“Overrated tea, excellent breakfast.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

We stayed at the Alvear, and the tea was by far the most oversold and underwhelming experience. If you've had proper tea in London or The Imperial in Delhi, this is downright shoddy. The cups were chipped, the servers kept banging things against our glassware and the desserts looked average at best. Good people watching though, it was full of BA's ladies who lunch. The teas themselves were fine, as were the finger sandwiches, but nothing to rave about.

I don't know if non-guests can have breakfast, but if so, then the breakfast buffet L'Orangerie is MUCH better. The tea service does not do justice to the physical space of the L'Orangerie. Or, trade up and go to Bourgogne at the Alvear. The tea experience is not worth the time or money, and if you've had authentic tea at similar places elsewhere, this is totally meh.

“Enjoyed the afternoon tea very much”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

Bring a high tea hat. This almost too British afternoon tea experience in Buenos Aires is loads of fun. Held in the L'Orangerie room at the Alvear. Reservations needed in advance. Servers are a bit pretentious but a fake British accent puts them in place. Grand selection of teas; I chose a white tea. Crumpets are great. No clotted cream, so any hopes for a cream tea are dashed. Sandwiches were surprisingly delightful, particularly the cucumber. A heapful of little desserts and fun pastries, and they give you a dessert for the road. Overall a pleasant experience. A cream tea would have made it near perfect.

“A thoroughly enjoyable experience at the best value high tea anywhere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

I can't believe it's taken me eight months to remember to write this review, as tea at L'Orangerie was a highlight of our March 2012 trip to Buenos Aires and Argentina. The Alvear is picture perfect and the tea experience at L'Orangerie demonstrates the polish of the place, though it avoids the pretensiousness and/or stuffiness that often accompanies high teas at luxury hotels in North America and Europe. The room was lovely, if a little too loud - the spot is understandably popular with large groups, meeting for ladies get-togethers, showers or engagement parties. Our server was extremely slick and professional, but also warmly friendly. Petit fours were dainty, plentiful and tasty; as mentioned by others, split one tea service between two people for the food and simply order a second pot of tea. Even with the split tea, the dessert cart was overwhelming - the choice is staggering and we were already fairly full! The delicious chocolate truffles that came with the extremely reasonable bill were a lovely finishing touch. At about 60 USD, this was the real bargain everybody had been telling us to come to Argentina to find. (We didn't find it many other places...) Highly recommended.

“High Tea at the Alvear was a highlight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

We had the high tea here and loved it. The hotel is spectacular, everything looks so polished and luxurious. The waiters were extremely good and very helpful when we were about to order way too much food by mistake - One high tea is more than enough to share between two people, you just need to order a second glass of champagne.

We had delicate scones, with a beautiful bitter marmalade; lots of savouries and sandwiches, some pretty pastries and a dessert.
We had a the Alvear blend tea, which is black tea with almonds and a hint of fruit. It's a very delicate, subtle tea.

In all this was one of the best high teas we've ever had, and the hotel is stunning.
