“Achalay is what you want all hostels to be like”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

Pablo, the owner, is a gem. He provides a clean, comfortable hostel with full amenities while being an amazing host, offering advice and ideas to anyone who comes in. I've even seen him call other hostels for people when it's been booked.

Also Pablo has no qualms with offering advice on how to do trips on your own without a guide service which is a huge plus for budget travelers.

The location is great, just 300m from the civic center area and close to all the bus lines. Also close to club andino for those with questions about trekking.

It's very clean and the kitchen/common room have great space for multiple people to hang out at once.

The asado he offers twice a week is massive. We had chorizo, black sausage, a huge ribeye and another type of sausage with rice, salad, grilled onions, and wine.

If I ever came back, I'd be sure to stay here again.

I have travelled all throughout South America and this hostel was one of my favourites. Pablo is the most warm, welcoming host and hostel owner. The rooms are immaculately clean, beds and linens super comfy. Highly recommend this place!

We stayed here for a week in April. We had a double private room, which was quite nice. A-frame styling, large room, clean and comfortable. The owners obviously like what they are doing! They and the rest of the staff went out of their way to make us comfortable and point us to interesting things to do. Twice each week, they have an asado, which was delicious! We would definitely stay there again! It is only a block away from a really nice brew-pub, Manush, as well!

I've come back to review this hostel after 8 months of travelling, because even though we have stayed in hostels all over the world since, we always come back to talking about this one and how great it was. The atmosphere is what makes this place, with Pablo the owner, going out of his way to make you feel at home. One of our highlights of Argentina was when he bought a massive steak and cooked for everyone in the hostel. Everybody in the hostel sat round the table and enjoyed the steak with salad and red wine and it was one of the nicest social experiences of our trip. Pablo and his wife helped us plan our activities in Bariloche, including a bike ride around the lakes which was stunning. The beds were so comfortable and the breakfast was great. I would definitely recommend staying here to sample true Argentinian hospitality!

We stayed here for 5 nights with our 4 children, in a double and a quadruple room. The beds were extremely comfortable with lovely, warm duvets - a treat as most hostels have sheets and blankets. The only light negative was the pillows, which were uncomfortable but we still slept very well.

The kitchen is the best equipped kitchen of any hostel we've stayed in so far and cooking there was a pleasure. A very large gas oven and a powerful 6 ring hob. There were 2 fridges, so enough space for everyone to store their food. Breakfast was good, with bread rolls and truly delicious home made jams.

Pablo and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. They helped us organise bike hire, and plan what to do and where to eat in Bariloche. Nothing seemed too much trouble and they were always happy to chat as well. Pablo reccommended a great, genuine parilla for dinner too.

The showers were hot and the bathrooms clean, but you have to hire towlels, even with the double room. The hostel is a very relaxed hostel and it's calm and quiet at night, which, when you're there with children is really important. Everyone was very welcoming and we didn't feel uncomfortable with the kids as we do in some hostels. A really lovely place to stay.

I stayed here with my wife and family, including 4 children, in a double and a 4-bed dorm. Rooms and bathroom were clean, kitchen was well equipped with a decent breakfast, and the staff were very helpful with suggestions for activities, and friendly. Predominantly English-speaking guests, but that may just have been coincidence.
