“Great place for families and large groups”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

We are part of a group of families and friends who have spent the last two Thanksgivings here. The food is wonderful, the accomodations are comfortable and the setting is beautiful. There are lots of different kinds of activities for all ages. The two days we spent here just flew by. I can't wait until next Thanksgiving.

We just returned from our second trip to Saguaro Lake Ranch. The staff is amazing. We always enjoy the amazing location. The kids had fun playing ping pong and soccer. We went on the horse ride for the first time. Last time we enjoyed a boat tour on the Desert Belle.

My wife and I just spent to wonderful days here. The staff was some of the best we have ever experienced. They are friendly, helpful, and courteous. They learned our names and called us by name throughout our stay. The room was small and dated, but met our needs well. The breakfast that is included is substantial. The first day the menu included fresh fruit, eggs cooked to order, bacon, home fries and blueberry pancakes. On day two we enjoyed a green chili egg bake, hashbrowns, bacon, oatmeal, and fresh fruit. There was a nice assortment of coffee, tea, milk and orange juice. We are planning a return trip in 2013. We chose to go to dinner in town (Mesa. AZ) but there is a dinner available nightly at the ranch. A caveat is required here. We were pleasantly invited to a beef stew dinner, that would cost $25 per person. So that's fifty bucks for two people. For 25 bucks a pop, I would require that someone feed me my stew in my room (maybe my expectations are too high). I think you are paying for convenience, saving gas money, and also building relationships with the staff and guests.

Saguaro Lake Ranch is the perfect place to relax and unwind. If you need WiFi or TV this is NOT the place for you--the rooms don't even have clocks. What the ranch does have is peace and quiet, beautiful sunrise/sunsest, a friendly and helpful staff, and good food. We had some animal visitors come by as well--a wild horse, a couple of coyotes, and some tarantulas. We rented some kayaks from the hotel and went down the Salt River--beautiful scenery and more wildlife. We really enjoyed our stay here are hoping to come back in the future.

We were fortunate to stay at the ranch from 04/26/12-04/29/12 for a mini vacation. The owners and staff were all so friendly. The breakfasts were delicious and we left so stuffed that lunch wasn't needed. Our favorite item was the banana french toast...wonderful! We took a trail ride and enjoyed the views of the desert and of Saguaro Lake. Our guide was fun and provided a lot of information regarding the flora, fauna, and history of the region.
We would also recommend taking the kayaking tour of the lower Salt River.....amazing views and easy to complete even for the novice.
Finally, the location is spectacular. Nice and quiet. Views from our cabin were of the mountains and the river was steps away. We highly recommend staying here to get away from civilization and enjoy this natural setting, views, and wildlife.

Room Tip: Some cabins are by the river and others closer to the office. All are quiet.

My wife and I had an extra day in the Phoenix area and were lucky enough to stumble across this place on TripAdvisor. The folks who run it are just about as friendly as you can get and will make you feel right at home. The circa 1930 cabins are pretty rustic, but we didn't go there to watch Sponge Bob reruns. We went there to have some quality time together.
Quality time is what we found.

The kayaking is a must on the Salt River. We saw heron, cranes, trout, giant carp, bass, javelina, coyote, eagles and we even saw wild horses in the desert next to the river. It is a lazy river with very few rapids, yet the current keeps good time and with infrequent paddling you are at the pick up point in a little over 2 hours. Make sure you get water on the way to the ranch as there are no stores or gas. You can make it from the 202 to the ranch in about 20 minutes and there is a Walgreens just as you get off of the highway. Get yourself some water!

Your experience would not be complete without the sunset. Most villages that were started to support the folks that built local dams were simply left alone or torn down once the dams were built. Not so with Saguaro Lake Ranch. The view of the mountains is too beautiful to tear down the place. Make sure you are on your cabin's porch at least 20 minutes before sundown and you will watch the sun paint the mountain face until well after it sets. It was an all around great experience to share some one on one time with my wife. The place is rustic and there are no TVs, so be prepared for some quality time and conversations!

Room Tip: Get some provisions (snacks, water and beer) before you go into the National Forest. For dinner, th...

We stumbled upon this little ranch and inn while looking for a guided horseback tour near Scottsdale. I can't rate or review the actual rooms or cottages, since we didn't stay. But the setting was stunning, the folks and wranglers operating the place are fantastic, and everything was neat, clean -- pristine even -- and absolutely lovely. Upon driving up to the ranch (which is a pleasant experience in itself with the views) we were snapping pictures and gasping at the mountains, rocks, river, and scenery. Then we saw the cottages and realized this was more than just a riding stable. We were asked to use the restrooms before the horseback tour, and even these "outdoor" bathrooms were a pleasant surprise. I immediately picked up a flyer for the inn, because I knew this would be a place I could stay in the future. They had several cottages set by the shore of a river that somehow managed to look tropical; other rooms were available apartment-style and had quaint little patios with seating and flower pots and grills. The 2-hour ride through the desert and overlooking Saguaro Lake was phenomenal. The horses are well cared for, the area is part of the Tonto National Forest, and the views are superb. I don't know how many can be accommodated in each of the cottages or rooms, as the flyer only mentions a price "per double occupancy." but I think it's worth the phone call and research, especially if you're looking for something a little more rustic and intimate. They also rent kayaks and tubes for the river, will provide meals in some of the packages, and cater to events (such as weddings).
