“wonderful stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2010

What a wonderful hotel! From the reservation on to the meals, everything was perfect. They have complied with my request of a non-smoking room on a quiet floor, which I think makes a trip much more enjoyable. The room is huge, and so is the marble bathroom. The whole personnel is extremely kind and helpful, the restaurant is very good - and in a beautiful setting, with a full view of the kitchen. Wifi Internet was available in the lobby (the reception provides a password), but we were able to use it even in the room. The hotel is located right in the center of Mendoza, which is a very pleasant city, and worth a walking tour. Don't forget to make reservations for the delicious meals at restaurants Azafran and Ocho Cepas - only two blocks from the hotel. And, also in the vicinity, to book the wine tours (Lujan de Cuyo and Valle del Uco) with Ampora Tours - simply amazing!

We took the short plane ride from Santiago, Chile to spend two days in the Mendoza, Argentina wine region. AmEx messed up our reservation for transfer from the airport to the hotel. We found someone who called the hotel. They were extraordinarily kind & helpful, told us the man we found is safe & would take us to the hotel. They told us not to worry about paying him (we didn't have Argentine pesos). When we arrived, our reserved room wasn't ready (it was early morning). They immediately upgraded us & told us that breakfast would be provided for our stay since we were so inconvenienced. Everyone from the front desk, bellmen, doormen, driver for our tour & cleaning people & restaurant staff were incredibly caring. We travel all over the world & found this staff to be among the best. We shall return!

A beautiful hotel right in the middle of town with all the shopping and restaurants on the doorstep. we weren't sure if we wanted to spend that much on a hotel for four nights but we were sooooo glad we did. Wonderful location, lovely pool and gym, EXCELLENT restaurants and wine bars, and the best breakfasts we've had for a while. This really is by far the best hotel in Mendoza. We also considered the Sheraton, but the location of that was nowhere near as good.

All in all, the Hyatt still seems to be the best choice for Mendoza city. It is located on the main city square, within walking distance to an array of evening activities, and is quite reasonably priced. Our room (a Andes King on the fifth floor) had a HUGE walk-in waterfall shower with amazing water pressure. (There was also a bath and standard shower.) The historic facade of the hotel is quite impressive.

As for practical details: Although the free internet is supposed to be limited to the lobby, we had a strong signal in our room. The gym is solid with two treadmills, a few bikes and elliptical machines, and plenty of weights. The pool is good for lounging (but not laps). The spa facilities include a sauna, steam room, and hot tub -- and staff offering fresh juices -- although the "Swedish" message was more of a relaxation message. The concierge was helpful with reservations and arrangements, and we really enjoyed our afternoon glass of wine or snack in the cafe, located in the historic portion of the hotel. (We didn't try any of the hotel restaurants, and the piano bar was closed.) Also, in case you were afraid you'd miss any of your favorite games in the US, the Hyatt has a whole array of sports channels (in English and Spanish), both in the rooms and in the Vines of Mendoza cafe. The same was true for news channels.

My wife and I chose this hotel for our four day-five night Mendoza wine tasting and touring trip. The hotel is right in the middle of where one wants to be if staying in Mendoza. It is a functional hotel but one needs to understand that it more resembles a nice Hyatt, Marriott or Hilton than a Park Hyatt, which is comparable with a Four Seasons, a Peninsula, or a Mandarin Oriental. By those standards this hotel falls short, but by analyzing it as what it is rather than what it says it is the hotel is satisfactory.

Rooms: We had a deluxe King room with a view of a side street. The room was large with modest furnishings. It was quiet and dark for sleeping. The bathroom was very nice but only had one sink and there was no door to the toilet room. The shower and tub were in the same part of the bathroom so they could not be used simultaneously. Strange design. . . All in all the room was satisfactory.

Physical Facility: The hotel is most welcoming when you arrive. There are two attractive cafes on each side of the entrance and the white "mansion" is very attractive. However, when you walk inside you immediately smell cigarette smoke (from the attached casino with an open door to the lobby) and feel like you walked into an atrium of glass and tile. There are two glass towers at the back (where the rooms are located) so the whole design just doesn't work. It's like combining an 1800's Georgian mansion with a 1970's modern ranch. Tough to do and just doesn't work.

Bar/Restaurant: There are two bars and two restaurants, both of which are fine but neither of which are great. The service is fine and the folks who work there are nice enough. We did not have dinner at either restaurant so I can't comment on what might be their strong suit. The wine bar in the back of the hotel is very strangely designed but did have a very nice selection of local wines at very reasonable prices.

Service: Service was fine. Again, think Marriott or normal Hyatt, certainly not Park Hyatt level service.

Value: The price was not excessive for what we got. Actually, this is one area where this hotel excels. The old saying "you get what you pay for" should have tipped me off as to the actual quality of this hotel. It was way less than half of the Buenos Aires Park Hyatt, which is a fabulous hotel (reviewed separately).

Bottom line: It depends on what one is looking for. If someone comes to this hotel expecting a Park Hyatt experience then he/she will be disappointed. However, if one wants a clean, modern, practical full service hotel then this is adequate. I can't help but think that there may be an inn or a bed and breakfast somewhere soon that could give a visitor a bit of charm and personality along with a place to lay one's head.
