“I cried when we had to leave”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2009

From a magazine ad in 2006 the size of three postage stamps, my husband said, "We're going there someday". December 2008 we found ourselves perched on the edge of the 3000-kilometer shoreline glacial Naual Haupi Lake and the Andes Mountains, sipping champagne at the Hotel Correntoso. This hotel is the most spectacular boutique hotel find we've encountered to date. The facility is immaculate with an authentic humman steam spa, infinity pool, 2 restaurants, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and much more. The view from our lake side room caused us to drop our suitcases upon arrival, and go sit on the deck to soak up the reflection of the mountains in the mirrored lake surface. With several activities and expert guides employed by the hotel, Maximo and Mauricio, we had plenty to do in this remote location: champagne sunset cruise, hiking, swimming, watching the sunset, steams in the humman, spa services, great massages, great mate', shopping in the nearby village, etc. The government has restricted building and noise levels in the area for many years preserving the most peaceful, quiet, clean and pristine natural setting. There are no airplanes going over, no big hotels, no lights within view at night, and no pollution, no trash, no billboards. Nothing to pollute the night sky, and, oh, my God, what a night sky it is! We saw meteors streaking overhead on clear nights and the International Space Station floated right through the center of the Southern Cross. Take your binoculars for a once in a lifetime view of the cosmos. A family of condors make their home on the island. Maximo tried to find them for us on our lake cruise, but we didn't get to see them this time. The hotel staff hooked us up with a river rafting trip down the Lima River. It was a very safe float and spectacular scenery. The trip included a picnic of gourmet cheese, fruit, meats and a very nice bottle of wine. If you are looking for a meal off site, try Tinto Bistro in the Village. The same people also own a German Restaurant further down the highway. Trout fishermen will be in heaven here as the Correntoso River runs into the lake at the edge of the property. When we left, I wept in the cab to the airport wondering if I would ever see such a beautiful, clean, non-polluted, unspoiled, quiet, soulful place again.

Correntoso Hotel is one of the most romantic places i've ever stayed. We got a room with a fantastic view to Lake Nahuel Huapi, and with a nice balcony. The room is perfect ans with space enough to acomodate my wife and a baby bed, It is far from city center and hotel doesn't provide courtesy transfer, but you have 3 easy options: rent a car, take a public bus (0,25 euros for person on an hour-frequently bus or take a hour walking journey). We made the three, and they are all suitable for a nice holliday time. The staff are the family type. The Hotel has 2 different restaurants which are all nice and helps to relax and take you meals at the hotel (despeite being must more expensive than at the Villa La Angostura). But the meals we toke at the hotel are something we will never forget: friendly service, simpathetic waiters, good food, nice wine and a fantastic ambience. I didn't like the meal at Porto Correntoso Restaurant (downstairs) for the dificult to reach it with a baby and for the poor service, nevertheless the location is much more nicer. The poll is also nice and with a nice view. The breakfast is standard one with no big deal.

The hotel is small but with a very good service. The location is fabulous. Great views, peace and tranquility. Don't miss tea time and a gourmet dinner. After that go to the library, choose a book about Patagonia and just stay there, in the living room, near the fire. Enjoy the magic pool with superb lake views and relax in the SPA. Five star, indeed. One of the best Small Luxury Hotels I've experienced.

Hotel Correntoso is a very elegant and charming place. We had a junior suite with a deck over the the Lake and Correntoso River.
We stayed 3 nights and had a wonderful time there. I think one of the highlights of our stay was the warm swimming pool that is half covered half open air. With it´s infinity edge, the yellow of fall trees, yes! we loved it!
The restaurant is great as the staff, specially Maxi, who made our check in and got us a great room.

My wife, 9 year old son and I had the pleasure of a four night stay at the Hotel Correntoso over New Year’s Day, 2007. On the whole, I found the hotel to be well run, and our room comfortable.

The Correntoso is perched above Lago Nahuel Huapi where the Rio Correntoso ends its short run draining Lago Correntoso into Nahuel Huapi. The views to the south of the lake and mountains are gorgeous. Not all of the rooms at Correntoso have this view – some look out to the parking lot in the back, so be sure to know what you are getting.

The hotel is newly renovated (with some additional rooms recently added in a seamless addition on the ground floor). The furnishings and finishes are of first order. The Correntoso became a member of the Small Luxury Hotels recently, and is of that calibre throughout. Our room (dubbed a “Lake Suite” – see my complaint below) was a long oversize standard room with a sleeper sofa and one comfortable easy chair. We had a wall of glass on the lake side of the room, with a patio (shared with the four rooms on that level – so don’t expect privacy) with two chairs.

My only complaint with the room (and this is partly my fault for not asking) was that our “suite” was nothing of the sort – it was simply a large room. I’m of the view that if a hotel calls an accommodation a “suite”, it should be consist of at least two rooms, separated by a door or doorway. That said, ours was a nice enough large room, even if I was disappointed.

The hotel has a nice indoor/outdoor pool – with a sliding divider that allows the inside to be opened to the outside. There was a spa as well, which we didn’t try, and two rather lonely looking treadmills. Our son liked the game room, with its fooseball table.

The service provided by the front desk staff made the hotel stand out. They went out of their way to find out what they could do for us (I had them make reservations for the boat to the Arrayanes National Park, and for dinner on two of the nights). They followed up to see how our dinners/visits went.

We had two dinners in the hotel’s principal restaurant (I think it’s called Gourmet Correntoso now). Both were excellent – and the views of the lake as the light faded were transfixing. Breakfasts were well above average. We didn't try the informal restaurant down the hill from the hotel.

There appeared to be a number of very nice hotels in the Villa la Angostura area (Las Balsas and El Faro among them). The Hotel Correntoso is deservedly among those nice hotels. If you don’t want a classic suite with two rooms, I would recommend it to discerning travelers.

  • Liked — The commanding views of the lake and mountains
  • Disliked — Lack of a true "suite"
