My wife and I have been here for about 4 days now. The rooms and common areas are beautifully designed and very clean. The staff are very pleasant, speak excellent English and are generally very helpful. However, a 5-star hotel this is definitely not, contrary to many reviews we've read here and on other sites.
The location of this hotel is far from ideal. There seem to be two San Telmos -- one ramshackle but charming, the other ramshackle and squalid. This hotel definitely falls in the latter section. There's tons of graffiti, garbage, and dog droppings strewn all over the streets here, and very little street life. Walking at night around the hotel isn't necessarily unsafe, but certainly isn't pleasant. You'll need to walk at least 5 blocks through some dirty and ugly streets to find any desirable restaurants or cafes.
The hotel is undergoing some construction and thus has no bar, restaurant or room service, contrary to what they and other travel sites have advertised. Additionally, the roof deck was closed at 10:00 and the jacuzzi was not functioning during our stay. Concierge services were inaccessible on a couple of occasions. Light sleepers might have a hard time here, as there's a good amount of noise coming from the street.
In many ways, the hotel feels like the old Overlook Hotel from The Shining, in the sense that there's very little life and a dearth of services. All that said though, the rooms are fantastic -- very large and very tastefully furnished. I can't remember staying in a nicer hotel room anywhere.
Stay here for the 5-star rooms, but don't expect 5-star services. And be sure to get in a cab as soon as the door closes behind you.
