“An above average place with an excellent staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2014

The Convento is an above average hotel. It is close to the Plaza but far enough away to escape the noise and hubbub. The gardens are lovely the breakfast is good. Because we were passing in and out of Salta , we stayed in two different rooms of vastly different quality and size. Even though the rooms are not the best, the staff is. THEY WERE FABULOUS!

The rooms are so nice and comfortable...the beds were wonderful. The location was excellent. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Many of them understand and speak some English. They kept our luggage for us while we went on an overnight trip to Cafayate. Be sure to do that tour if you can; it is a beautiful drive....nature at it's best. Hope to return to this hotel in the future.

Hotel del Antiguo Convento was a budget hotel in an excellent location that had everything we needed. Rooms were fairly small but beds were comfortable and the bathroom clean, with plenty of hot water. Right next door is a great little restaurant, El Palacio Pizza and Empanadas (see my separate review in the restaurants section) and the hotel is situated close to the main square. Wifi worked well and there were many pieces of lovely artwork in the rooms and around the hotel. Breakfast was adequate but consisted mostly of cakes and pastries, with no juice or fruit offered.
Recommended for those on a budget who want a comfortable hotel.

The narrow entry passage belies the huge interior of this newly renovated and beautifully converted monastery, with it’s many courtyards and staircases, yet it has only fifteen rooms. We walked in off the street and were shown two rooms. The first room down stairs was off the courtyard …a bit on the small side with no windows and was offered for 390 pesos or US$39 cash. We opted for the larger room upstairs with a window to the garden for a few pesos more. After reading some of the reviews complaining about noise from the courtyard I’m glad we did. It is really quiet and peaceful here.

Our room # 7 is quite large and has a second bed, set up for a couple with child. It has a large flat screen TV with several English speaking movie channels, but no English news or current affairs. It comes well appointed with power outlets, good towels and hand towels, bathroom products and a bath. The shower is set over the bath, which I don’t particularly like, but the water pressure is good and always hot and plentiful. Our room has a wall heater and air-con, a safe with instructions that actually works, a big chest of drawers, and hanging space for our clothes.

Breakfast was a disappointment, even for Argentina (see my photos). I don’t eat bread or pastries for breakfast, so if there are no eggs normally I will just satisfy myself with some fruit and a coffee. Here was no fruit and even the so called orange juice was only sugar water with flavouring. And the coffee… forget it.

I beg to differ with other reviewers regarding the location. It is not two blocks from the town square as one suggested. Rather it is almost four blocks, so I’d say the position is OK but not great. It’s a bit of a walk to the bus depot but doable if you’re not carrying your luggage. It is also within walking distance from our very favourite restaurant in all South America, the Aniceto café behind the plaza.

On our first tip to Salta we stayed in the Ankara Suites which was really nice (US$100) but was a bit further out of town. On our next visit we will most likely stay at one of the hotels we discovered that are located on the plaza, like Hotel Victoria Plaza (US$60)

The only other negative was some unnecessarily exposed wires inside the wall next the air-con unit (see my pictures) which should have been covered.

Overall I think this converted convent is a good choice for the budget minded traveller, and I have no problem recommending it, but I’m giving it only four stars because the breakfast lets it down. Get it together guys, you can do better.

Room Tip: A room off the courtyard is noisy and has no windows. We were on the first floor in # 7, which was q...

This former convent is a lovely place to stay while in Salta - at a reasonable price. The rooms are clean and comfortable. There's a small pool and courtyard. It's just a couple of blocks to the main square. Excellent restaurants are just steps away. The desk staff speaks good English. They are helpful and friendly. Great breakfast!

Most of the tourist I run into over my last trip to Salta and Jujuy were Europeans, this explains this English review. Convento hotel is good (nice rooms, overall good attention, perfect backyard with small pool) but it has two rooms in a central "patio" which is virtually flooded day and night with people: old ladies playing cards, locals sipping a capuccino, even birthday parties. As I wasn´t warned about this fact, I caught into the trap of one of these two rooms and could hardly sleep. As for the rest, it is a convenient price/quality hotel.

Room Tip: Done, I think.

This is a very clean, well decorated, quiet hotel on the edge of the main city, so easy walking to most main attractions and restaurants. They have a small gym, splash pool and garden. The staff are a bit distant, but friendly when asked for help. I don't see what more you could ask for in this northern town.
