“Forget Hotel Cataratas-- Go To The Sheraton!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2012

Originally booked Hotel Cataratas because we could not get a reservation at the Sheraton during busy time. This hotel is extremely worn, in the rooms and hotel itself and is 28 km from the actual falls. Because it is close to the Easter holiday, one night was $450 per night. Upon arrival, we decided to check for last minute rooms at the Sheraton and were able to switch hotels. Originally the staff told us we would not need to pay but then they changed their minds and charged us for a night regardless. Save yourselves the trouble. The Sheraton is much better appointed, in the park and was essentially the same price. Go to the Sheraton and not to Hotel Cataratas.

We spent three nights at the hotel. It was acceptable. Rooms were large, beds okay, staff responsive to requests. We needed to change rooms the first day as the air conditioner did not work and the fan was noisy. They promptly moved us two doors down. It was quiet and everything worked to our satisfaction. The grounds are large, with a pool and large cool jacuzzi, plus an interesting little rainforest path. The bath/shower had a rather odd "swinging" door, which allowed water to splash onto the floor of the bathroom. We used the tub plug to jam the door, so it would not open out into the rest of the bathroom. (I am sure the maids appreciated it, as they did not remove our ingenious device!) However, the bathrooms had been updated and remodeled, so that was nice. The hotel is quietly located a few miles from the town. So, if you want to be "where the action is" you may wish to select a hotel in town with the rest of the younger set. We found the local bus to be very handy. For $2.00, we could catch the bus into town quite easily, and for $2.00 we could be dropped off, right in front of the hotel. We also rode the bus to and from Iguazzu Falls for a fee of $10.00 one way. It was quite convenient. The falls were the purpose for the trip, and well worth it. I would recommend this hotel for budget minded travelers who are expecting a clean, large, non-elaborate room with an accommodating staff.

Room Tip: Request a quiet room with a working air conditioner. Rooms at the front of the hotel were quiet as...

didn't help that we thought we were booking Hotel DAS Cataratas (Orient Express) but in my opinion it's misleading to call your hotel a very similar name as this causes confusion. They claim they have 5* - outrage! I guess this is becuase they tick all the boxes (gym, games room, mini golf, tennis etc.) but in actual fact it's all a farce. The mini golf is the size of my bathroom (broken clubs), the tennis court is half-sized, 2 machines (out of 12) in the gym actually worked but the smell of cigarette smoke mixed with sulphur meant we didn't stay for long... ping pong bats with no rubber and a pool table with half the balls, a broken cue and broken pockets.
I tried to tell the waiter the wine was corked - the manager came over, told me i was wrong and said i had to drink it, or pay for a $300 bottle instead. Just in general really awful and I think whoever is dishing out stars should be ashamed.

I went to this hotel some weeks ago, and have been upmost dispointed like never before.
First of all, I am an experienced traveler, and this is the first time ever I write a negative comment on trip advisor. Also, it was part of a backpacking trip, so I wasn't in a mood to necessarily expect the best service on earth... just a clean, friendly and convenient place.
The hotel itself is completely out of date, and you would wonder why on earth the still have 5 stars (2 would be a max).
The rooms are not even clean, and I really sleapt there as I had no other choice.
The location is really in the middle of nowhere, between Puerto Iguazu city and the airport. You will need an expensive taxi ride for everything you will do.... unless you want to try the restaurant, which I did not after seeing the room...
Additional comment: I guess most guests are interested in visiting the falls... and I was extremely surprised that no information (AT ALL) is available in the hotel !!!!
Last, I made some queries to the hotel manager, who made commitments but did not hold any of them... and surprisingly wasn't here when I checked out.
Cherry on top of that: for about 1.5kg of laundry (a small bag...) I have had to pay 400 pesos (65€ !!!); which at first they tried to invoice 700 pesos !!

Last advice: DON'T GO THERE !
There are many nicer options in Puerto Iguazu or around, don't be fooled by the 5 stars.

Old style hotel with spa and swimming pool. Food is ok and breakfast better than describe here by some. Free internet in the hall. Taxis will drive you to town for 20 pesos and 60 pesos to falls. Air cond noisy but working ,,,,really noisy.
