightlife it's just a bus ride away and very accessible. The rooms may not be the biggest or the newest, but they are quite comfortable. When all is said and done Alaska has set the standard and it is the place I compare other hostels to when traveling.

I stayed here for about 5 weeks one winter and felt like I was a part of the family by the end of it! This place is excellent! Very very cozy, with cool views of Cerro Catedral from the front door. The hostel is a little bit out of town, but this just adds to the rustic feel of the hostel, which makes you feel as if you're tucked away in the forests at the base of mountains.

The kitchen is incredibly well equipped, with several stoves, refrigerators and cooking supplies. The bunks in the dorm rooms are solid, so you're not totally shaken awake by your bunk mate getting in and out of bed. A few of the dorms are located below the main floor, which makes sleeping very peaceful and absent of noise from other dorms/floors/etc...

I haven't stayed in a hostel quite like this. If you like large, distant, impersonal hostels such as the Hostel International-types, this place is not for you. If you are friendly, and enjoy peaceful cabin-type of atmospheres, this place is perfect!

I would easily stay here again the next chance I get! Hopefully when I return, it'll be longer than my first visit. Maybe I can just move in! The only reason this place doesn't have 5 stars across the board is there is no fitness center or swimming pool, which is unfair considering that this is a hostel, and those things would detract from the overall experience this lovely place provides.

Room Tip: If you like dorm rooms, anything below the main floor is perfect. My favorite is the 6 bed room in...

Nice people and big kitchen for cooking. Was not a party hostel, which we appreciated. Clean, but a little run-down in some areas, but hardly worth noticing. Best to stay in one of the upstairs rooms as the you hear everything from down below.

Room Tip: Upstairs room

Had a great stay for a week at Alaska. The hostel has a really nice vibe as well as a great communal space and kitchen. The rooms aren't particularly fancy, but not much need to spend daylight hours there anyway as the communal areas are so good. The owners are great and give lots of really useful information when you arrive. The only downside is the lack of lake views and having to catch a bus everywhere (7kms out of town and though there is bicycle rental available, I wouldn't recommend riding on the hilly, narrow streets).
