“A hidden gem in Argentina's wine region”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2010

Lovely place, lovlier people! We fell in love with the area, the people & the wine. The food was excellent, the service always wonderful & the accomodations lovely. We barely left the grounds of Algodon for the 3 days we were there--we felt as tho we'd already found the best in the area. Highly recommended!

I highly recommend Algodon Wine Estates. We came on the Honeymoon special, which included 3 nights, daily breakfast, one dinner, horseback riding, wine tasting, in-room massage, and a spa day with lunch - maybe even more. The service was great - there is always someone in the lobby who speaks English, and they will call you cabs, recommend restaurants, etc. The restaurant on the estate was amazing - interesting gourmet food, and fairly cheap. Breakfast, either delivered to your room or in the restaurant was also great. Wine was also good - try the Chardonnay Reserva on a hot day, or the Gran Reserva any other time. The estate is expanding, so go soon before it gets more expensive - it was really an amazing deal at the end of 2009. Only thing I didn't like was the town - San Rafael is not worth venturing out into.

We spent two nights at Algodon Wine Estates in late November 2009 and had a wonderful time. Everyone was extremely helpful and made us feel at home, right down to homemade truffles left on our pillows at night. Our room opened out onto a comfortable covered patio with couches that overlooked the quiet, peaceful grounds and pool area. We ate one dinner up at the club house and were pleasantly surprised by the upscale service, the delicious food and the incredibly reasonable prices. (We say "surprised" because the restaurant was empty when we arrived, so we doubted whether we made a good choice. Turns out we were just American early birds who eat at 8 -- everyone else showed up after 10 pm.) The breakfast was fantastic - you have the option of having it delivered to your outside patio table, which we highly recommend. We left feeling that we had found an exceptional bargain - much cheaper than comparable lodging in the Mendoza area. Driving from Mendoza to San Rafael is interesting if a bit stark, as the highway traverses a very arid high plain with nice views of the Andes to the West. But the town of Mendoza itself was really gorgeous - and we found it to be more pleasant than the Maipu area of Mendoza, where we spent a few nights prior. San Rafael has wide avenues with shade trees and the vineyards look like vineyards. We would recommend a trip to San Rafael and we would highly recommend spending a few nights at the very hospitable, comfortable, and affordable Algodon Wine Estates while there.

Turned up solely to play golf, got to the 1st T and found that instead of a proper 18 hole course they have turned it into 9 holes with different sets of T's? Once we got round to the 7th T which is elevated we could see in the distance the remnants of the back nine fairways and greens. Mind you, we played in 30degs C and it is very sandy soil & with the lack of paying players on our day, I could see why they probably decided to shut down the back 9. Greens were excellent, however fairways were rock hard & bereft of grass in areas, probably due to the climate and soil conditions. I probaly will not play this one again during our stay. Costs were V cheap at 30 pesos each. Had a late lunch afterwards & the staff were very attentive and wanting to please & the food & Algodon' s wine were excellent. I've remarked that I wouldn,t recommend this hotel to a friend but only on the golf course impression. I'm sure that the hotel would be ok. PS you need a car for this place, it's approx 20kms from S Rafael

Dear Cultergolf,

Thank you very much for your feedback. I am delighted that you enjoyed your dining experience at our award-winning restaurant. I am sorry to hear however that the golf course wasn’t up to your expectations. Please be advised that the back nine holes are new to our estate and, because their landscaping and seeding were only recently completed at the end of last summer (March 2009), the new nine are not yet open to the public.

Our estate is located approximately 20 kms (about 12 miles) from downtown San Rafael and is easy to find, but (as is the nature of any rural wine country) a rental car is indeed a sensible recommendation for visitors on an extended stay, or for those touring the wine roads of the Mendoza Province. Please note that Algodon Wine Estates can arrange transportation for any of our guests traveling to or from the local airport, neighboring wineries, downtown San Rafael, and other external recreations.

In regards to our hotel lodge and villa, we hope you will consider recommending our hotel to your friends and acquaintances based on the quality of our services and accommodations, which we pride ourselves on. We were recently awarded Great Wine Capital’s prestigious 2010 International Award for excellence in Accommodation, as well as their 2010 Silver Medal (National Award) for Innovative Wine Tourism Experiences.

We also hope that you’ll return to our golf course once the entire 18 holes are officially open for play, and share your thoughts with us once again regarding your experience. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Diego Coll Benegas

We stayed at this incredible winery for 3 nights around Christmas this year and were thrilled with the accomodations and service.

The property was breathtaking with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and farmland. The newly built rooms were spacious and the lodge had plenty of patio space and grounds to walk about.

The food, restaurant, golf course, pool, reasonable price and attention to detail from the staff made this the perfect location to relax in San Rafael (I would have been content skipping our time in BA and going directly to Algadon). We all loved our time on this beautiful piece of property!!
