“Character in fantastic location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2014 via mobile

If you want great location in the main square, good value, and character then you will love this place. If you are high maintenance, you might not be able to see beyond the old rooms. The hotel was created I 1943 from an old building. Service is variable, depending who is at front desk. They have parking available. They have safe at front for valuables, not in the room. Breakfast is standard but good. Rooms facing square will be noisy until about 11 pm or so. Never was woken up in middle of night (2 nights)

The location of the hotel is great! Close to the museums and all kinds of restaurants. The room was spacious and very clean with a balcony with a nice view. Breakfast was nice, the staff also, very polite and generous. We would stay here again.

Right in the heart of centro, this place is certainly a good place to live at.

Staff: Has minimal knowledge of english, however its not impossible to make them understand what you are looking for

Rooms: We were lucky to get the room on the second floor facing the plaza. There are only two rooms on that have a full balcony and an amazing view. The rooms otherwise are spacious and very well done.

Breakfast: This place has a good breakfast in the morning including fresh coffee and fruits.

Overall the place is very good, just a little bit pricy; however, it well worth it all

Room Tip: second floor rooms facing the plaza (only two of them)

This is our second stay at this hotel. Both times we had the suite at the front of the hotel facing the park. A great room with two balconies. The breakfast was complete and the service by the maid was with a big smile. She has had a long career at the Hotel and is very helpful. The main sitting room on the second floor has computers with free wi fi and panio.

Our thanks to the owner Don Louis for showing us the Cafe del Tiempo. The meal was great and very relaxing. Also he recommended the restaurant Empanadas Saltenas for the best empanadas. Make sure you try both and book the suite.

Room Tip: Book the suite

The location of this small and traditional older hotel is it's trump card obviously - right on the beautiful colonial main square. The hotel is clean and the staff is friendly - they even try to speak some English. The communication on time of booking was rather difficult however as we prefered to book directly with them - this can probably be avoided booking on an internet platform. We had a room with partial view of the square which was nice and probably quieter than directly on the square. The room was smallish but nice and airy, the bathroom rather basic and with older installations, but clean. We enjoyed living in "colonial" style rather than in a modern building, it adds to the feeling of stying in a colonial city and the central location was very nice. Buffet breakfast was limited to few choices, but service was friendly and we did not need more.
There was internet connection in our room, however with not that much space in the room itself we prefered to use the lounge, where you will find computers for guest use as well.
We have stayed in the hotel just next door during our last visit and compared to this one (colonial style hotel as well), we think the prize-for-money ratio at the Colonial Salta is much better. We would certainly visit again and can recommend this hotel.

A small and very old hotel situated in the heart of a small and very old colonial town in the Andes Mountains is Argentina. Clean, very kind and friendly staff, little English, lots of good will.
One morning I did not feel well and the lady who served the breakfast offered to call a doctor for me. As I really felt quite lousy , I accepted the offer and after a while a young woman doctor knocks at my door. She is knowledgeable, thoughtful , kind and very professional .
Once the medical consultation over, I asked her about the bill and she said that we have to go down stairs and sort it out at the front desk. Which we did. The Hotel Colonial paid for the doctor's visit and DID NOT charged me - the tourist - one pesos ! This is the hotel's policy, to cover for emergency calls for their clients !! HAVE YOU EVER HEARD about such a policy in a small and very unpretentious hotel in the whole world? Well, Argentinian people's warmth and humanity is reflected in everything they do!
