This was not necessarily my first choice, but I was put off by the large cash deposit required by apartments and could not find many hotels equipped to handle a triple in my price range. But, I have found the Best Western chain reliable outside the US, and have low end status in their frequent traveler program so went for it.
Our suite on the 7th floor was clean and recently remodeled with tile floors and luxurious bathroom. The bed was comfortable but the sofabed lacked support (my son only weighs 120#) and the furniture was of the cheap home assembly variety. The WiFi worked; although the signal was not that strong, it never dropped and was always there when we needed it. The neighborhood is working class, but safe. Honestly, you can walk 20 blocks in any direction and the streets are dirty and the sidewalks torn up. It ain't Palermo.
What sets this property apart from others in the staff, including the American owner, who went out of their way to make us comfortable and welcome. We requested and received early check-in at 10:00 AM (you need this since many flights from the US are red-eyes). The owner also comped us a half day at the end of our stay since our flight didn't leave until 8:30 PM (probably not possible in season). And he gave us a gift as well upon our departure. There was always an English speaking clerk at the front desk, although the housekeepers don't speak it. And if you need help, the lady who runs breakfast most days is fluent in 6 languages. I found Hernan most helpful in selecting a church to attend on Sunday and a Tango show that was a little less "Las Vegas" and a little more "Buenos Aires". There was a night clerk who spent quite a while helping me understand local politics and I never lacked for help with doors, luggage, cabs or directions.
BTW, there's a great little Italian restaurant a block down Junin called "Prosciutto".
Issues others experienced? 1. Portenos don't eat much for breakfast - cafe & a couple medialunas is std. If you need eggs and OJ, order it and pay - it's very inexpensive. 2. Don't fret the view - what are you doing in your hotel room with your eyes open anyway? 3. Don't like the neighborhood? It's BsAs, get used to it. The Subte is 3 blocks away and costs US$0.30 to ride. 4. Unfriendly staff? Look inside yourself, my friend? 5. Weak WiFi? There's 2 lucotorios on every block. Leave your laptop at home.
This is definitely a place I would return to on my next visit, and the owner and his staff are the reason.
