“excellent place to stay in great natural environment”

La Comarca

On our trip from Cordoba to the North of Argentina, the final place we stayed in was La Comarca. After travelling and staying in Salta this was a great and pleasant surprise. Although we had seen some beautifull landscapes throughout our trip, the quality of the hotel with traditionally built appartments of adobe material on the bottom of the mountain of the seven colours was really one of the highlights. Instead of staying two nights in busy and touristy Salta, we would have loved staying in La Comarca for more then one night and two days. Fortunately we arriveld early taking the wonderfull ruta 9 from Salta to Purmamarca, so we could enjoy the nice spa with heated pool, and enjoy a great lunch with regional specialties. The staff was very helpfull giving us some nice tips on where to travel next. The road we took to the salt flats "salinas grandes" was as spectecular as promised with a high point of 4160 meters and a beautifull ride over the salt flats. The road was in great condition and the excursion would have been perfect if we could have stayed another day in La Comarca. The rooms are very spacious and beautifully decorated, great bathroom, and a central living with tv screen and plenty of books to read and sit by the fireplace. Also the restaurant is great with good service. One of our honeymoon highlights!

We stayed at La Comarca for 3 days and loved it. The architecture is authentic Purmamarca, following the style of a village, with colours that match closely the mountains which surround it, it has astounding views 360 degrees. It is a very relaxing place, with autoctonous landscaping with cardon cactus and other species. The rooms are ample and confortable, tastefully decorated with modern locally styled furniture, although they do not have tv/cdplayer/wifi, also no mini bar or AC which in the stifling summer can be bothersome during daytime. The restaurant has a very interesting and varied menu, good Argentine wine list, very good service, they accommodate to special needs and have service all day long. There is a sleek all purpose entertainment center at one end of the hotel, where they have a small pool, in an enclosed place, I would say the gym and spa are virtually non existent, although they do call them "mini". The tv room is ample and confortable, however, it makes no sense to have one tv for families and adults of the whole hotel. There is one computer with internet connection, which also is quite limited. The hotel gives all the support needed for exploring the nearby areas and towns.

“Smelly youth hostal flair for 4-5 star price”

La Comarca

Overall the worst hotel I have ever seen at that price. The rooms have basically no comfort, no TV, no mini-bar and no safe. Especially the later is of importance due to the poor quality of doors and the open maid's storeroom with all the keys just next door. We asked for an other room, however, due to incomprehensible reasons the hotel was sold out. As we could not stand the smell of sewage in the room, we asked for a transfer to another hotel. As the used a perfumed room spray at arrival the problem must have been known before and deliberatley tried to coverd it up . The room anyway rsembled more a grotty cellar room due to the low ceiling and small windows. At least they transferred us in a much nicer hotel just next door. Maybe other rooms, cabanas or houses are better, however, it has to be a huge upgrade to justify the price. For little more you get a 4 to 5 star hotel in nearby Salta or even BsAs. Why not staying in Salta and do Purmamarca as day trip?

Management Response

As the manager of La Comarca Hotel, I was truly surprised to read this review. First of all, it is our policy to inform our guests of all the services the hotel provides as well as all the facilities available: a TV set in the lobby, a swimming-pool, a mini-gym, a sauna, Internet access, wi-fi, a restaurant, a wine cellar and a library.
Regarding the inconvenience mentioned, even if it is true that the weather conditions had been very unusual (since it had not rained that much for forty years) and that the room had been subject to repairs, there was no bad faith from any of our staff members to make you feel so uneasy. It is weird though that none of our guests has ever complained about “smelly” conditions.
Furthermore, this guest was personally given the opportunity to move to another hotel as soon as the complaint was lodged, but it was rejected given that his mate was not feeling very well and that he had very bad reviews of the hotel we suggested transfering them to.
Consequently, we were totally puzzled when he and his friend felt an urge to leave the hotel at 1.00 a.m.
I believe there was no need to use ill manners towards our staff, who have always stood out for being solution-oriented and truly committed to giving our guests the most pleasant stay.
Finally, I think this guest forgot to mention that our hotel ended up paying for the rate difference for TWO consecutive nights so that they could stay at the hotel they originally rejected.

“La Comarca: Lots of growing pains”

La Comarca

THE SHORT OF IT:

La Comarca is a lot like a young teenager.

It has a lot of potential, and some beauty is starting to emerge, but there are some noticeable blemishes, being around it can be a little awkward, and it takes a lot of money.

In two or three years, guest will arrive to find beautiful, hewn stone rooms with wooden floors, sizeable bathrooms, cactus gardens, a stream that wanders through the property, a spacious pool, and a full-service spa.

Right now, they find dusty landscaping with a few catci studding odd corners, a restaurant that frequently isn’t open for dinner and serves scraps of fancy bread for breakfast. (And bring your own butter, because, despite the limited breakfast menu, they tend to run out of it. The cows who roam the alfalfa field behind the hotel are apparently unwilling to share.) Add to that the “no frills” beds sporting nothing more than sheets and blankets, bathrooms with paint-stained tile, and toilet seats that aren’t quite screwed on as tightly as they should be.

It’s not to say I didn’t have a good time at La Comarca. It was just disappointing. Management has a long way to go before catching up to the grandeur that they advertise on their Web site.

What the Web site showed: (with the caveat that the hotel would be fully operational in June, 2005)

-Rooms with plush furniture, pottery, and artwork
-There’s a heated pool
-a full spa and a gymnasium
-a restaurant featuring regional cuisine
-a library

What we found: (In late July, 2005)

-A bed with a sheet and a blanket. Two small night tables were our only furniture.
-An empty pool
-A spa and gymnasium still under construction
-A restaurant that wasn’t open either of the two nights we stayed there (one night, they said they were shut down because it was going to be painted. The painting wasn’t done until the following night, but the restaurant was closed both nights.)
-There was a library?

The buildings are stunning, stone edifices coloured to match the orange hills surrounding them. (Purmamarca is famous for the multi-coloured rocks in the area.) The floors are either hardwood or tile, and separate cabañas with fireplaces and kitchenettes can be rented.

The furnished rooms are stunning. However, it seems like the place was supposed to be up and fully running around mid-2005, but they are nowhere near being finished.

My fiancée and I believe we were the first ones ever to stay in our room, as knobs and handles still had plastic covering them, like they had just been bought. Another hint we got was when a workman barged into our room, carpenter belt and all. I don’t blame him: I’m sure nobody at the front desk bothered to tell him our room had occupants. And as Spartan as our room was, it didn’t come equipped with even a “Do Not Disturb” sign.

In addition, we woke up to a chorus of hammers at 7:30 a.m., as the day’s work commenced, and they kept ringing well into the evening.

It seems to me the hotel is having trouble getting up to speed (and maybe having enough rooms open to keep any kind of cash flow) so they rent out rooms that aren’t quite ready.

We paid 130 pesos a night, far too much for what we got from it.

Note: It’s common practice for hotels in Argentina to ask for a 50 percent deposit up front, especially for a multi-night stay. They usually won’t accept credit cards, and tell guests that they must make the deposit into a bank account. (In Argentina, that often means a wait of 25 minutes or more.) La Comarca is no exception.
