Hotel Costa Rica is a wonderful boutique hotel.

PROS:
-- Walking distance to the best area in BA (Palermo Viejo -- it's in Palermo, but a few blocks from the "center" of it)
-- After considerable research, nicest hotel for the price (very reasonable price) in the neighborhood we wanted to stay in**
-- Exceptionally friendly staff and owner!!
-- Given great recommendations for places to eat, drink, and sightsee (I will remember that amazing pepper steak at Lo de Jesus for a long time)
-- Cool architecture and interior design, hip and modern yet very warm
-- Terrace and bar
-- Air conditioner (needed for the summer humidity)
-- Comfortable bed
-- It's what I would expect and hope for in a good boutique hotel (definitely great for people who want something considerably nicer than a hostel, value location, cannot afford a five star hotel, and understand how boutique hotels may potentially differ from more standard hotels, including chains)

I think it's always important to give a balanced review, so here are the cons, but honestly, they felt minor to me/us:
-- Cash only (but this is something common in Argentina in general and not unique to the hotel)
-- We had a standard room with a European shower -- it took us a little getting used to, but not a big deal (I loved the water pressure in the shower though)
-- Because one of our windows went into the hallway, sometimes you could hear others talking (but mostly the hotel was pretty quiet)
-- Pool would have been nice

My boyfriend and I mentioned that we were going out to dinner later for my birthday in passing . . . and an hour later, there was a knock at our door . . . a bottle of champagne! It really made us feel special.

We really appreciated Hotel Costa Rica and its staff for being such a great part of a very special trip.

Stayed at this place for a few days around new year 2007. It's in a pretty cool location for Palermo and walking distance to the attractions in the area.

But I could only recommend this place as a back-up. For what you get the price is only so-so. I was traveling with a friend and we found that the room was pretty small. This my not be the case for a couple, but for two adult men the hotel was very small.

Also, while the Argentine staff was helpful, the owner was a bit annoying and gave me sort of a hardtime time regarding the price of the rooms the hotel had garunteed by email. When it came time to pay he told me what a great deal I had got and how prices had increased since then.

Overall, I didn't get a good feeling from the ownership. That said, the place is decent and is stylish and relaxing. It's not a terrible hotel, but I think they could work more on customer service from the managment.

In sum, I think there are better choices in the area.

I got into BA and to the hotel at 11pm on New Year's Eve. Next thing I know, I have a bottle of wine in my hand. What could possibly go wrong? Great staff, friendly guests, awesome area. Highly recommended.

During our trip to Argentina we came a couple of times back to Buenos Aires and we stayed in Costa Rica 3 times (6 nights in total). We stayed at several other hotels in BA as well, but the value for money ratio of Costa Rica can't be beaten! It's a nice and trendy place without becoming 'too cool'. Staff is very friendly and giving the place a nice personal touch. Emiel and Karin from Amsterdam

After reading the glowing reviews of Hotel Costa Rica, I expected something better. Our room (Junior, $70/day) contained a king-size bed, 3 nested end tables (no drawers or shelves), a suitcase stand, a wastebasket, and a small curtained alcove with a 3-foot clothespole. Period. There was a 2-foot clearance from bed to wall on the right, 3 feet at the bottom, and four feet on the left. What the room did NOT have were: TV, dresser, shelves (no place to unpack our suitcases onto), carpet (bare cement floors), mini-bar, telephone, hair dryer, Kleenex dispenser, shower curtain, bathmat, sill around shower (the water just flooded across the bathroom floor), facecloths, bathroom exhaust fan, drinking glasses, towel racks (two metal pegs were provided for our 4 towels). The bathroom door was of cloudy glass, and missed the bottom of the doorway by 3 inches and the top by a foot, so did little to keep light, sounds, odors, or stream from coming into the bedroom.
The staff were uniformly friendly and helpful. After 3 days we were able to transfer to a Superior room ($95) which was a good bit larger, had marble tile floors instead of cement, a chair, and a large armoire with 4 shelves and a large drawer. However no closet, so our hanging clothes had to be laid on shelves. And as with the first room, there were large unpainted areas on the wall, presumably resulting from plumbing changes
All in all, I wouldn't stay there again. We tried to locate another hotel in the under-$100 price range, but with high season coming on, that wasn't possible.
If anyone plans a stay there, I'd be happy to share info on local restaurants.
