“Spectacular views in a beautiful estancia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

If you are traveling through the Northwest of Argentina, you shouldn’t miss a stop in Tafi del Valle. Located about 2 hours from Tucuman, it is the place that most people from Tucuman go to escape the heat and city life. After following a curvy mountain road that winds through jungle like forest, you find yourself deposited in an absolutely stunning valley. Surrounded by mountains, it’s hard to decide which view from which side is nicer. The town is more like a little village, very small and welcoming.

We decided to stay at the Estancia Las Carreras, a beautiful property with stunning mountain views from every window and llamas milling about. We stayed in a spacious double room with a private bathroom. Inside the main house, you feel like you are in a museum, everything is antique and very beautiful. The rooms are clean and well kept, the breakfast was more than good but not exceptional although you do get to taste the cheese made in house, which is quite good. The rates are reasonable for what you get. Highly recommended and worth a visit.

We had a good stay here, but I would advice staying more than 1 night to really take advantage of the activities in the region. The owner/manager of the place was very welcoming and showed us the cheese making facilities herself, and checked several times with us to make sure we were OK. The rooms were OK but I found the toilettes a little cramped.

This historic ranch is far, far off the beaten track. Unfortunately we came from San Miguel de Tucuman on the bus, and then took a taxi from Tafi del Valle, where we were stuck in essence, because of no transportation. I was sick and so couldn't take advantage of the horseback riding. Luckily the restaurant is a fine one, even though as one reviewer noted they don't serve vegetables or fruit, but that is very Argentine. The staff is friendly and helpful and the owner, Inez, was extremely kind to us. The decor and attention--lighted candles in the courtyard at night--were delightful and so tranquil. I would love to go back, but only with a car. A jacuzzi would be a perfect addition!

Relaxed atmosphere where everything has it's own rythm and pace. Rooms are well furnished allowing good sleep and relaxation. Breakfast is superb with excellant fresh local products and the option of having dinner at the restaurant is more than appropriate. Weather may intervene to cancel planned activities as in our case (due to local fiercefull winds) like horse riding, or bring dust into the rooms. Stuff are dedicated and helpfull even though most of them do not speek English. It's rather isolated about 30 minutes carefull drive from the nearest city on gravel road.

Room Tip: Be sure you are willing to give up city life alternatives as there is no night or evening activities...

The setting is very nice and if that is all you want then you might be satisfied. I was not.

Breakfast. One of the worst I have had in many years of travel. A glass of orange juice, a yogurt-like drink, two cheese and ham on a plate, stale bread, three other pieces of bread with three pats of butter. No fruit, no cereal, no jam, nothing. Coffee or tea.

Lunch and dinner. The menu has no salads and there are no dishes that include vegetables. I had them make me a limited mixed salad. I had some empanadas on my first day - very greasy. A form of fried potato seemed to be a staple of any main dish.

No maps for hiking. On one afternoon there were directions given to ascend some hills. It is best you are willing to scramble and improvise. Went on a walk to a local waterfall with a member of the staff - it was nice.

Asked to go horseback riding. Was told at 5 PM. Sorry we can't find the horses. Really?

Most of the staff do not speak English. The manager, who does speak English, seemed to have her interest focused on visiting friends.

Final note. I was the only person at the property. Maybe they were just not up to making the effort. In any event, I would not return nor would I recommend this property.

We did not stay at the hotel, but their restaurant was recommended to us and so we drove the 10km from Tafi del Valle on a dirt road, previous phone call to reserve a table and were not disspointed, it was worth it. Our Swiss friends gave this lunch 10 out 10 points after 12 days on the road thru the NW of Argentina. The steaks was perfectly done, the empanadas and pastelitos, were delicious.Very friendly service.

We stayed only one day and regret not staying longer! Rooms are beautiful, very nicely decorated and with amazing views on the grounds. We went for a ride on their horses around the property and enjoyed that very much. We had dinner there and food was ok. Breakfast had limited options but maybe due to the fact that there were only 2 more rooms occupied apart from ours. Staff is very helpful. Beautiful place to stay and relax during your trip to the North of Argentina.

Room Tip: all rooms are beautiful
