This was the highlight of our time in Mendoza as far as food was concerned. Food: Great! Atmosphere: Incredible!

“Fantastic Extravaganza!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2012

I had the best meal of my life here - the first course was an absolutely incredible experience and at about US$30, with unlimited good-quality wine with the meal, the price is great.

Tips ask for your own private dining area in the cave. To save money, the bus takes you nearby and is about 30-40 mins from the center of town.

“Just too much!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2012

We went to this restaurant on recommendation of our tour guide after a morning wine tour, since we were looking for a place to have a light al fresco lunch. The previous reviews have set it all out, so I won't repeat, suffice to say that it was ridiculously over the top. We cold not even get through a third of the starter and had to leave straight after that. We were not informed that it was a fixed menu, nor of the quantities or the cost. It was definitely not al fresco dining as we were closed in an old stuffy dust and dark room. So, when we said we really could not eat any more, we still were faced with this huge bill of 360 pesos! Needless to say, we were greatly disappointed.

“First course is ridiculous.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2012

We visited Cava de Cano based on all the great Trip Advisor reviews. We thought it was a great, unique place and makes a good story when telling people about your trip. Update- the price is now about $35 USD per person, and the restaurant is located in Lujan de Cuyo so its about a $12 cab ride each way (if you're staying in downtown Mendoza), so factor that in to the cost.
The first course is definitely crazy enough to leave an impression- you can view photos of it in other reviews. It was just me and my husband and the entire table is filled with meats, cheeses, beans, veggies, dried fruits, breads, etc. The first course is definitely enough to fill you up by itself. They leave it all on the table for you so you can continue to munch throughout the meal. Second course is an empanada, third was a bowl of soup, fourth was some pasta, fifth was a stew, sixth was ice cream. And throughout all this, as much wine as you can drink. At the end, they give you champagne and cigars.
They put us in our own private room and didn't rush us at all. A little pricey, but we thought it was worth it just for all the wine and first course!
Tips:
Go hungry!
You need to make a reservation (can do online) so they know to expect you, even if its not busy.
Don't eat the black blood sausage if you're American... yuck!
Ask for a tour- we didn't and wished we had.
Go with more people so you can share the cost of the cab.
Get your money's worth on the wine!
They didn't charge a table service fee like most restaurants in Argentina, so make sure you tip appropriately. (The tipping standard there was never really clear to us... but if the service fee was 10%, we tipped an additional 8-10%, and if no service fee, then we tipped 18-20%.)
It would be worth looking into doing the winery bike tour that goes to Lujan and then just staying there to go to dinner, but that might be too early for dinner.
There is also a a great strip of restaurants and bars (fun scene) on Aristides Villanueva. Also by Plaza Independencia, but that dies down much earlier than on Aristides.
