“Park Hyatt - the location is their saving grace”

Park Hyatt Mendoza

My husband and I stayed at the Park Hyatt in March of 2007 for three nights as our first stop on our honeymoon. Our travel agent recommended we stay in Mendoza itself and unfortunately the Park Hyatt was the only hotel at the time that would offer the level of service we were looking for. For background, my husband are I are in our mid-20's and I speak Spanish fairly fluently.

Our problems started at check-in, when the front desk attempted to charge us $70USD more per night than the rate we booked with. Despite us having an email confirmation from our travel agent with the correct rate, it took 2 days for them to correct the issue, and that was after my husband followed up with a manager. We next used their car service for a winery tour, where the driver attempted to sell us "the best bottle from the best vintage of Mendoza" (2002 Angelica Zapata) for $60 USD per bottle after a long story on how the vintage was sold out and he knew the gentleman with the last 2 cases. That wine was found in a store in Mendoza for $25 USD. Not the kind of behavior you expect from a Park Hyatt. We did contact the hotel chain after our stay, but never really received a response from them regarding the behavior.

The rooms were well-appointed, but the set-up was a bit strange with the closet being in the bathroom. The bathroom was on the larger side.

The hotel did have good points - we enjoyed the location in Mendoza and we're glad we opted to stay in the city rather than the countryside. Prior to our arrival, we had contacted the concierge regarding dinner reservations and all of those were taken care by the time we checked in, The hotel was very good at ensuring their guests had some form of transportation whenever they desired it.

Still, the positives weren't enough to outweigh the negatives in our opinion, and in the future we would select a different hotel in Mendoza.

Hitting the wineries was a total bust. It was winter. Not very pretty
and honestly, the wine places we did go to like Norton, sort of stared us down to buy something. We had only one tasting! Anyway, the Park Hyatt. Amazing! We spent a lot of time enjoying this hotel and our plush room. The shower was itself fantastic. All glass..high
ceilings with a huge rain imitation showerhead. My 6' 4'' husband loved it. Lots of room! We loved the city and couldn't have had a better location to bop around. When it comes to high end hotels, I don't often think.. 'wow! this is worth the price', but it was.

“Where they think alot of themselves”

Park Hyatt Mendoza

The US dollar is strong and as a result, I think the Park Hyatt is seeing a different variety of tourist than they usually like. It was clear that European tourists and those from South America got a warmer reception than the middle class tour groups from the US. Perhaps its their fatigue from too many US visitors who dress far more casually and conduct themselves with less continential flair and subtlety than the visitors they used to get before the peso devaluation. The typical friendliness of Argentines still surrounds you, just not at the Park Hyatt. The rooms are clean and modern. The presence of a clothes closet in the bathroom is strange and the sliding doors are impossible to move. I really pity the cleaning staff who have to lift them to make them move at all. The pool is quite pleasant, but there is very little hospitality from the front desk to the restaurant to the upstairs bar. I speak Spanish, though poorly, and usually find it is welcomed. Here it wasn't. I missed the warmth of the people of Argentina here and would pick another place to stay for that alone.

“Disappointing service but good location & nice amenities”

Park Hyatt Mendoza

My entire party was extremely disappointed by the service provided. We have all stayed in Park Hyatts before as well as other luxury hotels/resorts and we were surprised by the poor quality of service exhibited by this Park Hyatt.

I was not certain if we were treated differently because our presence was perhaps not their usual clientele or if the treatment was equal among all guests. (We were a group of 9 MBA students in our mid to late twenties; most of the hotel consisted of guests who were older and/or more professionally established.) Details of our disappointing experience are discussed further below.

If you don't care much about the quality of service at hotels, then the hotel is actually quite nice. It's located in a great location. A square is directly in front of the hotel and there are multiple places one can walk around. The amenities offered in the hotel are great and made the stay enjoyable from this perspective; we took advantage of the pool, casino and spa. The rooms were comfortable and the bathrooms were very large. (Loved the bed, as always.) The only thing I found odd and inconvenient was the closet is located in the bathroom. Not the most convenient location but it was fine.

To provide some color on the disappointing customer service:
- I had called for an ethernet cord at 6pm and was told they would be bringing it up. I waited until ~7pm before falling asleep. Upon waking at ~8:30 pm, it still had not arrived. Since I was leaving the next day and was off to dinner, I didn't bother with calling down again for the cord.

- We tried to eat lunch at the hotel and was told Bistro M was closed until 1 pm. We tried the patio venue across the lobby from Bistro M but could not find one single person to assist us. None of the tables were set but we were told that it was open. We waited for 5-10 minutes and then moved the party to the restaurant by the pool. Perhaps we should have been more aggressive in our pursuit of getting service at Bistro M ... after eating the food by the pool, I would recommend demanding service at Bistro M - the food is much better.

- We tried to contact the concierge via phone multiple times before our arrival to discuss reserving a car and visiting some wineries. Since we were hiking in Patagonia, we only had the ability to contact the concierge in the early evening (~6pm). We left a couple of messages but never received a return call. Once we arrived, it appeared more time was spent with other guests; whereas upon our turn, a car reservation was made and a quick "just tell the driver where you want to go" response was given. The concierge appeared to not want to spend time with us and was in a hurry to assist the couple behind us. Definitely one of the worst concierge services I have received from a luxury hotel.

- On our way to the airport, we had requested the concierge to call for 3 cars to arrive at 1:30 pm. At 1:30 pm 3 cars were available but they only allowed us to get into 2 of the cars; the third car was apparently waiting for a couple who was sitting out on the patio. Despite us being ready, the hotel said they were calling for another car and that we needed to wait for its arrival. Around 1:45 pm, the couple finally got into the car and left. About 2 pm, our 3rd car finally arrived. Not certain if they called in the wrong number, gave away our car or the car service didn't have another car available at that time ... regardless, no one at the hotel apologized or tried to explain what had happened.

Unfortunately there are a few more stories from other members of my party but as I can't recall their entire story, I have not added those examples.

Overall, a disappointing stay. It would be great if another luxury hotel would open and compete against Park Hyatt. Perhaps this would finally push Park Hyatt to improve its service. I personally would not stay at the Park Hyatt again but as stated before, if you want a great location, comfortable bed and access to a pool, spa and casino, this is your best bet and thus worth the stay.

The Park Hyatt is the only act in town – but, boy, don’t they know it! This was our second stay, a little more than a year on from the first, and I was disappointed to note that all of the deficiencies I highlighted in my guest feedback questionnaire in early 2006 continued to hold true. Specifically:

- The service standards in the hotel’s main restaurant are extremely variable and, at times, shambolic. On both of our stays we noted guests waiting for a table at breakfast while two thirds of the restaurant was empty, awaiting the cleaning of used tables.

- The standard of room service is highly variable. In 2006 we were compelled to return blood-stained towels. This time it was blood-stained sheets!

- The hotel appears to pay no attention to the Hyatt’s own guest loyalty programme. If you go to the trouble of quoting your Hyatt Gold number at both reservation and check-in, one might reasonably expect the hotel to ask (for example) whether you want a paper to read in the morning.

Turning to matters that it will be less easy for management to correct, the design of the premium rooms – whilst very “cool” – is bizarrely impractical. The sliding doors in the bathroom are cumbersome and noisy (as is the hotel in general). And whoever thought of putting all the closets in the bathroom, while dispensing with a toilet door?! (With reference to my above comment, maybe the laundry is designed the same way!) Specify a room without an inter-connecting door unless you want to share every experience with the guest next door.

The above said, the hotel is beautiful to look at, and many of the staff are excellent and friendly. With a bit more competition, I suspect it would be first-rate. As it is, it is not – but then where else will you stay if you want to stay in the city?
