“A small oasis in an arid region”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2007

This is a very pleasant oasis in the arid region of patagonia. The hostess Marcella is attentive to every detail. It is located several miles outside of town near the river that keeps the valley green in this region. Evening dinner is served, however it is not part of the room rate. Breakfast was excellent. The Guest House is separate from the main house. It is a restored farm house complete with fireplace in the dining room and wood floors. The penguin colony at Punto Tumbo is within easy driving distance, or you can be picked up by a local tour guide. We were awoken by the sound of birds which are quite plentiful in the valley.

A working orchard and B&B located in Chubut province.
The food was fresh, plenitful and good and don't go into town to eat; there is nothing except inferior pizza in a pleasant pub. Although the tea house is supposed to be a treat. The staff was lovely and helpful. The rooms are smallish but the facility overall is quite idyllic.A fast river with sheep grazing borders the back of the property. We went bike riding to nearby cherry orchards and smelled lavendar on the breezes. It's a fertile green oasis with a rich river surrounded by desert. Marcela took us for a half day excursion to a nearby palentogical park with dinosaur bones and fossils; she was charming, intelligent and kind. A relaxing and intereting way to spend the day. About 4 hours drive away is Peninsula Valdez, a desert on the Atlantic coast where you can see sea lions, sea elephants and possibly orcas, guanocos and native rodents and birds. There are right whales IN SEASON. It was driving all day on poorly maintained dirt roads (most of Argentina if you are not in a city)to get around and its a dry barren desert. I was disappointed at how far away the animals were from our viewing sites but it was interesting to see them in the wild.(If you have been to the Galapagos, that is superior as far as access to wildlife.) Another day we spent visiting Punto Tumbo, only about 3 hours away and a colony of magellanic penguins...you walk among them close up and it's fun. Less driving but still a full day. The Posada is friendly pleasant place to call home while you take in the sights of Chubut. I am glad we got to be there and especially glad we stayed at Los Mimbres.

The POSADA LOS MIMBRES is a little piece of paradise amidst the arid plains of Patagonia. Nestled in a green valley at a bend of the Chubut River, this inn was a peaceful and beautiful retreat from the hectic pace of our trip. The main building is a hundred-year-old farmhouse. The renovations have preserved the building's historic charm, while providing modern comforts and rustic elegance. All this at an astonishingly reasonable price!

We also found Los Mimbres to be an excellent base for exploration of seaside attractions such as Punta Tombo (huge penguin colony). Only a half hour from Trelew and minutes from the quaint Welsh town of Gaiman, the inn can be reached most easily by car. Lacking wheels, we simply took a taxi from Trelew--inexpensive at the current exchange rate.

But what made our stay at Los Mimbres especially memorable was the warm hospitality of our hosts: the owner, Marcela Plust, and her mother, Ester. They treated us like guests in their home. When we came "home" after a long day of sightseeing, Ester or Marcela would cook us a delicious dinner, using fresh produce from their garden. Then we'd talk about our day--and our lives.

Los Mimbres is an almost undiscovered gem. Find its website and discover it now!
