Palermo Viejo B&B was a great last minute find. We can certainly see why many guests make return visits to this peaceful retreat in Palermo. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Overall, the biggest draw of this B&B is the top-notch service. Even prior to our arrival, we experienced the special brand of Palermo Viejo B&B service. The owner, Ariel responded promptly to e-mail inquiries and called us to confirm arrangements. He even offered his staff's assistance with booking ferry rides to and from Uruguay, which was very helpful when we arrived. A staff member (Nicolas) fulfilled this promise in the friendliest way--even printing our e-tickets & calling a taxi to take us to the Buquebus (ferry) terminal.
Even though we had only booked for 3 nights and had separated those nights with a side trip to Colonia & Montevideo, Ariel and his staff treated us as though we were long-term guests. We were allowed to leave our luggage for several nights and upon our return happily found our suitcases in our new room.
We had the pleasure of staying in two different rooms (amarilla/yellow and naranja/orange). That the rooms are colour-themed might worry the decor fiends, but fear not: the rooms are tastefully decorated in accordance with an assigned colour. Each room features a piece of original art, which can even be purchased by eager guests.
Both rooms were not huge but still felt spacious with high ceilings, nice windows onto the courtyard and well-arranged furniture.
Each room was equipped with a small safe for personal effects, which was a great touch for giving guests a feeling of security.
Fresh towels were provided for each guest. Also, toiletries (natural loofah, pumice stone, shampoo & soap) were provided in individual mesh bags. The only thing that was missing in the bathroom was a hairdryer so ladies & gents who can't live with air-dried hair, take note!
Other reviewers are right about sound travel. While we did not find it particularly noisy (perhaps due to other guests making efforts to stay quiet), we could hear activity in other rooms and in the common courtyards. Still, there was virtually no noise from the street, especially in the inner rooms toward the back of the house, which is remarkable in bustling Buenos Aires.
A warning to those allergic or sensitive to cigarette smoke: guests are allowed to smoke in the courtyards/patios. All room doors and windows open onto these courtyard areas so smoke easily wafts in even with windows closed.
Out of the two rooms we stayed in, we preferred the orange one and wanted to take the mattress home with us! The bed was unbelievably comfortable, making getting up for the included breakfast no easy feat!
Breakfast was adequate and good but not too exciting. Toast (& toppings), medialunas, fruit, yogurt, fresh-squeezed orange juice, coffee & tea available. I would have preferred guest-access to the toaster instead of pre-toasted (and quickly softening) bread in a basket but I can appreciate the reasons for staff preparation of the toast. In any event, we mostly avoided the toast as we preferred the sweet, fresh medialunas anyway!
We weren't a fan of the coffee served out of a plastic thermos either but this was not tragic since there are countless cafes nearby and across the city with excellent coffee.
Indeed, the B&B is located in a hip part of Palermo, steps from the a number of recommendable restaurants, cafes and bars. Ariel is quick to provide top-notch dining recommendations that should be followed with great success!
Chatting with Ariel and observing all the details of his work it becomes apparent that this is a true labour of love. Ariel is personally invested in his guests' stays, which could be unnerving for those looking for an anonymous hotel-type experience. Ariel is an owner who really cares what you think about his B&B and the service he provides.
So if you do not want the intimacy of feeling like you are staying in a local's personal project, avoid this charming little B&B. If you want exceptional, tailored service in a warm and comfortable atmosphere, look no further and reserve a room at Palermo Viejo B&B.
